Editor's Notes
Today’s workshop is ALL ABOUT YOU! You’ll have an opportunity to reflect on the experiences you have had up to this point and determine whether or not you are ‘ON TRACK’ to reach your desired goal of becoming a healthcare professional. It is my hope that when you leave today, you will not only know where you are, but have a plan to get you where you want to be.
What is your motivation for pursuing a health profession?
Though important, this should only make up ~10-20% of your personal statement.
Take the time to investigate the profession you have chosen…AND OTHERS!!!
What have you done to explore the profession you have chosen?
Who did you talk with?
What did you observe
What did you learn (about the profession/about yourself) as a result of this exploration?
Ideas to explore:
Informational Interviews, Job Shadowing, Internships, Volunteering, Work, Speakers, Conferences
See TCC website for other ways to explore/gain experience
Prerequisite Courses/GPA
Admissions Test Scores
Demonstrated commitment to profession/Building of transferrable skills
Letters of recommendation
Goal setting can be scary for people…but if you fail to plan, you might as well plan to fail. Don’t leave your success up to chance! Things may not always work out as you plan, but that’s all part of the journey. Think about what you will do if your original plan does not work out. Will you give up on your dream, or find a new way to get what you want?
As you are developing your plan consider:
Where do you go from here? What additional steps do you need to take to become a more competitive applicant for your desired career?
Do you need to:
Improve your GPA?
Gain Clinical/Leadership Experience?
Build Your Network?
Now what questions do you still have?
We are here to support you in your career goals. Please utilize the online resources we have provided and reach out to us whenever you have questions in a 30-minute appointment, during drops-ins, and via email.
