Insurance USA
2016
7-8 September • Radisson Aqua Blu, Chicago
Connected Car Insurance USA 2016 (formerly known as Insurance
Telematics USA) will tackle the most pressing issues in the auto
insurance industry. For the past 5 years Insurance Telematics USA
has been the epicenter of UBI innovation inside the North American
continent. But as times change, so do the drivers of the auto insurance
industry. For 2016 we have broadened the scope of, and renamed, this
year’s show to reflect this. No rock will be left unturned!
As the automotive industry strives for new heights of technology, the
shockwaves are felt across the insurance ecosystem. ADAS are becoming
common place, autonomous driving is on the horizon, and consumers
are shifting towards new means of mobility (i.e. ride-hailing, P2P sharing
etc.). The general public is starting to lean towards less ownership but
higher usage of vehicles. Inside the UBI space there has been inevitable
shift inside the services offered and the devices used by insurers. Mobile
applications have become a popular alternative to the traditional
dongle enabling low cost solutions for insurers which are bound to
engage consumers.
But what does this mean for current insurance models? How can the
industry align to be ahead of new mobility services?
These are some of the prominent questions which will be tackled by
industry experts at Connected Car Insurance USA 2016. Open up the
brochure to see the detailed agenda of the event, the prestigious line-
up of speakers and a unique discount code for you to join the insurance
elite at the best price possible.
I look forward to meeting you in Chicago this September.

TRACK 1: THE EVOLUTION OF
INSURANCE TELEMATICS
Standing up to Big Brother
As times change so do the needs, concerns and queries of
consumers. Connected consumers are still interested in the data they
generate - who uses it, who owns it and who has access to it?
`` First impressions count. Instantly communicate to consumers the
value behind each product (i.e. safer driving, reduced premiums
and vehicle repair costs) to encourage free data sharing
`` Learn how to create transparency for consumers e.g. provide
easily accessible T&C’s to dispel mixed messages and
assumptions about how data will be utilized
`` Regulation is not one size fits all. How to manage a nationwide
UBI business where data collection is regulated state by state?
Map out the incoherencies to ensure full compliance
Gail Gottehrer, Partner, Axinn
Time to Pop the Question? Engage with Consumers
UBI adoption is just the first part of the battle. Retention is next. We
explore how insurers can leverage smart devices to enhance their
relationships with their consumers.
`` Generate new customer touch points with telematics through
accident management & assistance, driver feedback and
courtesy - instill a relationship based on positive experiences
`` Communication is key. Use the power of the mobile device (i.e.
push notifications & app gamification) to improve UBI user
experience, engagement and retention
`` Targeting your marketing. Which channels (e.g. TV, radio,
web advertising, word of mouth) best creates visibility and
understanding of UBI and how can they be harnessed?
David Niziolek, Director Countrywide Underwriting Strategy and
Solutions, MetLife
John Kramer, Director of Business Development, Octo
Mark Fitzgerald, Principal, Strategy Analytics
Royal Rumble: Dongle vs Mobile vs Embedded
Data collection opportunities are now significantly diversified from
the early days of UBI. Discuss the heavyweight showdown between
dongle, smartphone and emergence of embedded.
`` From installation fees to hardware consider the investments
needed to develop a UBI product based around the Dongle
compared to a smartphone alternative. Does low-price relay to
ROI?
`` Embedded and installed devices generate premium quality
data but the smartphone commands higher engagement. Does
granular data trump data generated from multiple interactions?
`` Best of both worlds. Engage with the possibilities offered by a
hybrid solution which take advantage of assets offered by each
solution (i.e. data quality, user engagement, ease of access)
David Niziolek, Director Countrywide Underwriting Strategy and
Solutions, MetLife
Bob Gruszczynski, OBD Communication Expert, Volkswagen
Group America
Linda Senigaglia, Enterprise Account Executive, Connected Car,
Danlaw
Imagine a World Where UBI is King
The goal for those in the business of UBI is to gain mass adoption,
but what will the landscape of auto insurance look like once this has
been achieved?
`` Contemplate a risk pool post UBI mass adoption where high risk
drivers and data privacy advocates are penalized the same, to
effectively manage the entire book of customers
`` Avoid the price race to the bottom by going beyond a price
centric approach. Can a reward scheme based on good driving
and loyalty attract and retain customers?
`` The Italian job. Gain insights from the world’s leading UBI market
to gauge what regional nuances has made conditions right for
mass penetration to apply lessons learned locally
Matteo Carbone, Principal, Bain & Company
Tune Insurance to the Fleet Beat
The primary focus for the use of telematics inside insurance has
been mainly consumer orientated. With the fleet sector worth
billions of dollars, how can this space be jump started?
`` Demonstrate the positive impact telematics can have on a fleet’s
bottom lines through UBI Value Added Services (i.e. driver
coaching, vehicle diagnostics) to open up a new market for your
services
`` Fleets come in all shapes sizes. Debate how to integrate
telematics with a single insurance policy for a fleet consisting of
different vehicle sizes, cargo and health
`` Create a fleet customer by offering an in depth change
management process. Enable fleets to unlock the full potential
of data to reduce loss-ratios in your commercial lines book of
customers

TRACK 2: THE FUTURE
OF AUTO MOBILITY AND
INSURANCE
The Mobility Mayhem and the Insurance Space
A significant shift in how people use transport is happening.
Ridesharing and other on demand mobility services are growing at a
rate of knots. What does this mean for the insurance space?
`` Understand how to align insurance solutions to match the new
shared mobility ecosystem and overcome the confusion around
who and what insurers are insuring
`` Realize how the inception of connected car mobility (i.e. e-hailing,
P2P car rental) will revolutionize the current models of auto
insurance whilst creating prospects for fresh business
`` Prepare for a world of less auto ownership. Discuss the proxies
(e.g. miles driven) that become relevant for risk assessment and
underwriting as vehicles are on the road more but owned less
Mariel Devesa, Head of Innovation, Farmers Insurance
Carla Bailo, AVP – Mobility Research & Business Development,
Ohio State University
Scott Reynolds, Audi Mobility Business Development Manager,
Audi
Andrew Rose, CEO, Compare.com
The Effects of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
on Insurance
Whilst many wonder what role and transformation the insurance
industry will undergo after the dawn of autonomous driving, ADAS
represents a much more imminent disruptive trend.
`` Understand how ADAS features such as cruise control, parking
assistance, collision warning and emergency braking will render
previous UBI scores inaccurate by altering driver behavior
`` Will automated lane centering, traffic-jam-assist, cruise control with
pass capability etc. reduce driver behavior differentiation? Do we
need to send actuaries back to the drawing board?
`` Contend with how much ADAS systems will affect the claims
process by increasing the cost of a resolution but equally
improving the efficiency of the procedure to forecast accordingly
Mark Fitzgerald, Principal, Strategy Analytics
Road to the Autonomous Future
Autonomous driving will disrupt the auto insurance space beyond
recognition. Make sure research and development and project teams
are in place now to stay ahead of the trend.
`` Autonomous driving is predicted to reduce auto ownership,
increase average mileage and lower accident frequency. So what
happens to risk calculation and assessment methods?
`` Technology update: The road to autonomous driving. Understand
the tech layers, roles and safety standards they have to adhere to
start thinking about how liability will be shaped
`` The transition to the autonomous world. When there is a mixture
of autonomous and non-autonomous on the road, how do you
address risk sharing among car owners?
Andrew Rose, CEO, Compare.com
Frederic Bruneteau, Managing Director, Ptolemus

TRACK 3: DATA ANALYTICS,
PORTABILITY & SECURITY
Cyber Security: Data and Vehicle Protection
Enhanced connectivity has led to a rise in cyber security threats
to vehicles. Connecting more devices to the vehicle increases the
security threat that insurers need to take seriously.
`` Negate unnecessary updates by building security into the
foundations of product development in order to reduce attack
services, diminished functionality and roll out delays
`` Compare and contrast the benefits of internal product testing
vs. third party to envision the best security practices which can
apply to product development
`` Get to grips with the vulnerability of data gathering devices to
discern the security risks which can result not only in data loss
but the possibility for hackers to take over the vehicle
Corey Thuen, Senior Consultant, IOActive
Data Standards: The Key to the UBI Revolution?
The transferability of data has been a long term challenge for the
insurance space. Data standards have been created and attempted
to be implemented but the process has not taken off.
`` Distinguish the value data standardization has with regards to
data accessibility and portability to improve your bottom line
and save time in the process
`` Discuss how the industry can overcome the main obstacles to
the uptake of data standards such as lack of regulation, complex
eco-systems and awareness of benefits to increase adoption
`` Explore the data sets that are mandatory within the current
framework (i.e. VIN, vehicle, device) and how these can change
once a business relationship is established to ease data transfer
costs
Acord and a panel of members Acord
The Data Exchange: The Answer to UBI Explosion?
As UBI has progressed, so have the methods of analyzing,
transferring and storing data. Data clearing houses and exchanges
offer a plethora of benefits and are set to transform the norms of
data transfer.
`` As UBI has progressed, so have the methods of analyzing,
transferring and storing data. Data clearing houses or exchanges
offer a plethora of benefits and are set to transform the norms of
data transfer
`` Deliver new products that utilize advanced analytics and new
data sets provided by the data exchange to enhance your value
proposition and consumer engagement
`` Recognize how OEMs can capitalize on driving data, and learn
how insurers can deliver customer premiums matching to the
risk of loss - rewarding good drivers with inferior premium
Steven Fernandes, Director of Innovation, Octo

TRACK 4: LEVERAGING THE
CONNECTED CAR
Dream Team: OEMs and Insurers Join Force
OEMs are moving even closer to the insurance industry through
partnerships and new products founded around the use of
connected car data. But what does this mean for the insurance
industry?
`` Leverage the OEM brand at the point of sale to drive adoption of
embedded driver behavior monitoring services so you can upsell
UBI programs whilst earning new customers
`` Identify common goals between insurers and OEMs such as
enriched data, customer satisfaction and brand loyalty to create a
partner strategy
`` Outline mutually beneficial deliverables for OEMs (e.g. dealership
maintenance revenue) and insurers (e.g. approved accident
management services) from a UBI partnership
Tracy Parks, Connectivity Business Development Lead, Ford
Juggling Data Sets
UBI has known its initial growth through utilizing events to
distinguish a score. However, the initial honeymoon period is over
and the industry looks towards bettering its services.
`` Recognize the benefits of event based data such as transferability,
accessibility and device interoperability to identify whether it has
the potential to fulfil data requirements
`` Understand the fundamentals of granular data and the
opportunities associated with accident reconstruction, advanced
analytics and in depth driver behavior monitoring
`` Distinguish the potential both data sets hold within UBI, underwriting
and the resolution of claims to develop a more efficient delivery of
services
TRACK 5: TAKING CLAIMS TO
THE NEXT LEVEL
The Power of Data in Claims
UBI has installed itself as new staple of the auto insurance space,
nonetheless there has been little usage of telematics and data
inside the claims process.
`` Tomorrow’s opportunities today. Get to grips with the potential
data holds inside the claims process from time/resources and costs
through to fraud detection and accident reconstruction
`` The truth comes first and early. Utilize connected car data to
detect fraud early through predictive analytics and real time data
drastically and rapidly improve loss-ratios
`` Understand the importance product liability will take in the future in
ADAS and autonomous tech. as the eco-system of the automotive
space becomes more interconnected and complex
Frederic Bruneteau, Managing Director, Ptolemus
Telematics: Streamline Claims & Accident
Management
We need to understand the value of integrating telematics into the
claims process - with a specific focus on events that take place after
a car accident.
`` Streamlining claims. Ensure quickly accessible and easily
interpreted UBI data to distinguish minor incidents from crashes
using direction of force, damage description and severity
`` Tell-tale telematics. Understand how telematics can increase the
speed and accuracy of reporting while mapping the accident and
areas of damage to the vehicle
`` How can telematics streamline the involvement of road side
assistance, emergency services, rental cars and repair shops to
reduce soft leakage and improve the customer journey?
