10. RESTORATION IN THE 1990’s
In 1994, the Buffalo-Kanazawa Sister City Committee with the support of the
City of Buffalo submitted a grant proposal to the Japanese Expo Foundation
to fund the redesign and construction of the garden landscape.
The garden was modeled on Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa, one of the
most famous gardens in all of Japan.

specimen Japanese Pines and
Maples pruned by Japanese

19. Several stone lanterns in addition
to a Japanese Shinto Gate were
imported from Japan for the
garden.

21. In 2008, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy received a grant from the
NYPA Greenway Fund to make additional landscape enhancements to the
garden.
22. A traditional Japanese erosion control method, Rangui Post, was
installed on steep slopes.
23. Over 200 Azaleas were planted throughout the garden, along
with a state of the art irrigation system
24. Since the October Storm of 2006 the BOPC has replanted over 75
ornamental Cherry trees throughout the garden

30. The BOPC is responsible for the ongoing maintenance of this beautiful landscape.
Along with the Friends of the Japanese Garden, Buffalo-Kanazawa Sister City
Committee and the City of Buffalo, the BOPC will ensure preservation and
enhancement of this cultural treasure for years to come.
