GEARBOXES FOR TORPEDO LADDLE CAR
Hot metal pretreatment is an indispensable process in advanced steel plants in
which the blast furnace (BF)–basic oxygen furnace (BOF) route has been applied
for iron refining since 1980s. Its main objective involves adjusting and controlling
hot metal composition by removing undesired elements such as silicon, sulphur,
and phosphorus. The associated processes include desiliconisation,
desulphurisation, and dephosphorisation, and they involve the use of effective
agents (e.g. O2, FexO, and CaC2) with injection technology or mechanical stirring
[5–7]. Metallurgical units and vessels, such as pig iron runner, torpedo laddle car,
transfer ladle, and BOF, are used for pretreatment processes, and the combined
employments of vessels differ across various steel plants.
In the course of industrial production, dangerous and critical production facilities
and machinery are used. Lined equipment, including torpedo ladle cars, hot-metal
cars and steel ladles, is considered to be critical equipment at heavy industry and
machinery building facilities.
Liquid iron is transported in torpedoes on railways or roadways at a steelworks
from one work station to another. Torpedo ladle cars are used to transfer molten
iron from the iron-making section of the plant to the steel-making section. Under
normal conditions, the residence time of the molten iron in the ladle is two to
four hours, and the distance traveled is usually less than one-half mile. In addition
to transporting molten iron, the torpedo ladle can also be used as a refining
vessel. For example, during desulfurization, powdered reagents are injected into
the molten iron by means of a lance. The reagents react with the sulfur in the
molten iron and separate from the iron in the form of slag. This process is
detrimental to the refractory lining due to the turbulence created.
The torpedo ladle commonly has a cylindrical shape with conical ends and are
filled or emptied through an oval shaped opening in its top. The torpedo ladle cars
are designed for the least amount of heat loss.
The Torpedo is rotated with the help of gearboxes.
ABOUT GEARBOXES:
The Gearbox used for rotation of TLC is combination of inline planetary and
parallel shaft helical gearbox. The mounting bracket is provided with these
gearboxes for mounting of Motor and brake. This drive has creep arrangement to
meet its Precise Positioning at Micro Speed.
In normal mode the drive is given by main motor to input of planetary and then to
output shaft. Whereas in creep model the drive is given by the creep motor to
input of helical gearbox and then to planetary gearbox. There is also a manual
arrangement provided with the help of crank wheel attached at rear to operate in
case of power cut.
