Photoshop
1. SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES
LEARNED IN PHOTOSHOP
A PowerPoint of detailing the skills I have
learned to use within Photoshop CS4
throughout my time in Media Studies
while using the software to create my
Music Magazine.
2. Image layout:
The layout of
image matters for
a multitude of
reasons, where to
draw the eye, how
to make the reader
feel etcetera but
how can Photoshop
allow you to layout
the image as you
wish?
• Resizing: in photoshop you have the ability to resize the image at
your leisure by placing your mouse next to the sides and corner and
moving away or to the image, grabbing from the corner will keep the
image in proportion while grabbing the sides will on affect either the
length of width of the image not both and pull away from the image
will cause the image to largen and pulling closer will shrink the
image.
• Angle: if you place the mouse close to the corner but not directly
upon it you can cause the image to rotate as you see fit if that is what
you want.
• Access: this can all be done as soon as the image is place but there
are certain this you need to do if you feel like altering the image later.
#1 is the unlock the image on the layers tab on the right, #2 is to hit
ctrl +T once your mouse is over the image for the prompts to appear
again.
• Reminder: All of this must be done with the mouse icon selected
on the right.
3. Image design:
Another key part of
Photoshop is the
power to alter the
image being used.
This will allow you to
reflect the tone of the
image in a more
clearer way or make
changes to the photo
that couldn’t have
been made when first
taking it.
• Cropping: when you have selected your layer and hit the crop icon then
you have the ability of cropping the image and
determining what you would like in the image,
it works a lot like the resize tool only the image
never changes and you still use the move closer/
farther away layout
• Removing: there is a wand tool that can be used to eliminate part of
the image but its important when using the automatic section type to
make sure the section has the same of similar colour as to allow a more
defined removal but if that does not work then manual removal is always
an option that can be used to make sure you get the pieces you need and
it can be invaluable at these task.
• Saturation, hue and brightness: there are three things that can
changed to affect the colour of the image, these are the
• Hue: the colour of the image itself
• Saturation: the intensity of the colour being shown
• Brightness: the different shades of the colour
• Opacity: the amount of lack of transparency
a image possesses
4. Image design
prt2:
furthermore there
are other means of
which to improve
your image that
can be used
through the
images settings.
• 1)double click the layer you would like to alter making sure you do not click on
the title of the layer or its image but the area that’s blank.
• 2) Once this has been done there will be number of
options available for how you want your image to appear.
• Blend options: in blend option you can
decide in what way the layer is blended,
where on the image as well as the opacity
of which the image is blended.
• Bevel and Emboss: this is when an image is given a textured look
through contour and texture the angle can determine in which way the incline
protrudes and the depth dictates the intensity of protrusion.
• Stroke: it is when you add a edge to a font that is normally a different colour
and the location of the edge can either outside, inside or centre the size of
edge can be dictated.
5. Font & Text:
font and text are
key features
when producing
a music
magazine so it is
important to
have multiple
options of
manipulation.
• Type face: it is key to know how to affect the appearance of
the words on screen and how to decide the font right for you
as to allow for your product have maximum quality.
• Choosing font and size: whenever you want to change the
appearance of the font you will always need to highlight it
and then click on either size number or type face, when this is
done highlight it and the hit either down to affect its size of
typeface.
• Sometimes it isn't just the font that needs changing but
instead its layout so once the text is highlighted you then can
click on a number of icons to change how the text is laid out.
• You can do the same to the space
between the text as well.
