Cliped Reviews - Final Draft
1. He’s done it again; the best laughs
all year around. How has famous
director Thomas Hunt (known
for movies such as, Ladies First,
Waiting, The Cycle and more)
pulled it off? We don’t know,
but it’s undoubtedly his break-
through film and the film we’ve
all been waiting for. Releasing
to the public across the UK late
2018, After You picks up on the
common actions we all do but
don’t notice. Why is this film
the one we’ve been waiting for?
Without spoiling too much, it
features great casting. Rupert,
Craig Winchcombe tries to take
it as a friendly misunderstanding
until Jack, Spike Leighton turns
it into a violent game. Although
the film features a male cast, the
everyday issue the film touches
on is universal across genders.
Compared to his previous film
The Cycle, director Thomas Hunt
has made a major comeback
with its editing. It’s the first film
he’s made that hasn’t included
choppy editing which worked
surprisingly well in building up
the tension between both actors.
Not only do we see the difference
between actors in editing but also
through the fantastic costume
design. Thomas Hunt has worked
alongside famous German direc-
tor Jakob Werner in several films
such as Eternal eventually making
a comeback with Japanese direc-
tor and producer Hiroki Sato in
the making of After You. Sato has
worked alongside Hunt on many
productions. Based on the one
minute short also called After
You, the film’s message is not only
comical but also an emotional
one. Through the comical row
between two people it shows the
emotions each feels after such a
simple event - Rupert, feeling an-
noyed and Jack, wanting to push
him to his limits. The incident
(that is then turned into a game)
started by Rupert, takes a differ-
ent turn. Whilst one would nor-
mally expect them to let the other
person in before themselves the
film portrays this differently as a
never-ending battle between the
two. One of the brilliant moments
in the film is when Jack, expresses
his anger so powerfully to Rupert.
Another interesting aspect is the
fact that both characters may be
aware of their own difficulties
behaving in social situations since
they have both enrolled and are
on their way to a conference on
how to make friends.
Hunt made a bold but brilliant
decision towards the end of
the film when he chose to hold
those long takes in managing to
capture Rupert’s emotion but also
capturing the reverse (Jack’s point
of view). Hunt also has a brilliant
eye for detail in creating tension,
when it comes to using close-up
shots - he helps the audience to
better understand the emotions
of the characters making them
feel a part of the ongoing tension.
Although the location of the film
is unremarkable, as Hunt put it
“both actors Winchcombe, and
Leighton have given a powerful
performance throughout the film,
so you almost forget about the
location and start to focus on the
characters”. Hunt has been one of
the few directors who has man-
aged to pull this off and when
he did, it worked well, extremely
well.He’s done it again;

RUNNING TIME 7 mins.
PLOT Important business

conference, not wanting to

Out of all the directors we’ve
reviewed, Hunt has by far been
one of the most challenging but
also most interesting directors.
He focuses on using technical
editing techniques, bold shot
reverse shots and even hand-held
shots to capture the emotions of
each of the characters in their raw
form. Hunt also managed to show
how two people handle the same
situation differently.
Hunt did a brilliant job directing
After You, but the question many
have been asking is if he’ll return to
make a sequel? And will it be just as
funny as the first?
