Scope:
 Minimize the fire risk in machinery spaces through the identification
of potential sources of ignition (even the smallest)
Assessment based on:
 Mapping and verification of pipelines and associated fittings of the
fuel oil, marine diesel oil, marine gas oil, lube oil and hydraulic oil
systems
 Identification, through thermograph measurements, of hot-spots,
i.e. areas that due to their high temperature may represent a risk of
fire ignition

A procedure for the approval of the product design, including drawing
appraisal and prototype test performance.
Type approval is compulsory for certain products and scopes:
 Classification purposes (e.g. diesel engines, electric cables and electric motors)
 Flag Administration requirements (e.g. marine products)
 European Directive (e.g. MED, Pleasure Craft Directive)
Type approval can also be requested on a voluntary basis by the
manufacturer.
RINA owns a Testing Laboratory providing services according to the national
and international applicable standards for fire protection material and
equipment.
Type approval and MED
A means to certify the reliability of a manufacturer to produce materials in
accordance with the classification requirements.
It is carried out in accordance with the RINA "Rules for the approval of
manufacturers of materials” and it is a preliminary step for relevant product
certification.

 manufacturers of steel
 aluminum and copper alloy castings
 forgings and rolled products
as required by the classification requirements and or by the customer.

are mandatorily requested by class rules or international regulations.
The services for which a firm is subject to approval by the class societies
are, for instance:

RINA SERVICES is recognized as CAP provider by the most important oil
majors.
The main benefits of having a CAP are:
 Documentary evidence for third parties involved in the operation of the
vessel

RINA CAP specific criteria are developed also for specialized ship types, such as
LNG carriers and cable laying ships.

RINA SERVICES is recognized as CAP provider by the ship vetting company
RIGHTSHIP as an efficient tool to assess the adequacy of older ships.

We use modern software tools for the technical assessment, as well as for the
preparation of the report, to ensure uniformity of analysis, judgement and
reporting.
Condition Assessment
Programme (CAP) for bulk carriers
Anchoring and mooring analyses of ships or floating units
A wide range of studies aiming at assessing the behaviour of two or more units
connected side-by-side (mooring), or one unit connected to the sea bed
(anchoring), or any combination of the two.
Typical fields of application:
 offshore floating units for oil & gas activities (FSO’s, FPSO’s, FSRU’s)
 units involved in transhipping operations (bulk, containers, etc.)
 Floating Liquefaction Natural Gas (FLNG)
Recently, RINA SERVICES has widely applied these techniques for the
classification of the first Floating Storage Regasification Unit
(FSRU Toscana), located offshore Livorno – Italy, in open sea conditions.
Stability & hydrodynamics:
anchoring and mooring analysis
Piracy is a growing threat affecting the free and safe shipping activity,
spreading in particular geographical areas such as Aden Gulf, Malacca Strait,
Niger Delta, Caribbean Sea.
The ship should appear as a difficult target managed by personnel properly
aware of the threat and trained for.
Measures proven to be effective in this respect are:

emissions (SOX, NOX and CO2)

 Ships reaching a high ESI rewarded on the basis of the policy adopted by each
single port of call (i.e. reducing the standard harbor fees).
