2. Introduction
1. There are at least four important
ministries of the Holy Spirit to the believer
at the time of conversion.
2. These ministries are simultaneous and
coincident and occur in the heart of the
believer at the moment of conversion.
3. The Four (4) Ministries of the
Holy Spirit at Conversion:
1. Regeneration
2. Baptism
3. Indwelling
4. Sealing
4. (1) Regeneration
Definition: Regeneration is the act of God
whereby eternal life is imparted to the
believer by the Holy Spirit.
Relevant Passages:
Titus 3:5; John 3:3-8; Ephesians 2:5
Regeneration happens through the
hearing and believing of the word (Romans
10:17; James 1:21)
5.
6. Regeneration is Instantaneous
Though there may be many factors and
circumstances leading up to conversion,
regeneration itself is an instantaneous
event.
Note John 1:13; 3:3,5,7—In these
passages the aorist tense (which
expresses an event rather than a process)
is used in reference to regeneration.
7. (2) Baptism
Definition: The baptism of the Holy Spirit is
the act whereby the Holy Spirit makes the
believer an integral part of the Body of
Christ.
By the baptism of the Holy Spirit the
believer’s life is united with the very life of
Christ.
Before salvation, a person is in Adam. At
conversion, the believer is removed from
his position in Adam and placed in Christ.
8. Important Scripture passages denoting
baptism by the Holy Spirit into the body of
Christ:
Romans 6:3-5
1 Corinthians 12:12-13
Galatians 3:26-27
Colossians 2:12
9. Water Baptism Visualizes Baptism of
the Holy Spirit
Water baptism is the outward symbol of
the believer’s being baptized into the Body
of Christ (cf. Romans 6:3-5)
Water baptism becomes an outward
tangible picture of a believer’s being
plunged into or incorporated into union with
Christ.
10. (3) Indwelling of the Holy Spirit
Definition: The indwelling of the Holy Spirit
refers to the presence of the Holy Spirit in
the life of the believer from the moment of
conversion on.
Romans 5:5; Romans 8:9,11 (note the
permanency of the Holy Spirit)
The Corinthians had to be reminded of this
fact (1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 6:19)
11. (4) Sealing
Definition: The act whereby the Holy Spirit
impresses upon the believer God’s stamp
of ownership and the believer’s security
Ownership (Romans 8:9,16; 2 Timothy
2:19)
Security (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30)
13. Spirit of the Living God
Spirit of the living God,
Fall fresh on me;
Spirit of the living God,
Fall fresh on me;
Break me, melt me, mold me, fill me.
Spirit of the living God,
Fall fresh on me.
