Editor's Notes
Many populations of students were found to be receiving sub par educations and LBJ set out to change this. He helped establish the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in 1965. Since then the plan has been revised about every 2-8 years to ensure students received the best education.
The 1994 revision of ESEA was known as the Improving America’s Schools Act or IASA. Now if schools took federal monies, they were required to also assess the achievement of all students, not just the specific population focused on in ESEA. This test were designated to be administered by only during a few years of schooling, the NCLB act changed this.
George Bush’s No Child Left Behind became law in 2002 and mandated more grade levels be tested even in schools that were not receiving federal funding.
Obama’s initiative in 2009 added financial incitements to schools to improve and Common Core provided additional funding at a time most needed, so most agreed.
Widespread acceptance of National Standards Based testing came in 2014 when states were enticed by the millions of dollars that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was offering for adoption of the state standards.
This can be done based on test results. We try to meet the students where they are and take them as far as they can go.
Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational outcomes is our focus, so as to not overemphasize any specific areas. Then we of course make sure that our teachings are following the common core to prepare our students for future assessments. While doing this, our teachers provide fair, valid, and reliable assessments in their curriculum to best educate our young people.
