Jesus Restoring a severed ear - (Luke 22:45-54)
“
But Jesusanswered, “Nomore of this!” Andhe touched the man’s ear and healedhim”(Luke 22: 51).
On the night that Jesus was betrayed by Judas Iscariot, one of his followers used a sword to cut
off the ear of one of the men who had come to arrest Jesus. Rather than resist arrest, or allow
his followers to engage in violence, Jesus admonished them and told them to stop resisting.
Jesus then performed a miracle in which he healed the injured man's ear. Then Jesus
cooperated and allowed himself to be arrested. As explained in the Gospel of Luke:
“Whenhe rose from prayer and went back to the disciples,he foundthem asleep, exhausted from
sorrow. 46
“Whyareyou sleeping?” he askedthem. “Get up andpray so that youwill notfall into
temptation.”
47
Whilehe wasstill speakinga crowd came up, and the man whowas calledJudas, one of the Twelve,
was leadingthem. He approachedJesus to kiss him, 48
butJesus asked him,“Judas,are you betraying
the Son of Manwith a kiss?”49
WhenJesus’followerssawwhatwas goingto happen,they said,“Lord,
shouldwe strike with our swords?” 50
Andone of them struck the servant of the highpriest, cuttingoff
hisright ear.
51
But Jesus answered, “Nomore ofthis!” And he touched the man’sear and healed him.
52
Then Jesus saidto the chief priests, the officersofthe temple guard, and the elders, whohad come
for him,“AmI leadingarebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53
Every dayI was with
you inthe temple courts, and you didnot laya hand on me. But this isyour hour—whendarkness
reigns.”
54
Then seizinghim, they led himaway and took himinto the houseof the high priest.Peter followed
at a distance”(Luke22:45-54).
