appraisal and prototype test performance.
Type approval is compulsory for certain products and scopes:
Classification purposes (e.g. diesel engines, electric cables and electric motors)
Flag Administration requirements (e.g. marine products)
European Directive (e.g. MED, Pleasure Craft Directive)
Type approval can also be requested on a voluntary basis by the
manufacturer.
RINA owns a Testing Laboratory providing services according to the national
and international applicable standards for fire protection material and
equipment.

It is carried out in accordance with the RINA "Rules for the approval of
manufacturers of materials” and it is a preliminary step for relevant product

69. Anchoring and mooring analyses of ships or floating units
A wide range of studies aiming at assessing the behaviour of two or more units
connected side-by-side (mooring), or one unit connected to the sea bed
(anchoring), or any combination of the two.
Typical fields of application:
offshore floating units for oil & gas activities (FSO’s, FPSO’s, FSRU’s)
units involved in transhipping operations (bulk, containers, etc.)
Floating Liquefaction Natural Gas (FLNG)
Recently, RINA SERVICES has widely applied these techniques for the
classification of the first Floating Storage Regasification Unit
(FSRU Toscana), located offshore Livorno – Italy, in open sea conditions.

70. Piracy is a growing threat affecting the free and safe shipping activity,
spreading in particular geographical areas such as Aden Gulf, Malacca Strait,
Niger Delta, Caribbean Sea.
The ship should appear as a difficult target managed by personnel properly

A voluntary performance indicator of the ship capacity to reduce air
emissions (SOX, NOX and CO2)

Novel technologies are not adequately covered by established codes,

Technology Qualification certifies that a novel technology meets the
specified requirements for its intended service in terms of safety, fitness for
