Area of Responsibility Summaries
The first area of responsibility speaks to assessing the needs of the target population, in
hopes of finding out if the program would be beneficial and to also find out what the target
population believes would be beneficial for them. I have assessed such needs for a Health
Education program that was based on breaking mental health stigmas and improving mental
health for freshmen college athletes at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The needs
assessment was completed by athletes, athletes from a mental health course, coaches as well
as athletic advisors. Following this summary is the needs assessment that was used for said
program.
Coaches/Advisors Survey Questions
Our senior Health Education project is based on mental health, specifically for freshman college
students. Our group has specifically chosen to work with the athletes but this project will be
implemented throughout campus for the entire freshman population. We are interested in
improving not only the college experience starting with the first year but we also aim to improve
student performance and the likelihood of each student continuing their education. There are
several topics that fall in the category of mental health, including but not limited to stress,
depression, anxiety, PTSD eating disorders, addictions and bipolar disorder. With the assistance
of the coaches, advisors and input from the students we will be able to successfully plan and
implement a Health Education that will benefit the freshman student population. This survey will
be confidential and should take about 10 minutes. We thank you for participation and willingness
to help us with our studies.
