27. Q&A
Q: Overall are you gaining or losing
money?
A: All internships are full time and your living costs
(including rent) will be covered. In terms of making a
profit, it's very difficult to predict. There are a lot of
variables, including the cost of flights, length of
internship, and the amount of travel the student
does. We recommend saving some money for
departure so you don't have to miss out on any
awesome experiences
28. Q&A
Q: Can it be used for course credits?
A: Yes. This applies to courses ENGN3100(0 credits,
compulsory) and COMP4800(0 credits, compulsory).
For ENGN3200(6-24 units) and COMP3820(24 units),
you will have to contact the course convener for
further clarification (e.g. eligibility of the chosen
company etc). If you are in other colleges, please
seek further information from the specific college.
29. Q&A
Q: Can you apply in your final year and go to
the internship even though you are graduated?
A:Depends on the internship. Some employers
require you to be studying while you undertake the
internship, but there are still many many
opportunities for recent grads!
30. Q&A
Q: (following from previous question) I am an international
student, after I graduate my visa in Australia might be expired or
I will be outside Australia. What happens then? Do I have to be
departing from Australia for my traineeship?
A: Since this can only be answered on a case by case
basis, please send any specific questions to
outgoing@iaeste.org.au
31. Q&A
Q: What should be emphasised on the
resume?
A: We prioritise students who are 1) motivated, and 2) good
communicators. Students should emphasise their involvement
in clubs, volunteering, paid jobs, hobbies and other projects so
we can see that they are not just interested in finishing their
degree, but are also keen to take on new experiences.
Communication skills are shown in the letter of motivation
and throughout the application. We DO NOT prioritise GPA,
however a 65 average is preferred.
32. Q&A
Q: How competitive is it? How many
offers do we get in Canberra?
A: Last year we had 15 offers and 35 applicants, but
we are expecting a much higher number of
applicants this year (probably around 75). With
applicants from Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane and
Perth, the offers are nationwide, so there aren't any
allocated to specific cities. The offers just go to the
best applicants, regardless of where they are from!
