A Brief History of agbaada Land, Iseyin
1. A BRIEF HISTORY OF AGBAADA
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
With the collapse of Oyo Oro (an old Oyo empire ), various communities moved out in
different directions to seek for places where they could secure refuge. One of such communities
was led by Akinpelu who later settled with his family and followers at the present place called
Agbaada near Iseyin sometimes in the late 18th
Century. His junior brother persuaded him to
move further, but he insisted he would not because of his old age. Then his junior brother
concluded by saying ‘Agba ma dun un da’ meaning it is good to attain old age. Hence, the name
Agbaada was derived from this saying. And he (the junior brother) then moved further with his
family and followers to Ado Hill where the present Ado-Awaye is. Hence, oral history often
referred to the duo of Agbaada and Ado as brothers- Agbaada the elder brother of Ado.
Therefore, Akinpelu was the founder of Agbaada and he became the first Alagbaada.
When he died, his eldest son Ateteba succeeded him and he became the second Alagbaada.
When Ateteba died, his junior brother Adenle Atologuntele succeeded him to become the third
Alagbaada sometimes in the early 19th
Century. It was during the reign of Adenle Atologuntele
that Agbaada community moved in 1821 to the present place called Malete at Iseyin upon the
appeal of the late Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Ajisibi (1821-1835). Hence Adenle Atologuntele
founded Malete in the year 1821 and he became the first Baale of Malete in Iseyin. However,
Agbaada land remains the ancestral home of Adenle Atologuntele family where farming is being
practiced as major occupation.
Agbaada land itself is along Iseyin-Ado-Awaye road bounded in the south by Jagun
family land with border at Odoobo, in the North by Erin-Odoogun, in the East by Akoko/Oluya
family land/Erin family land, and in the West by Oloyin family land/Otun family land/Odoogun
Ile family land/Jagun family land.
Agbaada is one of the Oyo State fascinating tourist site begging for attention. It is a
beautiful area with enthralling and attractive natural features, such as Arogundugbe, Olofin,
Osuku and Asa Outcrop Mountains. The most interest thing about Arogundugbe is that, there is a
long cave covering about 2km from Agbaada to Ilosi Abuke Village Mountain, where brave
hunters in olden days went for hunting.
Olofin Mountain is the highest point mountain in Iseyin.
