Organization Description
Willow Tree Roots is an international nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity organization established to
empower women in developing nations to socioeconomic independence through entrepreneurship and
to provide underserved women in these nations with income-generating and business development
skills with a goal toward improving the community as a whole. Our approach is to guide women in
discovering their self-worth, spark their passions, then give them the tools they need to succeed as
business and community leaders. We believe that empowering women in developing nations can lead
to an empowered, sustainable and peaceful community.
Position Description
Willow Tree Roots’ Board of Directors is composed of leaders from the nonprofit and forprofit sector
who are dedicated to the organization’s mission. Serving on the Willow Tree Roots’ Board of Directors is
an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about strengthening leadership and
governance in the nonprofit sector.
Board members are expected to have financial acumen to read and understand Willow Tree Roots’
financial statements and otherwise help the board fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities. Board members
are expected to attend at 75% of the meetings per year. They are expected to read board materials in
advance of board meetings and come prepared to ask questions and participate in discussions.
Board members are expected to serve on one or more committees of the board and to actively
participate in committee work.
Board members are expected to play an active role in securing the financial resources necessary for
Willow Tree Roots to achieve its mission. Board members are expected to leverage personal
relationships and connections to help the development committee and staff identify and solicit potential
funders, as well as directly invest in Willow Tree Roots work by making a personal contribution each
year.
Board members are expected to responsibly represent Willow Tree Roots to their respective
communities and to advocate for Willow Tree Roots’ mission, programs, and services as appropriate.
Board terms last for two years and board members can serve for up to three consecutive terms.
2. Desired Skills & Expertise
We are currently recruiting for diverse leaders with expertise in the following areas:
Marketing Professional
Willow Tree Roots seeks a marketing professional with experience in marketing communications,
organizational messaging, branding, reputation, and organizational crisis and public relations
management. We seek a leader to provide guidance and assist board and staff with understanding the
value of marketing and external communications to advance our mission. We prefer a candidate who
has familiarity with social media and emerging networking technology and the ability to connect Willow
Tree Roots to media networks and partners who can identify and connect the organization to public
relations opportunities to increase our reach. Experience creating and telling compelling stories on
behalf of an organization or brand is a plus.
Advocacy Professional
Willow Tree Roots seeks an experienced advocacy professional who understands how and has
implemented advocacy strategies and campaigns to support a particular issue or cause. We seek a
leader to act as an advocacy leader and partner with board and staff to increase awareness about the
importance of our mission, influence public policy, and expand our reach. This individual should have
experience leading social movements and/or public awareness campaigns leveraging a variety of
channels, vehicles, and social media, with the ability to help connect staff with key decision makers.
Finance/Accounting Professional
Willow Tree Roots seeks a finance/accounting professional with expertise in reviewing and interpreting
financial information and understanding complex financial reports. We seek a leader to act as a finance
advocate and assist board and staff with understanding economic trends
The ideal candidate for our finance/accounting professional profile will possess the following
qualifications:
Experience with nonprofit financial management, including developing budgets, restricted and
unrestricted grant reporting, filing Form 990s, and overseeing audits
Willingness to bring a financial lens to strategic planning and decision making
Willingness to lead the finance or audit committee or serve as the board treasurer
