Food Ordering App and Mediterranean Harvest For Life Addresses Health, Disparities, Costs, Environment and Restaurant Viability.pdf
1. Food Ordering App With Nutrition Support Will Help Fulfill
Federal Hunger, Nutrition, and Diet-related Disease Programming
And The Administration’s Gap-Filling 5 Pillars
• Pillar 1. Improve food access and affordability: End hunger by making it easier for
everyone — including urban, suburban, rural, and Tribal communities — to access
and afford food. For example, expand eligibility for and increase participation in food
assistance programs and improve transportation to places where food is available.
• Pillar 2. Integrate nutrition and health: Prioritize the role of nutrition and food
security in overall health, including disease prevention and management, and ensure
our health care system addresses the nutrition-related needs of all people.
• Pillar 3. Empower all consumers to make and have access to healthy choices: Foster
environments that enable all people to easily make informed healthy choices,
increase access to healthy food, encourage healthy workplace and school policies,
and invest in public messaging and education campaigns that are culturally
appropriate and resonate with specific communities.
• Pillar 4. Support physical activity for all: Make it easier for people to be more physically
active in part by ensuring everyone has access to safe places to get active, increase
awareness of the benefits of physical activity, and conduct research on and measure
physical activity.
• Pillar 5. Enhance nutrition and food security research: Improve nutrition metrics, data
collection, and research to inform nutrition and food security policy, particularly on
issues of equity, access, and disparities.

4. Chronic Illnesses And Their Ballooning Costs Need To Be Addressed
– And The Mediterranean Diet Has Been Identified As A Key Solution
• Nearly half of Americans suffer from at least one chronic
disease (45%/133 million), and the number is growing.
• More than two thirds of all deaths are caused by one
or more of these five chronic diseases: heart disease,
cancer, stroke, COPD and diabetes
• Chronic diseases are responsible for 70% of deaths,
killing more than 1.7 million Americans each year
• Chronic diseases account for 96 cents per dollar spent for
Medicare and 83 cents per dollar for Medicaid.
• Compared with other developed nations, the U.S. has
ranked poorly on cost and outcomes, due to our inability
to effectively manage chronic disease.
• Annual impact on the U.S. economy of the most common
chronic diseases is more than $1 trillion, which could
balloon to ~$6 trillion by the middle of the century.
• Assuming modest improvements in preventing and
treating disease, by 2023 the nation could avoid 40 million
cases of chronic disease and reduce the economic impact
of chronic disease by 27%, or $1.1 trillion annually.
• “A large body of research data suggests that traditional
dietary habits and lifestyle unique to the Mediterranean diet
lower the incidence of chronic diseases and improve
longevity.”

5. Healthy Food Ordering App Can Help Reduce Racial Health Disparities -- As Manifested In
Disproportionately Higher Minority COVID-19 Deaths -- Which Were Fueled In Part By
Historically Higher Rates Of Unhealthy Eating
Strategies To Impact Minority Community Health Are Critically Needed
Diet Has Been Determined To Be A Major Contributor To Healthcare Disparities In Minority Communities:
Diet is a key contributor to disparities in many chronic diseases and conditions. Racial and ethnic minority
populations in the U.S. have high incidence, prevalence, and mortality and poor survival from diet-related
chronic diseases... Differences in dietary intake and dietary behavior are a key contributor to these
disease-related disparities. The elimination of health, diet and other health behavior-related disparities is
a major healthcare priority in the U.S.
… groups that experience these (diet) disparities also tend to have higher incidence of morbidity and mortality rates and
poorer survival for many diet-related chronic diseases and conditions, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension,
cancer, Type II diabetes, and obesity. For example, African Americans develop hypertension at an earlier age, tend to have
more severe high blood pressure, and are less likely to receive treatment. With few exceptions, cancer incidence and
mortality rates are highest for African Americans compared to whites and other minority groups. Type II diabetes is
epidemic among Native Americans. Obesity, as well as other cardiovascular disease risk factors such as metabolic
syndrome and diabetes are prevalent in Hispanics. Clearly, diet-related disparities are a major contributor to differences,
i.e., adverse health outcomes in racial/ethnic minorities compared to whites.
https://patientengagementhit.com/news/racial-health-disparities-by-age-paint-starker-picture-of-covid-19 ; https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2729116/
June 18, 2020 - New data confirms the stark racial health disparities for COVID-19
health outcomes. When adjusted for age, black patients are dying at a rate
3.6 times that of their white peers, according the Brookings Institution. For Hispanic
patients, that number comes in at 2.5 times the death toll of white patients.
The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a glaring light on racial health disparities that
have plagued the US health system for decades. Most experts agree this is not
because people of color are predisposed to contract COVID-19; the virus is an equal
opportunity illness that does not know race or ethnicity. Instead, years of structural
inequity in the healthcare system have made it more likely a black patient will
develop a chronic illness. And while COVID-19 may not know race, it does affect
those with comorbidities more than generally healthy patients.

6. “It is well established that CVD disproportionately affects non‐Hispanic (NH) blacks and
individuals of low socio-economic status... Significant innovations to the SNAP program to
encourage healthier diets are needed now, but modifications typically are incremental or
modest and, consequently, limit public health gains that could be realized.
Modifications to SNAP to incentivize purchasing of healthy foods could increase SNAP
recipient's healthy food purchasing power, and disincentivize or restrict the use of SNAP
dollars for unhealthy food purchases with a resultant benefit on diet quality, as well as CVD.”
Pilot provided 30% incentives for fruits and vegetables,
nuts, whole grains, fish, and liquid oils and 30%
disincentives for sweetened beverages, junk food,
processed meats…
• Estimated to increase consumption of healthy foods
by 19% to 24% and reduce intake of unhealthy foods
13% to 17%...
• Projections suggest potential for 939,965 CVD cases
avoided, 465,008 quality‐ adjusted life years gained,
societal cost savings of ~$42 billion.”

7. Longitudinal Studies Advocate The Mediterranean Dietary Pattern
To Counter U. S. Dietary Gaps, Impact Health And Cut Healthcare Costs

“A large body of research data suggests that traditional dietary
habits and lifestyle unique to the Mediterranean diet lower the
incidence of chronic diseases and improve longevity. These data
contrast with troubling statistics in the United States and other
high-income countries pointing to an increase in the incidence of
chronic diseases and the projected explosion in cost of medical care
associated with an aging population.
Many elements of the Mediterranean eating pattern associate with
improved health and longevity… a major question is what it would
actually take to shift current US dietary patterns across ethnic and
socioeconomic strata. We suggest that new initiatives led by food
industry and public health organizations (i.e. USDA, NIH, etc.)
should realign agricultural and food production with public health
programs so more people can transition to healthier eating.
Major economic incentives to produce and market foods to
protect the health of the US public should be developed not only
because of increased risk of chronic diseases, but also in response
to ballooning medical costs…”

9. Eleven senior doctors presented a
compelling argument to Prime Minister
David Cameron, insisting that it’s time for
Mediterranean-style eating to be placed
at the forefront of health policy.
“‘The evidence base for the Mediterranean
diet in preventing all of the chronic diseases
that are plaguing the Western world is
overwhelming,’ says Dr. Richard Hoffman,

Cameron.”

Mediterranean Harvest For Life®
Dr. Tim Carr, UNL professor of Nutrition and Health Science,
validated the potential health impact of MHFL:
”Dr. Carr mentioned this (MHFL) concept represents
leading a big, necessary change in our lifestyles;
and he drew the analogy between the Phil Skololof,
who single handedly led the change to eliminate trans fats
from commercial cooking, and MHFL’s strategy
to migrate people to this more healthy lifestyle.”

21. Many Communities Lack Access To Healthy Food Which Contributes To
Chronic Illnesses, Comorbidities, Mortality Rates And Healthcare Costs
“’Our clients want healthy,
nutritious foods, but these are
often hard to come by in the
community because of cost or lack
of grocery store options,’ said
Katie. ‘And food pantries want to
build their inventories of healthy
foods that they receive and request
from donors, but many people
have different ideas and definitions
of what constitutes a healthy food,’
she said.
Nutritious food takes on an even
higher level of importance for
those who are food insecure, she
said. “People who rely on
Hartford’s food pantries are often
managing chronic diseases,
including high blood pressure,
cardiovascular diseases or
diabetes, for themselves or a
family member. This creates a
secondary burden of finding food
that won’t worsen health
conditions.”

Costs And Reduce Dependence On Food Pantries, While Eating Healthy
People who were educated about how to eat, cook
and abide by the Mediterranean diet experienced
decreases in grocery bills, decreases in reliance on
food pantries, increases in produce consumption
and reduction in weight, according to researchers
from The Miriam Hospital and the Rhode Island
Community Food Bank.
Participants bought fewer and fewer sodas,
desserts, snacks and meat, and more and more
veggies and fruits.
