Wilkes County offers a unique mix
of natural beauty and abun-
dant opportunities. While the area’s
natural charm attracts those who seek
to experience first-hand what Southern
hospitality is all about, Wilkes is widely
viewed as an ideal place to begin a new
business, for established businesses to
relocate, and all businesses to grow.
The community thrives due to the
cooperation of local government, the
dedication of individual citizens, and
the input of industries. An ever expand-
ing labor force and a multitude of
skilled workers fill the area, and the
educational advantage of our Wilkes
Community College are beneficial to
any growing business.
This region of the state is fondly referred
to as a recreational “paradise.” Visitors
enjoy spectacular views of the Blue
Ridge Mountains and are invited to
participate in a wide range of sporting
and leisure activities. Residents feel

Wilkes County
A Strong Heritage
History echoes through the mountains of
Wilkes County. The County was created
in 1777 and was named in honor of John
Wilkes, who was a member of the British
Parliament and at one time Lord Mayor
of London. Lord Wilkes praised American
colonies for maintaining their rights dur-
ing the struggle for independence from
Great Britain. The first man to settle in
Wilkes was Christopher Gist, who settled
in the Yadkin Valley area of the county
in 1750. Wilkes was home to Daniel
Boone and his family for many years,
leaving here to make their famous trips to
Kentucky. Colonel Benjamin Cleveland
and other Revolutionary War heroes was
home in Wilkes and it was these “moun-
tain men” who arrived at the Battle of
Kings Mountain and in doing so, turned
the tide of the Revolutionary War.
The Town of Wilkesboro, formerly
founded as Wilkesborough, was built in
the lower tract of land acquired by the
Moravians. At that time, this land was
part of Anson County and the lower tract
of 4,933 acres was between the mouth of
Cub Creek and continued up the Yadkin
River to Brown’s Ford, located just below
W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir. The
name “Mulberry Fields” was used when
referring to the area which included
today’s two towns, Wilkesboro and North
Wilkesboro. The Town of Wilkesboro was
founded in 1847 and incorporated in
1889. Wilkesboro is the county seat for
Wilkes County.
The Town of North Wilkesboro was
established with the railroad. The railroad
lines were built on the north side of
the Yadkin River and did not cross into
Wilkesboro due to flooding on the river
and limited funds. Land was purchased
on the north bank of the Yadkin River, op-
posite to the county seat of Wilkesboro in
1890 by Winston Land and Improvement
Company. The Town of North Wilkesboro
was incorporated on March 4, 1891.
The Town of Ronda located in eastern
Wilkes County, was incorporated on
February 15, 1907. The first land grant
was deeded to Benjamin Cleveland,
and records show that it was recorded
in 1779. This property was located west
of Ronda on a large bend on the Yadkin

River is still known as the Roundabout
Farm. “Roundabout” shortened to
“Ronda” is believed to be where Ronda
got its name. In the 1920s Ronda was
a very productive and busy town, and
during the time of the Great Depression
Ronda as well as the County suffered
greatly. Ronda has fertile land for
farming and vineyards. The beauti-
ful landscape featuring green pastures,
rolling hills and flowing streams, is
surrounded by magnificent scenic views
of the mountains. Today Ronda, with
water and sewer in place, is growing at
a steady pace and has the potential for
greater development.
Wilkes is known for its entrepreneurial
spirit. Lowe’s Companies, Inc., currently
the second-largest home improvement
retailer in the United States, holds about
six percent of the $140 billion home
improvement market. Lowes began in
the Town of North Wilkesboro in 1921
when L.S. Lowe opened a hardware
store. Following his death, the business
was taken over by his son James and
daughter’s husband, Carl Buchan. In
1946 Buchan took a 50 percent interest
in the store, reorganized and became a
wholesale-style seller of hardware and
building supplies. In 1952 Buchan took
full controlling interest and incorporated
as Lowe’s North Wilkesboro Hardware,
Inc. Tyson Foods, Inc., formerly known
in Wilkesboro as the Holly Farms Poultry
Company, was founded in 1958 by the
Lovette family. The company and its
operations were purchased by Tyson
Foods in 1989. Tyson, Inc. is the world’s
second largest processor and marketer of
chicken, beef and pork. Wilkes is home
to multiple successful industries that
began with an entrepreneurial vision and
started with lots of hard work.
Wilkes is home to a number of historical
places to visit. One of the best known is
Rendezvous Mountain. According to tra-
dition, this was where “Old Roundabout”
stood when he blew his hunting horn to
rally patriotic followers during the Revolu-
tionary War. Other historic spots include
the Wilkes Heritage Museum which
previously served as the county court-
house, the Old Wilkes Jail where Tom
Dula (Dooley) was jailed for murdering
Laura Foster, Captain Robert Cleveland’s
log home built in the 1780s, and St. Paul’s
Episcopal Church built in the 1800s and
home of Benjamin F. Long’s Frescoes.

Wilkes County history has been preserved
in a series of DVD documentaries. Copies
of the DVDs are available in the Wilkes
County Public Library, Wilkes Heritage
Museum, and Wilkes Community College
Library. Much of the video footage is
available for viewing on YouTube.com.

Location
Wilkes County covers approximately 760 square
miles of terrain that is anchored by the eastern part
of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Kerr Scott Lake, Yadkin
River, Stone Mountain State Park, several other
streams and the Brushy Mountain range. Deeper than
the landscape of rugged mountains and picturesque
waterways are the distinctive small towns and com-
munities within Wilkes County. Wilkes County is
centrally located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge
Mountains and is 45 minutes from Winston-Salem,
Hickory, and Boone. Wilkes is an ideal place to
escape from the fast pace of city living and yet close
enough to travel to larger metropolitan areas.
