2. Beyond Noise
Through out my evaluation I will have mentioned these key points
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this
product?
7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
3. Conventions
My magazine was designed from other magazines with a punk rock theme,
which would be the base for my magazine. I wanted to make it different from
all the others, to challenge the latest conventions and give my magazine
something unique and a different feel to it. I was hoping that it would surprise
the readers, intrigue them and make them become more interested right away.
As you can see here my magazine has
used certain designs off of a Kerrang
magazine but have interpreted them
in my own ways. I have used the eye
contact technique to draw in the
readers and make them feel that the
magazine is directed to them. I have
also added a symmetrical barcode,
and poster segment special which
would act as déjà vu and trigger a
professional image to the reader.
4. Representation
My magazine is specific to a certain type of cliques in the teenage bracket. It is
aimed at rocky type people who enjoy this type of music genre. To create a
magazine using this type of genre is quite difficult as it has a very small target
audience due to it’s specific clique it is in.
It is obvious that the bands in the articles will be related
to the genre but I have added other techniques to match
up my magazine to my target audience. I have taken a
picture of a top band and for the photo shoot I allowed
them to wear their own clothes, which gives the
magazine a more authentic look. It also let’s the fans
know what their favourite artists styles are and how
they can keep up with the times. I have used a modern
font to tell the readers subconsciously that the
magazine is up to date and new.
5. Institutions
My magazine would be most likely to be distributed in super markets and
news agents. This is because teenagers are most likely to browse the magazine
aisle whilst shopping with their parents or just nipping to the store. I could
apply promotion techniques and they would get publicised quickly and
everybody who see’s the advertisement will be intrigued.
6. Audience
My target audience is a specific group of teenagers. This is called a niche
market as it is aimed at a small segment of the market. As my audience is small
the magazine has to have everything inside to draw the customers in. My
target audience was the base of near enough everything in my magazine.
My masthead was the main thing that the
target audience impacted as it is the first
thing the customer will see. It had to be
related to the genre and modernised to fit
with the target audience. The second thing
that the customer will look at is the image on
the front. Most people would only buy the
magazine when their favourite band is on the
cover, this is why kerrang will out only the
top bands on the front. This is to maximise
potential sales.
7. Attracting the Audience
I attracted the audience by using their styles in the magazine, things that they
would of used. I had to change most things to fit my target audience.

8. Technology
Technology has helped me to construct my
magazine really well. Firstly my ability to use
fireworks has majorly improved. I am able to locate
and use effects for example. In my media work I
have used effects to make my magazine more
professional. At first I would not use the effect tool
as much as I did not know exactly how well it can
improve my work but once I had used it and looked
at all the effects available my work then began to
improve. Secondly, for my front cover I had
experimented with hue and saturation levels on the
main images. I found a whole bunch of ways to
change each image on my front cover. Each good in
their own ways but I think I have found the perfect
combination.
