Vegetated Retention Wall Case Study: Village of Clagett Farm
1. CASESTUDY
RESIDENTIAL APPLICATION SI18
VILLAGE OF CLAGETT FARM
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MARYLAND
Application: Installation of vegetated retention
wall to support three model homes in new
residential community while maximizing useable
area on each lot and addressing the developer’s
strong preference for a green solution to complement
the setting.
The Challenge: Despite the onset of winter, the
project was placed on an accelerated schedule
to capture consumer demand, compressing wall
construction and vegetation time. The winter season
began with an unusually high level of rainfall.
Site Conditions: High rainfall levels resulted in a
soft, wet foundation. Designers and installers
were confronted with reinforcing a cut situation.
To economize on site development costs, two
proposed structures were conjoined to create
one reinforced wall.
Alternative Solutions: Modular block and
stone-filled, wire-form baskets were considered.
The developer ultimately decided to balance
cost with a more natural and environmentally-
friendly solution.
The Solution: Crews from Annapolis-based
Hardscapes Construction, Inc. installed a Sierra
Slope Retention System in November 2006.
The 3:1 (72°) vegetated wall measures 673.5 ft in
length, topping out at 13 courses with a maximum
height of 23 feet. The wall was constructed with
ungalvanized welded wire-form baskets, reinforced
with UV-stabilized Tensar®
BX1120 Geogrid and
lined with a permanent turf reinforcement mat.
An alternate backfill material was substituted for
the specified fill when it proved to be unavailable.
A contractor’s winter seed mix was added to the
wall face and quickly vegetated in the rainy
conditions. A perennial seed mix was added in
the Spring of 2007.
