I am currently engaged in the active search for employment as a Registered Nurse and it is
important to always be looking forward toward the future. To that end, I propose the following
professional goals to work towards.
Goals to obtain within
o 1 year
Gain a position as a Medical-Surgical Nurse
Successfully complete orientation to the Med-Surge floor within
organization time limits (2 – 3 months)
Join a state Nurses Association
o 5 years
Become actively involved in the Legislative process for the advocacy of
Nurses
Obtain a position as a High Acuity Nurse in an ER, NICU or ICU setting
Apply to a CNM program
o 10 years
Work as a CNM for several years
Apply for DNP
o 20 years
Obtain DNP
Work in Research or Education in Nursing
What I need to do to accomplish my goals
o 1 year
Apply, interview and obtain a position as a Med-Surge Nurse
Remain dedicated to high standards of learning and evidence based
practice
Apply to an organization
o 5 – 20 years
Stay actively involved in current events, reach out to legislators regarding
current regulations and practices governing the nursing practice
Apply to be a float nurse or apply directly to a high acuity setting
Follow the application process for the CNM program & DNP program
What could prevent me from obtaining my goals
Not applying, poor interview
Becoming complacent, not focusing on current politics and policies
Changing interests that would lead me to apply to a research position
sooner
How I will reward myself for my accomplishments
