The commune of Luncavita,in Tulcea,is the only one in Romania
mentioned twice in the Calendar of Romanian Village Feasts,a document
through which central authorities officially recognise,at a gouvernment,
level,25 feasts in Romanian villages to be promoted in the country and
abroad.
The two big events which take place annualy in Luncavita are “Mosoaie
Feast”in December and “Linden Feast” in June.
Of the eve of St. Nicholas, the streets of the Luncavita and Rachelu villages
start to crowd with “mosoi” and “mosoicute” ,the names for “mos” men and
women participants. The men have large bells, face masks, stag or ram
horns, fox skins and large woolen coats. The women wear small bells, face
masks from rabbit skin, deer horn and short coats. Each evening, until
late, their bells can be heard.During this time, groups are formed and people
repeat their songs at each home in the village.
For the community of Luncavita, these partnership and new title
encourage local traditional activities, which bring benefits and sources of
revenue for locals.
