Once in a while Tempo strikes a nerve; a response
that is immediate and profoundly satisfying. The
launch of the Tempo creed did just that. A teacher
from one of the schools saw the poster in our office
and said, I want one of those...for my students, and
for my family at home. The creed, something that
inspired all of us at Tempo, then became a gift we
wanted to share with the community. And that’s
why we’ve uploaded it on our Facebook page and
our website for download.
Excitement comes in many forms, and there are
great examples in this issue, including the story
of the British School al Khubairat kids who joined
Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones on stage, and
the event manager who decided to embrace fire,
and become a fire breather. There’s also our cover
story on YouTube sensations from around the
world, and Abu Dhabi’s own super YouTuber who
uploaded a ‘happy’ video, and won the hearts - and
views - of the world
In the spirit of sharing, Tempo presents Skill
Market in this issue to showcase twofour54’s
amazing freelance talent community. Hire them
and elevate your creative projects.

Matthew Quick, author of The Silver Linings
Playbook, made famous by the Academy Award-
winning performances of Jennifer Lawrence
and Bradley Cooper, presents a rollercoaster tale
of Bartholomew Neil, 38, and his therapeutic
coming-to, after his mother’s death.
Fashioned as a series of epistles addressed
to Richard Gere, who plays a pivotal role in
Bartholomew’s therapeutic journey, The Good
Luck of Right Now tackles questions on the
divine, love, Jung’s Synchronicity and evil in
the world.
When he discovers a letter sent from Richard
Gere in his mother’s underwear drawer,
Bartholomew, whose entire life revolved around
taking care of his mother until she lost her battle
to cancer, sees this as no coincidence, but fate.
Believing this as a sign, Bartholomew begins
his correspondence with the actor and lets his
subconscious free. He starts to question his
relationship with God, his seemingly aimless
life after his mother’s death, and the way
synchronicity works in the world. The daily
letters allow the reader into Bartholomew’s
deepest desires of helping others like he helped
his mother and his trivial life goal of speaking to
the “Girlbrarian”.
Struggling with a defrocked Catholic priest,
Father McNamee, who moved in with him and
suffers from bipolar disorder, Bartholomew
attempts to assess his role in the world
“postMom,” and wonders about a father he’s
never met.
Bartholomew reminisces about his childhood,
how those around him, past and present,
see him in a peculiar light, how the world
balances the good and the evil—referring to it
as the Good Luck of Right Now.
At the behest of his grief counselor,
Bartholomew attends a grief therapy
group session and meets Max, who has a
propensity to curse and firmly believes in alien
abductions. Soon thereafter and with the help
of his alter-ego, Richard Gere, and teachings
from the Dalai Lama, Bartholomew believes
in the wonders of unus mundus, “one world”,
where all are connected. With his newfound
and eccentric social circle, he explores his
limitations and fulfills his life goals.
The Good Luck of Right Now is, I believe,
Quick’s most interesting work yet, delving
into reserved and unprecedented issues
of our relationship with the divine, if God
really communicates to us; how grief can be
experienced in different ways; how no matter
the connection seems farfetched, individuals
are far more interconnected as it seems. This is
made possible by Quick’s quirky and peculiar
narrative, through the epistle form reminiscent
of Stephen Chbosky’s bestselling The Perks
of Being a Wallflower. Entertaining and
illuminating, Quick’s newest reverts to peculiar
characters whose appearances are traitorous
to their mental reality. The Good Luck of Right
Now is a profound book of good and evil, God,
and grief.

The Good Luck of Right Now
…if yeez follow me on Facebook, yeez may have seen this posting
of mine lately, which picked up a lot of traction:
…‘I’m holding a committee meeting right now with my
proofreader, my editor, my Kindle formatter, my publicist, my
agent, my marketing officer, my publisher, my promotions person,
my accountant, my personal assistant, my distributor, my budget
manager, my sales staff…. so counting myself in all of that, we are
now ONE person in the meeting… we Indie Self-Publishers rock!’…
…it seems it resonated with tons of other self-publishing quill-scrapers
among the Lads and Lassies of Blog Land… at the same time I read a
different article on Facebook where sumb’dy opined, basically, that
self-publishers aren’t really writers or professional authors… the torrent
of vitriolic disagreement to that lad’s diatribe was superb… for this ol’
Jurassic, it merely underscored the amount of work and invested time we
New Age breed of independents sink into our scribbling craft… marry that
with my tongue-in-cheek list above of melded roles and duties I assume
as a self-publisher and yeez start to understand why so many folks railed
against the other guy’s nonsense… there’s a certain point yeez cross when
yeez don the mantle of an independent scrivener… that ‘choice-at-the-
crossroads’ moment when yeez decide to go the whole nine yards with
this fabulous writing business… there is no in-between… ye’re in for either
0% or 100%… I’m happy to be totally immersed in it… my interaction with
fellow authors tells me I’m not alone in this… the onset of marketing books
on the internet and the eBook phenomenon have moved on considerably
from the ‘…it’s-tantamount-to-Vanity-Press-stuff’…and ‘…it’ll never catch
on’… to become a powerful force that’s rapidly changing the traditional
approach to book publishing… please don’t mistake what I’m saying here…
I am not knocking the traditional publishing route… it still runs half of
all book publication world-wide… but I believe that industry’s leaders
are now alive to the presence (and their own commercial opportunities
within it) of a vast global eBook market… as Master
Bob Dylan once proclaimed… ‘…don’t stand
in the doorway, don’t block up the
hall…’ …now if yeez’ll excuse
me, I’m off for another hat
fitting… see yeez later…

The American Ballet Theatre Enthralls
The UAE plays host to innumerable events, from high fashion, to world-class art to high-energy concerts. But there is something
extraordinarily special about ballet’s invigorating artistic energy. Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) brought us The American
Ballet Theatre in full flight performing one of the most entertaining classical ballets, Coppélia.
The performance delighted audiences, with Coppélia’s comic wit, tuneful score, charming storybook sets, and vibrant dances. The Dresden
Philharmonic provided a wonderful musical backdrop to performance. H.E. Hoda I. Al Khamis Kanoo, founder of the Abu Dhabi Music &
Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and the Abu Dhabi Festival described the event: “[This] is the type of performance that inspires Middle Eastern
audiences to realise why the theatre is such a magical place, and why dance is not a luxury or a frill, but a necessity of life. Without its
expression and curiosity, creative exploration and innovative discovery, we would not be able to think outside the box and create a better
future. UAE youth have the opportunity to take this country into a positive new era and I hope that exposure to the arts – through events
like tonight – will help them in their exciting journey.”
NYIT GIVES BACK: BLOOD DRIVE
NYIT’s School of Management organized a blood donation
campaign on its campus. The blood donation campaign was
co-organized with Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, who offered a
mobile unit to students and the staff of NYIT as well as other
organizations on campus. NYIT students organized the drive in
recognition of the critical shortage of blood in the country, and the
need to build awareness within their university, and the public,
about the importance of blood donation in saving lives.
“We have always given importance to corporate social
responsibility at the New York Institute of Technology. This is one
of the many ways we contribute to the Abu Dhabi community
every year, instilling amongst the NYIT community the need to act
as responsible citizens and serve the local community,” said head
organizer Dr Tareq Al-Tawil.
The High Atlas Challenge for Good

TEMPO TRIED & TESTED
By Diji Shujahi
With a name like Meat Co, you can’t blame yourself for having high expectations from the meat. The restaurant has a sumptuous
menu of everything from tender and juicy Wagyu steaks, to Red Snapper and Salmon Fillet. If you want to zone into burgers, there’s
still plenty of choice, including the Classic Burger, the Gourmet Burger, the Cheese Burger, the Rib Meat Burger, and Chicken Burger. I
ordered my burger medium, rather than well done, because I’d heard good things about the meat. The burger arrived beautifully placed
on the dish, and from the first bite delivered on quality – it was flavourful, and yet felt healthy and light on the stomach – with no
unpleasant aftertaste. Definitely one of the best gourmet burgers in town. -
THE MEAT CO
Eds
choice
'
The ultimate fast food – the hamburger - was introduced to the world around
1900 by Louis Lassen, a Danish immigrant, and owner of Louis’ Lunch in New
Haven, Connecticut. The hamburger traces its origins to Hamburg, Germany,
but it was in the 1904 St Louis World’s Fair that it made its international debut,
when the New York Tribune declared it “the innovation of a food vendor on
the pike”. Tempo visited a couple of burger joints closer to home…

WHERE: Hardees
What: Fish Fillet Combo
BUILD: Fish Burger
COMMENT: Hardees, another American
fast food chain, offers their sandwiches
with curiously shaped square patties.
The fish burger may not be good for you,
but it tastes surprisingly tasty for those
not averse to fried food.
RECOMMENDATION: Along with
the fish fillet, the mushroom and swiss
combo is worth sampling.
3
WHERE: Mc Donalds
What: McChicken
BUILD: Chicken burger
COMMENT: McDonalds needs no
introduction, and its burgers are among
the most widely consumed worldwide.
The McChicken is probably one of their
best burgers – they’re crispy and tender
with cheese slightly melted in a warm
bun and served with crispy golden
brown fries.
RECOMMENDATION: You always
know what you get with a
McDonalds burger.
3
WHERE: Max Burgers
What: Frisco Meal
BUILD: Beef Burger
COMMENT: Max is Europe’s oldest,
and Sweden’s first burger chain. Max
opened here with a lot of hype, and
frankly it delivered. The burgers are
tender, juicy and full of flavour. They
taste different from other burger chains,
possibly because the meat (according to
the chain) is sans growth hormones and
trans-fats. The French fries are hand-cut
and extra crispy.
RECOMMENDATION: Max tastes good
and good for you as well. Instead of the
French fries and soda you can have side
salad and apple juice. Check out their dips
as well.
WHERE: Johnny Rockets
What: The Houston
BUILD: Beef Burger
COMMENT: The embodiment of
Americana, Johnny Rockets whips out
burgers that are juicy though a tad under-
seasoned – that’s why you need to make
sure you have all your condiments up
front to season it to taste. You can add
sweet potato fries instead of regular fries..
RECOMMENDATION: The burgers are
more expensive than most burger joints,
but the entire diner experience makes the
cost worthwhile.

fashion
before
Name: Sarah Bushra
Age: 20
Nationality: Ethiopian
Student at NYU
Makeover:
How do you describe your fashion style?
Pretty laid back and nonchalant. Normally I wear casual clothes, usually a sweater and pants. I see fashion as a reflection
of your personality, and a necessary expression of the individual.
The Model
After the Makeover...
What do you think of the makeover?
The experience was different; I didn’t know before how much time and energy goes
into a photo shoot. It was very interesting to see that aspect first hand. Overall, the
experience was nice and I appreciated the effort of the stylist and the makeup artist.
What have you learned from this experience?
To never put too much make up on my face… (laughs) I think a moderate amount is
sufficient. It was nice to have makeup on for a while. Tanya [the hair/makeup stylist] did
a good job even though this makeover made me realize that I will always stay true to my
simple style on a day to day basis. Maybe I can do this for special occasions.
What would be your fashion advice to others?
Do whatever you like, but always be open to experimenting with new things, and
eventually choose the one you think is the best for you!
Tell us how you felt when you were being made over?
At first I felt uncomfortable because I am not used to wearing high heels… and makeup
sometimes makes my face feel itchy. But afterwards I thought the process was enjoyable.
What would your friends and family say about your new look?
I think my family back home in Ethiopia would hate it because they are very
conservative. But I think my friends here would appreciate the ‘new look’.
How did you feel wearing a shorter dress?
I would feel uncomfortable wearing this outside, because I always show respect to the Emirati
culture. Otherwise I still feel very much myself with the new look, which is good thing.
after
When Sarah Bushra, a visual arts major from New York University – Abu Dhabi, was asked by
her friend, Yuhui, a psychology major, also studying in the same university, to be her model for

QIAS OMAR
Qias Omar embraced YouTube from
the outset. The young Afghani-
American from California has been
making YouTube videos since late
2007 is someone I’ve also been
a long time fan of. Qias mainly
creates comedy sketches, parodies, and pranks. As
a child Qias would make comedic videos, whether
they were home videos or videos posted on MySpace,
so when YouTube launched Qias jumped on board,
posting his videos.
Qias made Middle Eastern and Asian sketches
with cultural refences that young Middle Eastern
Americans and Asian Americans living in the US
identified with. He features cultural traditions in
comedy sketches that break down stereotypes. His
first video “Afghan Fight For Dinner Bill!!” is an
example. His fans love his videos for their originality
and humour.
Aside from Middle Eastern and Asian videos,
Qias has made funny sketches and parodies of
trends and music. His parody of Maroon 5’s song
‘Payphone’ and his take on ‘The Harlem Shake’ both
have over a million hits. He’s also done a couple of
interesting prank videos, like the “Shopping Cart
Prank.” He also has the Thirsty Guy Prank where he
demonstrates how two girls, one wearing hijab, and
another wearing short pants, are perceived, and
treated differently.
Qias’s fan-base has grown a lot over the years, and
he now has over 70,000 subscribers. He’s travelled to
different events around the US and Canada, where he
met his fans and performed for them. A skilled actor,
Qias has a knack for comedy and timing. He also uses
his platform as a positive message to inspire young
people to follow their dreams, do what they love, and
to persevere.
HOBBIE STUART
No one’s YouTube star as a singer
is shining bright quite like that of
Roberto Stuart da Cunha Lima,
professionally known as Hobbie
Stuart. Hobbie is a singer and
songwriter from Brighton, England
who joined YouTube in late 2010 and has been
uploading covers of songs as well as original songs
ever since. With the help of his friend Alex Wells, he’s
able to put his own unique twist on all his videos.
Hobbie knows how to play the guitar and had a fair
amount of experience in music, doing shows around
his hometown. But it wasn’t until the day Hobbie
joined YouTube that he decided to pursue music
as a career, and from that moment on grabbed the
attention of hundreds of thousands of viewers from
around the world.
Hobbie has over 160,000 subscribers and has millions
of hits in six of his videos. His cover of Rihanna’s
‘Diamonds’ alone has over five million views! Some
of his original songs like ‘July Rain’ have garnered
critical acclaim, while ‘How We Lived’ is a great
example of Hobbie’s talent not only in singing,
but also in songwriting. Hobbie’s fans have been
supportive of his YouTube channel, and his approach
to music - from vocals, to song choice, to the way he
makes each song his own.
JORDAN MARON
Jordan Maron, a famous YouTuber
from California, has been making
a name for himself on YouTube
as ‘CaptainSparklez’ for quite
some time. In 2010 he opened a
second channel under the name
CaptainSparklez, to differentiate it from the explicit-
language format of the first channel. Jordan Maron
is a gameplay commentator on YouTube and also
comments on ‘Trials Evolution’, ‘Happy Wheels’, and
‘Portal’. He is also known for his parodies of popular
songs, changing lyrics to fit the Minecraft world.
It wasn’t until his senior year, that he began to make
‘Call Of Duty’ gameplay videos. Jordan was also
given the opportunity to be a director at Machinima
(every gamer’s dream) and then partnering with the
company and uploading content more frequently.
Now a fulltime YouTuber, Jordan is a Lets Player
with two video postings a day. At last count he has
over seven million subscribers and his channel is the
fifth solo-gaming channel to reach one billion views.
His parody videos like ‘TNT’, ‘Revenge’, ‘Kingdom’,
‘Minecraft Style’ and ‘Take Back The Night’ all have
views of between 20 million to 120 million hits.
Jordan has not only made a significant contribution
to YouTube, but also to the gaming community.
YouTube was created in February
2005 by three guys, Steven Chen,
Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, and
is now the third most popular site
on the internet, after Facebook and
Google. For most of us YouTube is
the first place to find a video, while
for a talented and creative segment
of YouTubers, it has become a
place of countless opportunity.
YouTubers are transforming the
face of entertainment, business,
news, music and more. Tempo’s

Pharrell Williams Happy in Abu Dhabi

– not only got selected as one of top videos but
had already clocked 190,000 views as Tempo
went to print! Omar stopped by Tempo to share
his experience…
Tempo: What was the idea behind your video
for 24 Hours of Happy?
Pharrell Williams encouraged people
from different parts of the world to upload
their own version of his single “Happy”
so he can choose the best ones and add
them to his longest worldwide music
video (24hours), which was uploaded in
www.24hoursofhappiness.com. I wanted to
change negative stereotypes about the region,
and Abu Dhabi in specific, by showing how
happy Abu Dhabi people are. I’m happy my
video was selected.
It’s an impressive video, with over 40
different nationalities participating. How did
you do it?
It took four days in total to shoot, but this
was over a period of a few weeks. There was
one day that we shot for 13 hours straight
in different spots. Most of the people who
participated in the video are actually my
friends. And convincing the strangers in the
street like the construction workers was an
easy job for me. Before I started shooting, I
planned not to be in the video so I can direct
the video better, but everyone made it so easy
and fun that I had to jump in and participate
with them more than once.
The number of views is amazing. Did you
know that was going to happen?
I was confident that the guys and I were
going to produce a good video, but of course
not 100,000 views in a week. What made the
video was its originality as people were being
themselves, and they were feeling the song
and the happiness in it… plus we had this
competitive spirit that our video should be
chosen with the best videos in the world.
Will you do more YouTube videos in future?
Definitely! But it’s going to be a challenge, as
people are expecting the next one to be as good
as this one.

Many years ago a man called Abu
Ras was the guardian of a souk. He
was very gruesome and people were
scared of him. He had a big head,
a donkey’s leg and a lion’s paw. He
hid from people because he was
embarrassed by his ugliness.
One day, as Abu Ras was watching
the souk, he noticed a large brown
falcon with a long nose taking a piece
of barley. When Abu Ras followed the
falcon all the way into the desert, the
falcon slowly turned to Abu Ras,
“What do you want from me?”

Abu Ras replied, “I want to know why
you are taking the barley every day.”
In reply the falcon said, “If you
really want to know, meet me here
in one month.”
With a stern face, Abu Ras said, “I
will, and if I am not convinced you
are doing good, I will punish you.”
After one month, Abu Ras went to
the same place and was shocked
to see a green desert with colorful
flowers and birds singing magical
songs. The desert even had a
beautiful, sweet smell. Upon seeing
this, he said to the falcon, “How did
you do this?”
The falcon replied, “These are from
the barley seeds I took from the souk.”
After that, Abu Ras sat with the
falcon and told him how he felt about
his ugliness. Then the falcon asked
him to bring one barley seed to him
the next day.
The following day, Abu Ras brought a
barley seed and the falcon dug a hole.
The falcon asked Abu Ras to put the
seed in the hole while saying “Bism
Allah.” Suddenly, Abu Ras started to
change and became very handsome.
He thanked the falcon and went to the
village, excited to show the people his
beautiful face. When they saw him,
they didn’t recognize him and were
surprised by how handsome he was.
After a few days, he got married and
lived happily together with his bride.
He never forgot what the falcon did
for him, and they became best friends.
ZAYED UNIVERSITY’S AL KHARAREF STORYTELLING CLUB was created to
enrich the legacy of the Emirati storytelling tradition and contribute to the revival of
this important cultural heritage within the United Arab Emirates.
Last year, the Club in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation
exhibited Story Mile a collection of 48 original fables and folktales, written by
students from the Academic Bridge Program, illustrated by College of Arts and
Creative Enterprises majors and translated by ZOWD volunteers into the language
of its characters, Emirati dialect.
The tales, which are soon to be published in a book, share not only the storytelling
traditions of the Emirates, but have also introduced other key aspects of Emirati
culture. These latest stories are creating new footprints in Emirati's storytelling
folklore, while preserving and reintegrating 24 archetypical traditional characters
researched by Master Storyteller Abdul Aziz Al Mussallam and designated by the
Department of Culture, Heritage and Information as genuinely Emirati back into the
cultural landscape.
“Higher!” Maddy squealed as I pushed her in
her favourite light green park swing.
“Hold on tight!” I ordered cheerfully, thankful
to be taking in the last of the warm Indian
summer days.
Maddy, adorably decked in pink overalls and
glittery Barbie tennis shoes, had always been
a pleasure to babysit.
“This is fun!” Maddy cried out joyfully in her
cute, high-pitched voice. “Push me higher!”
I pushed her as high as I thought appropriate
for a four year old girl, which wasn’t very high
at all. Maddy whooped gleefully, and swung
her legs back and forth in excitement.
I watched a group of pre-teen boys begin a
game of pick-up basketball on the cracked
and crumbling court next to the woods. I then
reread the park sign for the thousandth time
since coming to the park as a little girl.
ROBBERTON PARK OPEN FROM DAWN
TO DUSK.
Dusk approached much faster than in the
hotter months. The leaves had lost their luster
and were beginning to change from various
shades of green to muted yellows, burnt
oranges, bright reds, and dusty purples. It was
a shame that there’s only a two week window
when the colours reach their beautiful peak
right before falling off mid-October.
“Get me down, Emma,” Maddy commanded
politely. “I don’t want to swing anymore.”
I grabbed the swing’s chains and eased Maddy
to a complete stop before she jumped off.
“Ready for the slide again?” I asked playfully.
“No,” Maddy replied with frown and a tinge of
regret in her small voice.
“No?” I prompted, over-animatedly feigning
surprise. “Why not, Maddy?”
Maddy looked at the boys playing basketball.
Looking back at Maddy, I studied her serious,
far-off gaze. It was unnerving to see Maddy’s
demeanor change so suddenly from joyful
to dreary. Then I noticed that Maddy wasn’t
looking at the boys but beyond the basketball
court and into the woods.
“What are you looking at?” I inquired in
a soft, crooning tone. Whatever it was,
Maddy had been entranced. A few moments
passed, and Maddy said nothing. I touched
her shoulder, and I could feel her trembling
beneath my hand.
“Maddy, what’s the matter?” I pleaded gently.
“There’s a man looking at me,” she said
solemnly, her eyes still on the woods.
I didn’t see a man, only the kids laughing and
shoving one another on the court.
“Hey, there’s no man looking at you,” I tried
to comfort her as I removed a tennis shoe to
empty the mulch that had wedged its way into
my shoe. But her frightened eyes still bore into
the woods. I took her cold hand in mine.
“Maddy, sweetie, there’s no one there,” I
coaxed her gently.
Maddy stood silently, still clearly unsettled
by what she thought she saw. Her eyes, still
unwavering, became blurry with tears. I led
her away by the hand toward the slide she
had enjoyed just minutes before. Together,
we climbed a climbing wall of mulch dust-
covered, rubber black tires bound together
by thick rope. I’m definitely getting too old
for this, I thought, as my foot got caught in
one of the smaller tires.
I let go of Maddy’s hand to support myself,
but Maddy snatched it back. I tried to
continue my climb using one hand while I
felt Maddy’s grip become tighter and tighter.
We reached the wooden platform next to
the slide and peered down the slide’s silver,
metallic length swathed in mulch dust. I could
see our reflection on the slide’s surface. The
slide bore the same reflection as a mirror,
making it impossibly hot and uncomfortable in
the summer months.
“Let’s slide!” I encouraged gleefully, yet Maddy’s
little fingers still gripped my hand firmly.
“I want to go home,” she said, urging me to obey
her by tugging my hand and turning toward
the sidewalk that led back to her house. Her
eyes continued that far-away look into the
same spot in the woods.
“Just one time down the slide,” I pleaded,
pulling her closer toward the slide’s edge.
Every time I tried to distract her, Maddy’s eyes
still wouldn’t budge from the woods. I began
to think that maybe it was something that I
did. No, it couldn’t be that—Maddy still held
my hand in a death-grip, using me for comfort.
I remembered how rabid my imagination ran
as a child, chalking up this incident to nothing
more than child-like imagination.
Finally, I convinced Maddy to slide down
by telling her that we could leave the
park sooner if we used the slide instead of
climbing back down the tires. Before Maddy
changed her mind, I quickly searched for the
cleanest spot to slide.
The slide’s shiny reflection revealed an
upside-down image of a young man wearing
a dark gray T-shirt and black pants whose
tall, lean body stood as straight as a rod. I
couldn’t help but notice that the young man
stared at me fiercely, his sharp, colourless
eyes piercing me with extreme hostility. I
blinked twice, unsure that I actually saw
the menacing figure looking back at me.
But he was there. For just a few seconds, I
witnessed this unnerving image before it
was gone, disappearing just as quickly as it
had appeared. I looked in front of the slide
and on both sides, but the young man had
vanished instantly. There was no trace that
he had ever been there.
I was brought back from the disturbing
reflection by Maddy’s quiet, troubled voice.
“Can we go now?”
“Yes,” I confirmed, wrapping my arms
around myself to avoid the chill that now
permeated the air. “Let’s go.”

Tempo writer and award-winning
poet, Paul D, sat down with
photographer, Klara Urban, from the
Czech Republic, to discuss her creative
endeavors in the UAE.
PAUL D: What made you decide to
move to Dubai?
Klara: I dream a lot, and Dubai
seemed like a friendly environment to
nourish that.
PAUL D: When and how did you
start dabbling in photography and
graphic design?
Klara: Some fifteen years ago my
father gave me his Russian-made,
Zenith TTL camera to play with and
that was probably the beginning. I
would run around the garden taking
close ups of flowers, bugs, and,
occasionally, used my little brother
as a model. There was no dark room
access so I had to save up lunch
money, drop the film in the local drug
store, and wait for two weeks for the
images to be developed. With the
arrival of digital age, I became the
designated family photographer for
all the gatherings, trips, and birthday
celebrations. At that time, it was
pretty annoying. Traveling made
me realize visual arts was the true
passion. Photography was the perfect
way to capture things that my poor
memory pushed away instantly.
Flirting with graphic design came
as a way of venting visually. At the
moment I use Canon 60D, 5D, AE-1
SLR, and of course the iPhone.
PAUL D: In the past couple of years
you have developed somewhat
of a cult following with your
photography style. What would you
attribute that to?
Klara: ‘Cult following’ is an
exaggeration, but I hope and believe
there are a few lost souls who enjoy
and look out for my work. Developing
a photographic style is a never-ending
process. I am a stubborn person and the
idea of creating something for profit or
to hit a number on Instagram doesn’t
appeal to me at all. I just run around
the globe with my camera for the love
of craft. It has helped me to look at the
world differently; approach people I
would otherwise never have a chance
to talk to, seek places nobody else would
set foot in, and strive to polish my skills.
Photography, art, and design are my
passion and compromise is not an option.
If the stuff I do becomes popular and sells
that’s great. If not, I will still carry on
taking pictures and sketching.
PAUL D: I didn’t know you sketched; I
would love to see some of your drawings.
You’re also very visible on social media.
Klara: Social media is one of the best
things that ever happened to me. I would
probably not even speak English if it
weren’t for MySpace during its glory
days. People don’t seem to realize the
power Internet. Everybody now has a
free platform that allows them to reach
out to millions and if the idea is good it
goes viral instantly. Of course not all
gold sparkles and yes you require self-
discipline, but the key part is that the
kid with ideas and passion no longer has
to wait for the old man in suit and tie to
grant his approval.
PAUL D: What is your favorite social
media medium?
Klara: I would probably choose Twitter
as my number one medium simply
because it made me read again and I have
a space to ‘rumble’ during my insomniac
nights. The challenge I face is to make
peace with Instagram. Creating a profile
felt like joining the enemy. It’s a brilliant
idea with little to no aesthetic value. The
square crops, filters, and Selfies drive me
crazy sometimes.
PAUL D: You have an exclusive line
of custom-made phone covers coming
out very soon. Tell me a little bit more
about that.
Klara: Yes, it is a UAE-inspired
collection of graphic prints for iPhone 5
covers, and they will soon be available in
select stores around Dubai. It is a start of
a whole new chapter for me and I could
not be more excited. Dubai and all of the
UAE is an infinite pool of inspiration; the
diverse environment, architecture and
cultural mix are one of a kind, and I itch
to capture all that in my work.
PAUL D: What do you most enjoy
taking pictures of: people, city life,
natural scenery?
Klara: Most definitely people. When
I was studying in New York, my final
presentation consisted of close up
portraits of New Yorkers. It took about
three weeks of running around the city
with camera, approaching strangers and
asking them to pose for a photograph.
The stories I heard would be enough
material for a book. City life would be
second in line. The life within concrete
jungles is so dynamic and filled with
contrast, but photography has the
power to pin point the details, bring out
emotions and capture stories.
Paul D: Last question. What do you
enjoy most, paying for the bill or having
it paid for?
Klara: Blank stare

Maya Takahashi: This was undoubtedly the best night of my life. It
was an incredible opportunity to sing with the Rolling Stones. It was
truly amazing and definitely something that I will remember for the
rest of my life!
Charlie Day: This was the best experience I'll ever have - and for such

was exhilarating, scary and magical all rolled into one. I can't quite be-
lieve it really happened - I'm still wearing my 'stage access' wristband.
Jade Oswald: It was without a doubt the most incredible experience
of my life! It was absolutely mind blowing that we were given the
opportunity to sing with legends at such a brilliant venue! The whole
experience from meeting the stars, to rehearsing and performing such
a fantastic song, and to simply meeting other singing-lovers all helped
to make the whole experience so magical!
Lauren Jones: "I am still not able to comprehend just how amazing an
experience it was to sing with The Rolling Stones and how lucky I am
to have been able to do it. If only they had turned around, told us that
we were the best choir they had ever sang with, and decided to take us
on tour with them, then I could relive the coolest night of my life again
and again"
Alex High: It's not every day you get to sing in front of 40,000 people
alongside a legendary rock band with a combined age of around 260
years! Standing on that stage was the most exhilarating experience I've
ever felt. To tell the truth I was insanely anxious before we got called
up behind the stage, but as soon as I stepped out into the bright lights
and saw the ecstatic audience all my nerves disappeared and were
replaced by an enormous smile!
Joe Frost: ‘Mick Jagger and Keith Richards I recalled gave us a hearty
welcome and commended us for reacting normally to their presence
as opposed to screaming! After all it’s not every day you get to stand
next to Keith Richards! They put the roll in the rock on Friday night
and with a collective age of over 250 years they gave it their all just
like they did back in 1962. They are truly rockin’ their lives away and
I am so proud that I got to share a piece of the limelight with them, hail
hail Rock ‘n’ Roll!!’
Alex High: ‘It’s not every day that you get to perform with the greatest
rock band in history, in front of 40,000 people, but the day it hap-
pened for me was by far the best day of my life!’
Alaw Henderson: ‘The experience was absolutely breath taking, noth-
ing will ever beat this! Singing with such legends as the Rolling Stones
has made my life complete!
A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY
STUDENTS FROM BSAK PERFORM WITH THE ROLLING STONES
Friday February 21 was a very special day for a group of students from the British School Al Khubairat
(BSAK). Nine students were chosen to sing live on stage with one of the most successful bands of all
time, The Rolling Stones. The nine students were Alaw Henderson, Shanthi Tikari, Maya Takahashi,
Charlie Day, Jade Oswald, Alex High, Joseph Frost, Emi Pell, Lauren Jones, as well as myself, Kate
Denton and several other music teachers from Abu Dhabi.
Rehearsals were taking place two weeks prior to the event but we were sworn to secrecy by the event
organisers…this was a very difficult secret to keep! The concert was held at the impressive DU Arena in
front of a crowd of over 40,000. The choir were in rehearsals with the band during the afternoon of the
concert and we were all lucky enough to meet the front man, Mick Jagger as well as guitarists Ronnie
Wood and Keith Richards.
Our performance was reserved for the encore, which meant we were able to enjoy most of the concert
watching from the very front row. We were taken back stage fifteen minutes before we were due to
perform and handed our earpieces. The band completed their set with a fantastic rendition of Brown
Sugar and the crowd went wild screaming for more. This was our cue to take to the stage. Desperately
trying to settle our nerves, we climbed up the steps and took our places on stage. I am sure that
everyone who took part will agree that the feeling of stepping out on stage in front of over 40,000
people is quite indescribable; looking out over the audience really was a sight to behold. The music
began, and there we were, performing on stage with one of the greatest rock bands in history!
An unforgettable experience!

When I left the US for Abu Dhabi nine
years ago, I had my own business as did
most of my friends. Entrepreneurship
was becoming increasingly popular as
something to talk about and for the
media to cover. For more and more
Americans, “having my own company”
was becoming a goal for the future.
After eight years in the UAE teaching
entrepreneurship at universities but not
being an entrepreneur myself, I’m back
home once again running my own company.
What has changed after the financial
crisis of 2008-2009 is that more people are
turning to entrepreneurship in response
to unemployment or underemployment
or to benefit directly from the accelerating
economic development of Miami.
Two weeks ago I attended the Miami
Herald Business Plan Boot Camp along with
250 people of all ages hoping to become
independent business owners. A few
already have early stage companies. Most,
however, are just beginning to plan their
future company.
The Business Plan Challenge for which
the Boot Camp is a training session has
been held the past 15 years, co-sponsored
by Miami’s only daily newspaper and
Florida International University (FIU). The
Challenge has three categories: community,
FIU students and alumni, and high school.
Since I used to prepare business plans, I
was eager to learn how they have evolved
since 2005. Quite a bit as it turns out. The
Challenge requires a 2-page narrative
submission plus one page of graphics
outlining financials. The plans I wrote were
at least 15 pages with some as long as 30.
At the Boot Camp the five experts who
will judge the Business Plan Challenge
discussed what makes the best entry. All
are entrepreneurs – one is a billionaire –
experienced in creating, growing, and selling
companies. They agreed that no one is
willing to read a long business plan. It has to
capture interest in the first five minutes.
The key parts of a good business plan are
the Executive Summary, the Investor Deck,
and the Revenue Projection. Investor Deck
- a term I hadn’t heard earlier - includes
concept, market, competition, required
capital, and valuation. It used to take at least
10-15 pages to cover this ground.
A bad business plan is unclear – “full of
unnecessary words” – and doesn’t contain
“a story I can understand.” The writer
claims the concept is unique – “very
few concepts are,” said one panelist. It
contains confidential information about
other companies that shouldn’t have been
shared. A bad business plan isn’t realistic in
accounting for how much money is needed
to start and run for two years. Beyond two
years projections “won’t be right because
situations change.”
The panelists emphasized that the plan has
to express the entrepreneur’s personality.
If he/she failed with a previous startup,
that information should be included
because investors consider failure a positive
experience. If entrepreneurs are business
beginners, they need experts as advisors to
their company.
Most of the audience seemed eager to go
ahead with the Challenge and submit their
plan by the April 5 deadline. Judges select
the top three in each category; they are then
asked to prepare a 90-second presentation
for videotaping. The videos will be shown
on the Miami Herald’s website. Readers will
vote for the winners.
Winning doesn’t bring prize money, but
the publicity is worth it. Winners will be
featured in Miami Herald’s special issue
on May 19 and recognized at an awards
luncheon two days later; FIU will host
them at a reception in the fall. Amid the
celebrations, winners will be hoping angel
investors are paying attention.

Career Capital – those differentiated
skills that define and advance careers
– can often be the key to success in the
workplace. Reviewing the results of a
recent survey conducted by Accenture
(www.accenture.com/iwd2014) illustrates
the point. The survey, which was
conducted in 32 countries, including
the UAE, was released on International
Women’s Day in March 2014.
• 89% of female professionals around
the globe believe building their
“career capital” is key to success in
the work place
• 91% agree that the most successful
employees will be those who can
adapt to change in the work place
• 71% think the number of women on
boards will increase by 2020
• 70% think the number of women
CEOs will increase by 2020
• 44% say their companies are
preparing more women for senior
management roles
At recent events in the UAE and the US,
the role of women on corporate and non-
profit boards has been a hot topic. In Abu
Dhabi, UAE last month AmCham Abu
Dhabi’s Women in Business Committee
and CBD NOW hosted an interactive
seminar “Women on Board: How to
Attract, Retain and Promote Women on
Boards.” Two successful Emirati business
women: Shaika Al Maskari and Fatima Al
Jaber, who both run large corporations
and sit on many boards, provided insights
into their journies, noting that you have
to be a pioneer. Fatima Al Jaber noted
that there are only 15 female board
members in companies listed on the Abu
Dhabi Exchange and Dubai Financial
Market, representing only 1.86% of board
seats. Apart from being appointed to
boards you can also run for election.
Fatima is a pioneer in Abu Dhabi, as she
became the first Emirati woman to be
elected to the Board of Directors of the
Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and
Industry in 2010.
In Austin, Texas, USA last month at South
by Southwest (SXSW) conference a panel
of female entrepreneurs from Silicon
Valley also held a panel discussion about
how to become board members of public
companies. Silicon Valley is located
in northern California and is home to
many of the world’s largest technology
companies and thousands of start-ups.
According to a Gender Diversity Study
nearly 50% of Silicon Valley’s top 150
companies have no female executives at
all, while 84% of the S&P 500 manage to
have at least one.
When asked how women can get
involved in a board, some of the panelists
said one way is to start investing.
Becoming an investor is a way to obtain
a board seat of a company – if you write
a check, ask for a board seat. If you are
on the board of a start up, it will be more
work initially as you will be asked to use
your connections to get more investors.
Once things are settled, you will be
needed for strategic thinking.
Regarding compensation, board
members in early stage start-ups don’t
get monetary compensation, but usually
get an equity stake so you don’t receive a
check. Typically public and major private
companies give board members an equity
stake equal to a Vice President with a
shorter vesting period.
Women often assume they are too busy
with work, life and kids to join a board,
so it is important to raise your hand
and ask for board seat opportunities.
While the number of seats on corporate
boards is limited, there is ample
opportunity to sit on boards of other
companies, organizations and non-profit
organizations. Getting on a non-profit
board is a great way to gain experience
and connections. Finding a cause you are
passionate about and using the skill set
you have to further the mission of the
organization helps you to establish a track
record of being a leader.
I have served on school boards, non-profit
boards, and company boards and always
found it a learning experience. You have
to keep your eye on the prize and do
what is best for the organization and not
for any particular constituency. And
you should try to keep your emotions
in check, especially when serving on a
school board as parents’ passions can run
high. My suggestion when trying to get
the best people on a board is the three W
rule: look for people to serve who bring
Wealth, Wisdom or Work. And in the
Middle East, it does not hurt to add a
fourth: Wasta.

What Friends Do
HATING GOODBYES
Goodbyes are part of the expat movement
of our city. People come and people go.
They enjoy the good life here for a while
and then they have to go back home.
So are you telling me I must make new
friends and start all over again?!
So this is the little treatise I got up to write
in the middle of the night; my way of
saying thank you to all those friends: for
all the memories, the laughter and the
tears, not to mention, for all our doubts
and all our fears.
This is also a general thank you note to all
the real friends out there, for just sticking
up through trying times, for being there
when the world looked weary and worn,
for crying at the loss of a friend, for saying
things would look up, even when things
were really down.
True and lasting friendship can’t be
measured by the miles, but by the heart.
Yes, you can Skype, Facebook, and stay in
touch via email, but you shouldn’t forget
the great bard’s words “Keep thy friend,
under thy own life’s key.”
Friends give you hard doses of good advice,
even those that you may not want. They
have the freedom to say ‘shaadupp’ when
you rave and rant for too long. I have a
dear friend who cries bitterly over the
terrible things she sees on TV, and even
gets hysterical until we tell her “Enough!
Stop watching television!” Friends can yell
at you like that, without mincing words.
They can tell you to hurry up if they catch
you dilly-dallying, and quit if you’re on the
wrong path. They have the extreme freedom
to tell you if you are getting too fat, terribly
thin, have stains on your shirt, smudged up
Why Friends Go?
By Marien Oomen
There is one thing I don’t like about
living here: dealing with goodbyes. I
don’t believe I can ever be convinced to
change my mind, and this is my warning
to newcomers to expect, you will make
friends…really good friends, and then one
day a lightening bolt will hit you, because
it will be time to say goodbye.
Last year my dear friend Robine went away
to Capetown, Bijila went to Calgary, and then
Anne went away to Cyprus, then Cindy went
back to Boston, and now Angelique’s leaving.
Good byes are always sad, and so are the
farewell events. Songs have been sung,
short speeches recited, and lyrics changed
to suit the sad occasion. I remember one of
my friends putting up a hard exterior at the
farewell lunch, then crying her heart out like
a bruised seven year old.
TEEN ANGST - A teen’s point of view
Three disturbing cases of teen suicide
in the UAE were reported in the news
recently, and all were deemed the result
of stress and unresolved family matters.
Tempo turned to a teen to get a teenager’s
view. Manisha Manikuttan expresses her
feelings, and in her own words…
How many of you have done something
you really didn’t want to do just to fit in
with your friends? How many of you
tried to cut yourself out of teen pressure?
When in high school, everyone is
just trying to fit in, if you don’t wear
jeans or if you are not active in social
networking sites like Facebook, you are
considered as weird and not cool. I have
seen many teens spending their parent’s
hard-worked money lavishly on stylish
clothes, new gadgets, drinks, drugs and
whatnot just to become ‘cool’ and to
impress their peers.
The problem starts when one follows the
slogan “come on, everybody’s doing it’.’
Curiosity makes youth try something.
What matters to teens most is how they
look in others’ eyes. Many of them spend
a lot more time with their friends, and
a whole lot less time with their parents,
therefore they try to adopt what their
friends do as a routine. But there are
many who cannot afford “cool stuff,” so
they feel dejected, lonely and are often
isolated by peer groups. They get nervous
attacks, burnouts, depressions and a few
find “suicide” as the only solution to all
their problems. Now tell me, is it worth
risking my life, just to be cool?
Another reason for the unrest among
students is the out dated system of
education and examination. Frankly
speaking, in many parts of the world the
system of education is rotten to the very
core. I don’t think that examinations are
the real tests of a student’s achievements.
Students should be kept busy in creative,
fruitful and social activities. Students
think, “you don’t have to understand what
you are taught, just be able to repeat the
facts mentioned in textbooks in the exams
to score good grades’’. This reminds me of a
quote by Albert Einstein “learning facts is
not education, but its ideas that matter’’.
Today’s education is more job-oriented.
Youth get frustrated when they see a
great deal of disparity between the theory
and its application. They wonder whether
all that they have learnt would ever
come into use. At school students often
feel deprived, and stressed because of a
need to strive for perfection, worry over
grades, parental pressure, competition,
tough class load and late night homework.
During revision and exams, anxiety and
stress are common problems for students,
even for those who appear confident
and calm. When students fail to fulfill
the dreams and the high expectations
of their parents and teachers, they feel
a sense of loss. Unable to face the bitter
realities of life, a small number may resort
to violence and commit suicide. I think
parents should be very careful while
dealing with their children. They should
give their children some space. Parents
who continue to communicate with their
teens, even when there are conflicts,
actually maintain closer relationships.
Being a teen I find solutions to all these
problems is by choosing right friends.
Friends who are positive, supportive and
funny can reduce your stress to a great
extent. Having a good group of friends
will help us to maintain a healthy and
enjoyable lifestyle. Remember that life is
hard but you have to learn to deal with
your problems instead of running away
them. Got a problem? Attack it! By doing
so you will turn out to be the real “hero”
of your life.

A doc from the Bronx

As a hospital worker, I see my fair share
of weird stuff and I get a front row seat
to all the insanity. For medical staff,
this is “business as usual,” but I really
wonder what it’s like for the others…
such as the clerks, cleaning staff,
interpreters, etc? Is it really normal for
them to see the suffering of trauma, or
death up close? It’s “normal” for me, but
at the same time, it’s really not! What
comes to mind is that I have seen my
share of kids who have fallen out of
buildings here, and it’s always awful.
Certain faces and stories come to mind
as just weird.
A few years ago, a lady came to the
hospital after she fell and struck her
neck on the end of a metal pole. OUCH!
All I could see was a decent sized “flesh
wound”. While examining her, she tried
to stifle a cough, and as she did so, a
nice spray of blood and a flap of skin
shot out from her neck, revealing a
thumb sized hole! She had managed to
give herself a “tracheotomy” (look it up)
- great shot. Thankfully this was her
only injury (when I say, “only” injury,
I am in no way minimizing it) and she
did well after surgery.
A few weeks later, a driver was
brought in after wrecking his car. His
bloodied face was quite distorted, but
he was talking and was making sense.
During his evaluation he kept blowing
his nose, but the blood-snot mix was
blowing out of a hole in his forehead.
Let’s be honest here…this is one of
those things that when you see it, you
can’t unsee it. To make matters worse,
when we laid him down, it appeared
that his face was sinking into his head.
That’s exactly what I saw. Between
his sinking face and his forehead
“blowhole,” I promptly sat him up
to minimize his chances of choking.
This guy had basically smashed all
the bones holding his face together.
Luckily he was spared any other
significant injuries.
Little do these folks know, that they are
legends! In my world, where the truth
is much stranger than fiction, these
folks have managed to distinguish
themselves in ways they had never
imagined or intended. Personally and
professionally I hope I never reach
a point where nothing fazes me any
more, because becoming shocked
reminds me of my humanity.
Did You See That?!
HEALTHY FOODS, GOOD EATS!
By Annie John Kalarickal
March marked International Nutrition
month. But while March is over, our
commitment to healthy dietary habits as a
lifestyle choice, should remain with us all
our lives.
We all know that nutrition is the study of
food at work in our bodies. In fact nutrition
is the building blocks of life. Good nutrition
means getting the right amount of nutrients
from healthy foods in the right combinations.
Nutrition is at work during our entire
life-cycle — from infancy to adolescence,
adulthood to senior years — and it can be
the antidote for many of today’s common
problems, such as stress, pollution, sexual
vitality, and disease prevention.
A poor diet can have a serious impact on
health, and rob you of your freedom. We
need to be reminded every day, and every
month, to make the right choices, and achieve
the right balance of nutrients.
ENJOY THE TASTE OF EATING RIGHT
How can you enjoy the ‘taste of eating right’?
Well, the first step toward healthier eating
is to prepare and enjoy more meals at home.
Restaurant meals may look attractive and
appetizing, but they can be loaded with calories,
contributing to poor weight control. They are
high in saturated fats, sodium and sugar.
Well-nourished and active children, grow,
develop, and learn better. Good nutrition
also helps ensures a healthy pregnancy and a
successful breast-feeding experience. Healthy
eating helps adults and seniors feel their best,
become more productive, and lower their risk
for a variety of conditions.
The Healthy Plate
This starts with choosing a small plate, and
filling half of it with vegetables and fruits,
including antioxidant-rich berries, leafy
greens and dark orange vegetables. Be sure to
opt for vegetables, such as asparagus, broccoli,
Brussels sprouts, and spinach, and steam for a
quick, convenient and nutrient-rich base for
your meal.
Add a protein to your plate– consider seafood,
skinless poultry, and lean meats, as well
as meatless options, including reduced fat
cheese, nuts and nut butters, seeds, beans and
soy products, tofu and tempeh. To complete
your meal, include a small portion of a whole-
grain or a starchy vegetable to fill about a
quarter of your plate. Consider options such
as brown rice, barley, bulgur, corn, green peas,
potatoes and winter squash. These foods are
excellent sources of B-vitamins as well as
dietary fiber.
World oral health day was also celebrated in
March, and the announcement was made that
three out of four children were found to have
dental caries. The relationship between food
and dental caries is strong. A diet rich in sugar
and starch increases the risk of tooth decay,
especially those foods that are sticky, because
they are more likely to remain on the surface
of the teeth. Eat a nutritious and balanced
diet that is rich in calcium and phosphorus, to
help strengthen teeth development. Limiting
snacks is essential, so be sure to avoid
carbohydrates, candy, caramels and chips, as
well as sweetened juices and soda drinks.

The UAE is rich with cultural diversity,
and considerable talent. Perhaps one
of the most unique individuals is the
‘human torch,’ Syrian Mohammed
Khair, or MK, 26 years old, who is a fire
performer! He is also as a university
student reading environmental
science, and a Redbull events promoter.
Tempo learned quickly that MK is hot!
Did you start by playing with fire?
For me it was always about
science, and it quickly became my
passion. In fact I decided to major in
environmental science to get a chance
to conduct crazy science experiments.
How did you learn to breath fire?
I was trained by a professional fire
breather, called Kimberly Brown.
How did you come up with the crazy
idea to learn?
(Laughing) The idea came out of
boredom… I was recalling how I burnt
my face in a past accident, so that
triggered an internal challenge that I
set for myself to get over my fear by
training myself to deal with fire…
What did you use?
Homemadeequipment(smilesdeviously).
What did the experience feel like?
It felt amazing, freeing and crazy;
nobody had done a stunt like that in
the UAE before.
Did you get injured?
I got second degree burns on my left arm…
another time I accidently burned some of
my facial hair while performing.
You call yourself the Human Torch, why?
After The Human Torch - the super-hero
from the movie ‘The Fantastic Four’.
What are the dangers of
fire performances?
You perform in front of a huge crowd so
it is extremely important to keep a safe
distance. At one event there was a stupid
drunk who took my fire tools and set a
blaze to impress the girls. It could have
been very dangerous but I jumped in to
avert a disaster.
Can you tell us the secret to fire breathing?
Well for starters, you need guts, strong
lungs, as well as mental and physical
endurance. Stage fear is a definite no
because you’ll definitely be performing in
front of a big crowd. When you get nervous
your breathing becomes unstable, so you
need to be completely fit and confident.
Most importantly you need to think fast on
your feet in case of an emergency.
Where can we see you perform?
Outdoors events, parties, festivals in Abu
Dhabi and Dubai.
What would you advice someone who
wants to try this experience?
Don’t every try this unless a professional
is supervising you. It might look cool and
easy but it takes training and time.

MEDIA LICENCE NO. 1/105866/24295 Once in a while Tempo strikes a nerve; a response that is immediate and profoundly satisfying. The launch of the Tempo creed did just that. A teacher from one of the schools saw the poster in our office and said, I want one of those...for my students, and for my family at home. The creed, something that inspired all of us at Tempo, then became a gift we wanted to share with the community. And that’s why we’ve uploaded it on our Facebook page and our website for download. Excitement comes in many forms, and there are great examples in this issue, including the story of the British School al Khubairat kids who joined Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones on stage, and the event manager who decided to embrace fire, and become a fire breather. There’s also our cover story on YouTube sensations from around the world, and Abu Dhabi’s own super YouTuber who uploaded a ‘happy’ video, and won the hearts - and views - of the world In the spirit of sharing, Tempo presents Skill Market in this issue to showcase twofour54’s amazing freelance talent community. Hire them and elevate your creative projects. If you want her to review a book you fell in love with, or leave a comment on her book bulletin, then you can reach her on: www.tempoplanet.com/category/talking-books THE BLOG By Seumas Gallacher …one head, so many hats… think I’ll buy a helmet store, all for myself… Follow Seumas on Twitter: @seumasgallacher Matthew Quick, author of The Silver Linings Playbook, made famous by the Academy Award- winning performances of Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, presents a rollercoaster tale of Bartholomew Neil, 38, and his therapeutic coming-to, after his mother’s death. Fashioned as a series of epistles addressed to Richard Gere, who plays a pivotal role in Bartholomew’s therapeutic journey, The Good Luck of Right Now tackles questions on the divine, love, Jung’s Synchronicity and evil in the world. When he discovers a letter sent from Richard Gere in his mother’s underwear drawer, Bartholomew, whose entire life revolved around taking care of his mother until she lost her battle to cancer, sees this as no coincidence, but fate. Believing this as a sign, Bartholomew begins his correspondence with the actor and lets his subconscious free. He starts to question his relationship with God, his seemingly aimless life after his mother’s death, and the way synchronicity works in the world. The daily letters allow the reader into Bartholomew’s deepest desires of helping others like he helped his mother and his trivial life goal of speaking to the “Girlbrarian”. Struggling with a defrocked Catholic priest, Father McNamee, who moved in with him and suffers from bipolar disorder, Bartholomew attempts to assess his role in the world “postMom,” and wonders about a father he’s never met. Bartholomew reminisces about his childhood, how those around him, past and present, see him in a peculiar light, how the world balances the good and the evil—referring to it as the Good Luck of Right Now. At the behest of his grief counselor, Bartholomew attends a grief therapy group session and meets Max, who has a propensity to curse and firmly believes in alien abductions. Soon thereafter and with the help of his alter-ego, Richard Gere, and teachings from the Dalai Lama, Bartholomew believes in the wonders of unus mundus, “one world”, where all are connected. With his newfound and eccentric social circle, he explores his limitations and fulfills his life goals. The Good Luck of Right Now is, I believe, Quick’s most interesting work yet, delving into reserved and unprecedented issues of our relationship with the divine, if God really communicates to us; how grief can be experienced in different ways; how no matter the connection seems farfetched, individuals are far more interconnected as it seems. This is made possible by Quick’s quirky and peculiar narrative, through the epistle form reminiscent of Stephen Chbosky’s bestselling The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Entertaining and illuminating, Quick’s newest reverts to peculiar characters whose appearances are traitorous to their mental reality. The Good Luck of Right Now is a profound book of good and evil, God, and grief. by Matthew Quick , HarperCollins 2014 The Good Luck of Right Now …if yeez follow me on Facebook, yeez may have seen this posting of mine lately, which picked up a lot of traction: …‘I’m holding a committee meeting right now with my proofreader, my editor, my Kindle formatter, my publicist, my agent, my marketing officer, my publisher, my promotions person, my accountant, my personal assistant, my distributor, my budget manager, my sales staff…. so counting myself in all of that, we are now ONE person in the meeting… we Indie Self-Publishers rock!’… …it seems it resonated with tons of other self-publishing quill-scrapers among the Lads and Lassies of Blog Land… at the same time I read a different article on Facebook where sumb’dy opined, basically, that self-publishers aren’t really writers or professional authors… the torrent of vitriolic disagreement to that lad’s diatribe was superb… for this ol’ Jurassic, it merely underscored the amount of work and invested time we New Age breed of independents sink into our scribbling craft… marry that with my tongue-in-cheek list above of melded roles and duties I assume as a self-publisher and yeez start to understand why so many folks railed against the other guy’s nonsense… there’s a certain point yeez cross when yeez don the mantle of an independent scrivener… that ‘choice-at-the- crossroads’ moment when yeez decide to go the whole nine yards with this fabulous writing business… there is no in-between… ye’re in for either 0% or 100%… I’m happy to be totally immersed in it… my interaction with fellow authors tells me I’m not alone in this… the onset of marketing books on the internet and the eBook phenomenon have moved on considerably from the ‘…it’s-tantamount-to-Vanity-Press-stuff’…and ‘…it’ll never catch on’… to become a powerful force that’s rapidly changing the traditional approach to book publishing… please don’t mistake what I’m saying here… I am not knocking the traditional publishing route… it still runs half of all book publication world-wide… but I believe that industry’s leaders are now alive to the presence (and their own commercial opportunities within it) of a vast global eBook market… as Master Bob Dylan once proclaimed… ‘…don’t stand in the doorway, don’t block up the hall…’ …now if yeez’ll excuse me, I’m off for another hat fitting… see yeez later…

But there is something extraordinarily special about ballet’s invigorating artistic energy. Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) brought us The American Ballet Theatre in full flight performing one of the most entertaining classical ballets, Coppélia. The performance delighted audiences, with Coppélia’s comic wit, tuneful score, charming storybook sets, and vibrant dances. The Dresden Philharmonic provided a wonderful musical backdrop to performance. H.E. Hoda I. Al Khamis Kanoo, founder of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and the Abu Dhabi Festival described the event: “[This] is the type of performance that inspires Middle Eastern audiences to realise why the theatre is such a magical place, and why dance is not a luxury or a frill, but a necessity of life. Without its expression and curiosity, creative exploration and innovative discovery, we would not be able to think outside the box and create a better future. UAE youth have the opportunity to take this country into a positive new era and I hope that exposure to the arts – through events like tonight – will help them in their exciting journey.” NYIT GIVES BACK: BLOOD DRIVE NYIT’s School of Management organized a blood donation campaign on its campus. The blood donation campaign was co-organized with Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, who offered a mobile unit to students and the staff of NYIT as well as other organizations on campus. NYIT students organized the drive in recognition of the critical shortage of blood in the country, and the need to build awareness within their university, and the public, about the importance of blood donation in saving lives. “We have always given importance to corporate social responsibility at the New York Institute of Technology. This is one of the many ways we contribute to the Abu Dhabi community every year, instilling amongst the NYIT community the need to act as responsible citizens and serve the local community,” said head organizer Dr Tareq Al-Tawil. • 12. TEMPO TRIED & TESTED By Diji Shujahi With a name like Meat Co, you can’t blame yourself for having high expectations from the meat. The restaurant has a sumptuous menu of everything from tender and juicy Wagyu steaks, to Red Snapper and Salmon Fillet. If you want to zone into burgers, there’s still plenty of choice, including the Classic Burger, the Gourmet Burger, the Cheese Burger, the Rib Meat Burger, and Chicken Burger. I ordered my burger medium, rather than well done, because I’d heard good things about the meat. The burger arrived beautifully placed on the dish, and from the first bite delivered on quality – it was flavourful, and yet felt healthy and light on the stomach – with no unpleasant aftertaste. Definitely one of the best gourmet burgers in town. - THE MEAT CO Eds choice ' The ultimate fast food – the hamburger - was introduced to the world around 1900 by Louis Lassen, a Danish immigrant, and owner of Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut. The hamburger traces its origins to Hamburg, Germany, but it was in the 1904 St Louis World’s Fair that it made its international debut, when the New York Tribune declared it “the innovation of a food vendor on the pike”. Tempo visited a couple of burger joints closer to home… buildinga better burger www. tempoplanet.com12 WHERE: Hardees What: Fish Fillet Combo BUILD: Fish Burger COMMENT: Hardees, another American fast food chain, offers their sandwiches with curiously shaped square patties. The fish burger may not be good for you, but it tastes surprisingly tasty for those not averse to fried food. RECOMMENDATION: Along with the fish fillet, the mushroom and swiss combo is worth sampling. 3 WHERE: Mc Donalds What: McChicken BUILD: Chicken burger COMMENT: McDonalds needs no introduction, and its burgers are among the most widely consumed worldwide. The McChicken is probably one of their best burgers – they’re crispy and tender with cheese slightly melted in a warm bun and served with crispy golden brown fries. RECOMMENDATION: You always know what you get with a McDonalds burger. 3 WHERE: Max Burgers What: Frisco Meal BUILD: Beef Burger COMMENT: Max is Europe’s oldest, and Sweden’s first burger chain. Max opened here with a lot of hype, and frankly it delivered. The burgers are tender, juicy and full of flavour. They taste different from other burger chains, possibly because the meat (according to the chain) is sans growth hormones and trans-fats. The French fries are hand-cut and extra crispy. RECOMMENDATION: Max tastes good and good for you as well. Instead of the French fries and soda you can have side salad and apple juice. Check out their dips as well. WHERE: Johnny Rockets What: The Houston BUILD: Beef Burger COMMENT: The embodiment of Americana, Johnny Rockets whips out burgers that are juicy though a tad under- seasoned – that’s why you need to make sure you have all your condiments up front to season it to taste. You can add sweet potato fries instead of regular fries.. RECOMMENDATION: The burgers are more expensive than most burger joints, but the entire diner experience makes the cost worthwhile. 3.54.5 By Diji Shujahi

  • 15. www. tempoplanet.com 15 make overmakeover fashion before Name: Sarah Bushra Age: 20 Nationality: Ethiopian Student at NYU Makeover: How do you describe your fashion style? Pretty laid back and nonchalant. Normally I wear casual clothes, usually a sweater and pants. I see fashion as a reflection of your personality, and a necessary expression of the individual. The Model After the Makeover... What do you think of the makeover? The experience was different; I didn’t know before how much time and energy goes into a photo shoot. It was very interesting to see that aspect first hand. Overall, the experience was nice and I appreciated the effort of the stylist and the makeup artist. What have you learned from this experience? To never put too much make up on my face… (laughs) I think a moderate amount is sufficient. It was nice to have makeup on for a while. Tanya [the hair/makeup stylist] did a good job even though this makeover made me realize that I will always stay true to my simple style on a day to day basis. Maybe I can do this for special occasions. What would be your fashion advice to others? Do whatever you like, but always be open to experimenting with new things, and eventually choose the one you think is the best for you! Tell us how you felt when you were being made over? At first I felt uncomfortable because I am not used to wearing high heels… and makeup sometimes makes my face feel itchy. But afterwards I thought the process was enjoyable. What would your friends and family say about your new look? I think my family back home in Ethiopia would hate it because they are very conservative. But I think my friends here would appreciate the ‘new look’. How did you feel wearing a shorter dress? I would feel uncomfortable wearing this outside, because I always show respect to the Emirati culture. Otherwise I still feel very much myself with the new look, which is good thing. after When Sarah Bushra, a visual arts major from New York University – Abu Dhabi, was asked by her friend, Yuhui, a psychology major, also studying in the same university, to be her model for a makeover feature for Tempo, Sarah was nervous and unsure. However later on, she decided to take the plunge and do the complete fashion makeover. Here are the results, with Yuhui Dai as fashion stylist, and her friend, Tanya Sukkar as make up & hair stylist. < Roshan John Kalarickal
  • 16. www. tempoplanet.com16 QIAS OMAR Qias Omar embraced YouTube from the outset. The young Afghani- American from California has been making YouTube videos since late 2007 is someone I’ve also been a long time fan of. Qias mainly creates comedy sketches, parodies, and pranks. As a child Qias would make comedic videos, whether they were home videos or videos posted on MySpace, so when YouTube launched Qias jumped on board, posting his videos. Qias made Middle Eastern and Asian sketches with cultural refences that young Middle Eastern Americans and Asian Americans living in the US identified with. He features cultural traditions in comedy sketches that break down stereotypes. His first video “Afghan Fight For Dinner Bill!!” is an example. His fans love his videos for their originality and humour. Aside from Middle Eastern and Asian videos, Qias has made funny sketches and parodies of trends and music. His parody of Maroon 5’s song ‘Payphone’ and his take on ‘The Harlem Shake’ both have over a million hits. He’s also done a couple of interesting prank videos, like the “Shopping Cart Prank.” He also has the Thirsty Guy Prank where he demonstrates how two girls, one wearing hijab, and another wearing short pants, are perceived, and treated differently. Qias’s fan-base has grown a lot over the years, and he now has over 70,000 subscribers. He’s travelled to different events around the US and Canada, where he met his fans and performed for them. A skilled actor, Qias has a knack for comedy and timing. He also uses his platform as a positive message to inspire young people to follow their dreams, do what they love, and to persevere. HOBBIE STUART No one’s YouTube star as a singer is shining bright quite like that of Roberto Stuart da Cunha Lima, professionally known as Hobbie Stuart. Hobbie is a singer and songwriter from Brighton, England who joined YouTube in late 2010 and has been uploading covers of songs as well as original songs ever since. With the help of his friend Alex Wells, he’s able to put his own unique twist on all his videos. Hobbie knows how to play the guitar and had a fair amount of experience in music, doing shows around his hometown. But it wasn’t until the day Hobbie joined YouTube that he decided to pursue music as a career, and from that moment on grabbed the attention of hundreds of thousands of viewers from around the world. Hobbie has over 160,000 subscribers and has millions of hits in six of his videos. His cover of Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’ alone has over five million views! Some of his original songs like ‘July Rain’ have garnered critical acclaim, while ‘How We Lived’ is a great example of Hobbie’s talent not only in singing, but also in songwriting. Hobbie’s fans have been supportive of his YouTube channel, and his approach to music - from vocals, to song choice, to the way he makes each song his own. JORDAN MARON Jordan Maron, a famous YouTuber from California, has been making a name for himself on YouTube as ‘CaptainSparklez’ for quite some time. In 2010 he opened a second channel under the name CaptainSparklez, to differentiate it from the explicit- language format of the first channel. Jordan Maron is a gameplay commentator on YouTube and also comments on ‘Trials Evolution’, ‘Happy Wheels’, and ‘Portal’. He is also known for his parodies of popular songs, changing lyrics to fit the Minecraft world. It wasn’t until his senior year, that he began to make ‘Call Of Duty’ gameplay videos. Jordan was also given the opportunity to be a director at Machinima (every gamer’s dream) and then partnering with the company and uploading content more frequently. Now a fulltime YouTuber, Jordan is a Lets Player with two video postings a day. At last count he has over seven million subscribers and his channel is the fifth solo-gaming channel to reach one billion views. His parody videos like ‘TNT’, ‘Revenge’, ‘Kingdom’, ‘Minecraft Style’ and ‘Take Back The Night’ all have views of between 20 million to 120 million hits. Jordan has not only made a significant contribution to YouTube, but also to the gaming community. YouTube was created in February 2005 by three guys, Steven Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, and is now the third most popular site on the internet, after Facebook and Google. For most of us YouTube is the first place to find a video, while for a talented and creative segment of YouTubers, it has become a place of countless opportunity. YouTubers are transforming the face of entertainment, business, news, music and more. Tempo’s Mirriam and Shaheer Akbar reviewed top YouTubers who are making an impact. Videos poured in from around the world, and Abu Dhabi’s submission – uploaded by Omar Haseeb, a 27 year old Sudanese from Abu Dhabi, on 16 March 2014 Credits & Links: www.youtube.com/QiasOmar Twitter.com/QiasOmar www.youtube.com/HobbieStuartMusic Twitter.com/HobbieStuart www.youtube.com/CaptainSparklez Twitter.com/CaptainSparklez Mirriam Akbar www.inmirzwords.wordpress.com Shaheer Akbar www.youtube.com/ShaheerTV – not only got selected as one of top videos but had already clocked 190,000 views as Tempo went to print! Omar stopped by Tempo to share his experience… Tempo: What was the idea behind your video for 24 Hours of Happy? Pharrell Williams encouraged people from different parts of the world to upload their own version of his single “Happy” so he can choose the best ones and add them to his longest worldwide music video (24hours), which was uploaded in www.24hoursofhappiness.com. I wanted to change negative stereotypes about the region, and Abu Dhabi in specific, by showing how happy Abu Dhabi people are. I’m happy my video was selected. It’s an impressive video, with over 40 different nationalities participating. How did you do it? It took four days in total to shoot, but this was over a period of a few weeks. There was one day that we shot for 13 hours straight in different spots. Most of the people who participated in the video are actually my friends. And convincing the strangers in the street like the construction workers was an easy job for me. Before I started shooting, I planned not to be in the video so I can direct the video better, but everyone made it so easy and fun that I had to jump in and participate with them more than once. The number of views is amazing. Did you know that was going to happen? I was confident that the guys and I were going to produce a good video, but of course not 100,000 views in a week. What made the video was its originality as people were being themselves, and they were feeling the song and the happiness in it… plus we had this competitive spirit that our video should be chosen with the best videos in the world. Will you do more YouTube videos in future? Definitely! But it’s going to be a challenge, as people are expecting the next one to be as good as this one.

  • 19. www. tempoplanet.com 19 Many years ago a man called Abu Ras was the guardian of a souk. He was very gruesome and people were scared of him. He had a big head, a donkey’s leg and a lion’s paw. He hid from people because he was embarrassed by his ugliness. One day, as Abu Ras was watching the souk, he noticed a large brown falcon with a long nose taking a piece of barley. When Abu Ras followed the falcon all the way into the desert, the falcon slowly turned to Abu Ras, “What do you want from me?” Abu Ras and the Falcon Written by: Yasra Abduqader Hussein Al Masaabi Illustration by: Noora Abdulrahman Abdulla Abdulrahman Al Shaikh Abu Ras replied, “I want to know why you are taking the barley every day.” In reply the falcon said, “If you really want to know, meet me here in one month.” With a stern face, Abu Ras said, “I will, and if I am not convinced you are doing good, I will punish you.” After one month, Abu Ras went to the same place and was shocked to see a green desert with colorful flowers and birds singing magical songs. The desert even had a beautiful, sweet smell. Upon seeing this, he said to the falcon, “How did you do this?” The falcon replied, “These are from the barley seeds I took from the souk.” After that, Abu Ras sat with the falcon and told him how he felt about his ugliness. Then the falcon asked him to bring one barley seed to him the next day. The following day, Abu Ras brought a barley seed and the falcon dug a hole. The falcon asked Abu Ras to put the seed in the hole while saying “Bism Allah.” Suddenly, Abu Ras started to change and became very handsome. He thanked the falcon and went to the village, excited to show the people his beautiful face. When they saw him, they didn’t recognize him and were surprised by how handsome he was. After a few days, he got married and lived happily together with his bride. He never forgot what the falcon did for him, and they became best friends. ZAYED UNIVERSITY’S AL KHARAREF STORYTELLING CLUB was created to enrich the legacy of the Emirati storytelling tradition and contribute to the revival of this important cultural heritage within the United Arab Emirates. Last year, the Club in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation exhibited Story Mile a collection of 48 original fables and folktales, written by students from the Academic Bridge Program, illustrated by College of Arts and Creative Enterprises majors and translated by ZOWD volunteers into the language of its characters, Emirati dialect. The tales, which are soon to be published in a book, share not only the storytelling traditions of the Emirates, but have also introduced other key aspects of Emirati culture. These latest stories are creating new footprints in Emirati's storytelling folklore, while preserving and reintegrating 24 archetypical traditional characters researched by Master Storyteller Abdul Aziz Al Mussallam and designated by the Department of Culture, Heritage and Information as genuinely Emirati back into the cultural landscape. “Higher!” Maddy squealed as I pushed her in her favourite light green park swing. “Hold on tight!” I ordered cheerfully, thankful to be taking in the last of the warm Indian summer days. Maddy, adorably decked in pink overalls and glittery Barbie tennis shoes, had always been a pleasure to babysit. “This is fun!” Maddy cried out joyfully in her cute, high-pitched voice. “Push me higher!” I pushed her as high as I thought appropriate for a four year old girl, which wasn’t very high at all. Maddy whooped gleefully, and swung her legs back and forth in excitement. I watched a group of pre-teen boys begin a game of pick-up basketball on the cracked and crumbling court next to the woods. I then reread the park sign for the thousandth time since coming to the park as a little girl. ROBBERTON PARK OPEN FROM DAWN TO DUSK. Dusk approached much faster than in the hotter months. The leaves had lost their luster and were beginning to change from various shades of green to muted yellows, burnt oranges, bright reds, and dusty purples. It was a shame that there’s only a two week window when the colours reach their beautiful peak right before falling off mid-October. “Get me down, Emma,” Maddy commanded politely. “I don’t want to swing anymore.” I grabbed the swing’s chains and eased Maddy to a complete stop before she jumped off. “Ready for the slide again?” I asked playfully. “No,” Maddy replied with frown and a tinge of regret in her small voice. “No?” I prompted, over-animatedly feigning surprise. “Why not, Maddy?” Maddy looked at the boys playing basketball. Looking back at Maddy, I studied her serious, far-off gaze. It was unnerving to see Maddy’s demeanor change so suddenly from joyful to dreary. Then I noticed that Maddy wasn’t looking at the boys but beyond the basketball court and into the woods. “What are you looking at?” I inquired in a soft, crooning tone. Whatever it was, Maddy had been entranced. A few moments passed, and Maddy said nothing. I touched her shoulder, and I could feel her trembling beneath my hand. “Maddy, what’s the matter?” I pleaded gently. “There’s a man looking at me,” she said solemnly, her eyes still on the woods. I didn’t see a man, only the kids laughing and shoving one another on the court. “Hey, there’s no man looking at you,” I tried to comfort her as I removed a tennis shoe to empty the mulch that had wedged its way into my shoe. But her frightened eyes still bore into the woods. I took her cold hand in mine. “Maddy, sweetie, there’s no one there,” I coaxed her gently. Maddy stood silently, still clearly unsettled by what she thought she saw. Her eyes, still unwavering, became blurry with tears. I led her away by the hand toward the slide she had enjoyed just minutes before. Together, we climbed a climbing wall of mulch dust- covered, rubber black tires bound together by thick rope. I’m definitely getting too old for this, I thought, as my foot got caught in one of the smaller tires. I let go of Maddy’s hand to support myself, but Maddy snatched it back. I tried to continue my climb using one hand while I felt Maddy’s grip become tighter and tighter. We reached the wooden platform next to the slide and peered down the slide’s silver, metallic length swathed in mulch dust. I could see our reflection on the slide’s surface. The slide bore the same reflection as a mirror, making it impossibly hot and uncomfortable in the summer months. “Let’s slide!” I encouraged gleefully, yet Maddy’s little fingers still gripped my hand firmly. “I want to go home,” she said, urging me to obey her by tugging my hand and turning toward the sidewalk that led back to her house. Her eyes continued that far-away look into the same spot in the woods. “Just one time down the slide,” I pleaded, pulling her closer toward the slide’s edge. Every time I tried to distract her, Maddy’s eyes still wouldn’t budge from the woods. I began to think that maybe it was something that I did. No, it couldn’t be that—Maddy still held my hand in a death-grip, using me for comfort. I remembered how rabid my imagination ran as a child, chalking up this incident to nothing more than child-like imagination. Finally, I convinced Maddy to slide down by telling her that we could leave the park sooner if we used the slide instead of climbing back down the tires. Before Maddy changed her mind, I quickly searched for the cleanest spot to slide. The slide’s shiny reflection revealed an upside-down image of a young man wearing a dark gray T-shirt and black pants whose tall, lean body stood as straight as a rod. I couldn’t help but notice that the young man stared at me fiercely, his sharp, colourless eyes piercing me with extreme hostility. I blinked twice, unsure that I actually saw the menacing figure looking back at me. But he was there. For just a few seconds, I witnessed this unnerving image before it was gone, disappearing just as quickly as it had appeared. I looked in front of the slide and on both sides, but the young man had vanished instantly. There was no trace that he had ever been there. I was brought back from the disturbing reflection by Maddy’s quiet, troubled voice. “Can we go now?” “Yes,” I confirmed, wrapping my arms around myself to avoid the chill that now permeated the air. “Let’s go.” Watched By Lindsey Cox SCAN THE PAGE WITH POINTATME APP LISTEN TO THE STORY IN ARABIC AND ENGLISH FLASH FICTION IS A STYLE OF FICTIONAL LITERATURE CHARACTERIZED BY BREVITY; WITH THE STANDARD BEING A STORY OF UNDER 1000 WORDS. • 24. www. tempoplanet.com24 Tempo writer and award-winning poet, Paul D, sat down with photographer, Klara Urban, from the Czech Republic, to discuss her creative endeavors in the UAE. PAUL D: What made you decide to move to Dubai? Klara: I dream a lot, and Dubai seemed like a friendly environment to nourish that. PAUL D: When and how did you start dabbling in photography and graphic design? Klara: Some fifteen years ago my father gave me his Russian-made, Zenith TTL camera to play with and that was probably the beginning. I would run around the garden taking close ups of flowers, bugs, and, occasionally, used my little brother as a model. There was no dark room access so I had to save up lunch money, drop the film in the local drug store, and wait for two weeks for the images to be developed. With the arrival of digital age, I became the designated family photographer for all the gatherings, trips, and birthday celebrations. At that time, it was pretty annoying. Traveling made me realize visual arts was the true passion. Photography was the perfect way to capture things that my poor memory pushed away instantly. Flirting with graphic design came as a way of venting visually. At the moment I use Canon 60D, 5D, AE-1 SLR, and of course the iPhone. PAUL D: In the past couple of years you have developed somewhat of a cult following with your photography style. What would you attribute that to? Klara: ‘Cult following’ is an exaggeration, but I hope and believe there are a few lost souls who enjoy and look out for my work. Developing a photographic style is a never-ending process. I am a stubborn person and the idea of creating something for profit or to hit a number on Instagram doesn’t appeal to me at all. I just run around the globe with my camera for the love of craft. It has helped me to look at the world differently; approach people I would otherwise never have a chance to talk to, seek places nobody else would set foot in, and strive to polish my skills. Photography, art, and design are my passion and compromise is not an option. If the stuff I do becomes popular and sells that’s great. If not, I will still carry on taking pictures and sketching. PAUL D: I didn’t know you sketched; I would love to see some of your drawings. You’re also very visible on social media. Klara: Social media is one of the best things that ever happened to me. I would probably not even speak English if it weren’t for MySpace during its glory days. People don’t seem to realize the power Internet. Everybody now has a free platform that allows them to reach out to millions and if the idea is good it goes viral instantly. Of course not all gold sparkles and yes you require self- discipline, but the key part is that the kid with ideas and passion no longer has to wait for the old man in suit and tie to grant his approval. PAUL D: What is your favorite social media medium? Klara: I would probably choose Twitter as my number one medium simply because it made me read again and I have a space to ‘rumble’ during my insomniac nights. The challenge I face is to make peace with Instagram. Creating a profile felt like joining the enemy. It’s a brilliant idea with little to no aesthetic value. The square crops, filters, and Selfies drive me crazy sometimes. PAUL D: You have an exclusive line of custom-made phone covers coming out very soon. Tell me a little bit more about that. Klara: Yes, it is a UAE-inspired collection of graphic prints for iPhone 5 covers, and they will soon be available in select stores around Dubai. It is a start of a whole new chapter for me and I could not be more excited. Dubai and all of the UAE is an infinite pool of inspiration; the diverse environment, architecture and cultural mix are one of a kind, and I itch to capture all that in my work. PAUL D: What do you most enjoy taking pictures of: people, city life, natural scenery? Klara: Most definitely people. When I was studying in New York, my final presentation consisted of close up portraits of New Yorkers. It took about three weeks of running around the city with camera, approaching strangers and asking them to pose for a photograph. The stories I heard would be enough material for a book. City life would be second in line. The life within concrete jungles is so dynamic and filled with contrast, but photography has the power to pin point the details, bring out emotions and capture stories. Paul D: Last question. What do you enjoy most, paying for the bill or having it paid for? Klara: Blank stare ART THROUGH A LENS articulate cafe gallery klara images from klaras collection
  • 25. www. tempoplanet.com 25 Maya Takahashi: This was undoubtedly the best night of my life. It was an incredible opportunity to sing with the Rolling Stones. It was truly amazing and definitely something that I will remember for the rest of my life! Charlie Day: This was the best experience I'll ever have - and for such old dudes they can rock hard! Stepping out in front of 40,000 people was exhilarating, scary and magical all rolled into one. I can't quite be- lieve it really happened - I'm still wearing my 'stage access' wristband. Jade Oswald: It was without a doubt the most incredible experience of my life! It was absolutely mind blowing that we were given the opportunity to sing with legends at such a brilliant venue! The whole experience from meeting the stars, to rehearsing and performing such a fantastic song, and to simply meeting other singing-lovers all helped to make the whole experience so magical! Lauren Jones: "I am still not able to comprehend just how amazing an experience it was to sing with The Rolling Stones and how lucky I am to have been able to do it. If only they had turned around, told us that we were the best choir they had ever sang with, and decided to take us on tour with them, then I could relive the coolest night of my life again and again" Alex High: It's not every day you get to sing in front of 40,000 people alongside a legendary rock band with a combined age of around 260 years! Standing on that stage was the most exhilarating experience I've ever felt. To tell the truth I was insanely anxious before we got called up behind the stage, but as soon as I stepped out into the bright lights and saw the ecstatic audience all my nerves disappeared and were replaced by an enormous smile! Joe Frost: ‘Mick Jagger and Keith Richards I recalled gave us a hearty welcome and commended us for reacting normally to their presence as opposed to screaming! After all it’s not every day you get to stand next to Keith Richards! They put the roll in the rock on Friday night and with a collective age of over 250 years they gave it their all just like they did back in 1962. They are truly rockin’ their lives away and I am so proud that I got to share a piece of the limelight with them, hail hail Rock ‘n’ Roll!!’ Alex High: ‘It’s not every day that you get to perform with the greatest rock band in history, in front of 40,000 people, but the day it hap- pened for me was by far the best day of my life!’ Alaw Henderson: ‘The experience was absolutely breath taking, noth- ing will ever beat this! Singing with such legends as the Rolling Stones has made my life complete! A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY STUDENTS FROM BSAK PERFORM WITH THE ROLLING STONES Friday February 21 was a very special day for a group of students from the British School Al Khubairat (BSAK). Nine students were chosen to sing live on stage with one of the most successful bands of all time, The Rolling Stones. The nine students were Alaw Henderson, Shanthi Tikari, Maya Takahashi, Charlie Day, Jade Oswald, Alex High, Joseph Frost, Emi Pell, Lauren Jones, as well as myself, Kate Denton and several other music teachers from Abu Dhabi. Rehearsals were taking place two weeks prior to the event but we were sworn to secrecy by the event organisers…this was a very difficult secret to keep! The concert was held at the impressive DU Arena in front of a crowd of over 40,000. The choir were in rehearsals with the band during the afternoon of the concert and we were all lucky enough to meet the front man, Mick Jagger as well as guitarists Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards. Our performance was reserved for the encore, which meant we were able to enjoy most of the concert watching from the very front row. We were taken back stage fifteen minutes before we were due to perform and handed our earpieces. The band completed their set with a fantastic rendition of Brown Sugar and the crowd went wild screaming for more. This was our cue to take to the stage. Desperately trying to settle our nerves, we climbed up the steps and took our places on stage. I am sure that everyone who took part will agree that the feeling of stepping out on stage in front of over 40,000 people is quite indescribable; looking out over the audience really was a sight to behold. The music began, and there we were, performing on stage with one of the greatest rock bands in history! An unforgettable experience! • 27. www. tempoplanet.com 27 When I left the US for Abu Dhabi nine years ago, I had my own business as did most of my friends. Entrepreneurship was becoming increasingly popular as something to talk about and for the media to cover. For more and more Americans, “having my own company” was becoming a goal for the future. After eight years in the UAE teaching entrepreneurship at universities but not being an entrepreneur myself, I’m back home once again running my own company. What has changed after the financial crisis of 2008-2009 is that more people are turning to entrepreneurship in response to unemployment or underemployment or to benefit directly from the accelerating economic development of Miami. Two weeks ago I attended the Miami Herald Business Plan Boot Camp along with 250 people of all ages hoping to become independent business owners. A few already have early stage companies. Most, however, are just beginning to plan their future company. The Business Plan Challenge for which the Boot Camp is a training session has been held the past 15 years, co-sponsored by Miami’s only daily newspaper and Florida International University (FIU). The Challenge has three categories: community, FIU students and alumni, and high school. Since I used to prepare business plans, I was eager to learn how they have evolved since 2005. Quite a bit as it turns out. The Challenge requires a 2-page narrative submission plus one page of graphics outlining financials. The plans I wrote were at least 15 pages with some as long as 30. At the Boot Camp the five experts who will judge the Business Plan Challenge discussed what makes the best entry. All are entrepreneurs – one is a billionaire – experienced in creating, growing, and selling companies. They agreed that no one is willing to read a long business plan. It has to capture interest in the first five minutes. The key parts of a good business plan are the Executive Summary, the Investor Deck, and the Revenue Projection. Investor Deck - a term I hadn’t heard earlier - includes concept, market, competition, required capital, and valuation. It used to take at least 10-15 pages to cover this ground. A bad business plan is unclear – “full of unnecessary words” – and doesn’t contain “a story I can understand.” The writer claims the concept is unique – “very few concepts are,” said one panelist. It contains confidential information about other companies that shouldn’t have been shared. A bad business plan isn’t realistic in accounting for how much money is needed to start and run for two years. Beyond two years projections “won’t be right because situations change.” The panelists emphasized that the plan has to express the entrepreneur’s personality. If he/she failed with a previous startup, that information should be included because investors consider failure a positive experience. If entrepreneurs are business beginners, they need experts as advisors to their company. Most of the audience seemed eager to go ahead with the Challenge and submit their plan by the April 5 deadline. Judges select the top three in each category; they are then asked to prepare a 90-second presentation for videotaping. The videos will be shown on the Miami Herald’s website. Readers will vote for the winners. Winning doesn’t bring prize money, but the publicity is worth it. Winners will be featured in Miami Herald’s special issue on May 19 and recognized at an awards luncheon two days later; FIU will host them at a reception in the fall. Amid the celebrations, winners will be hoping angel investors are paying attention. Theresa F. The survey, which was conducted in 32 countries, including the UAE, was released on International Women’s Day in March 2014. • 89% of female professionals around the globe believe building their “career capital” is key to success in the work place • 91% agree that the most successful employees will be those who can adapt to change in the work place • 71% think the number of women on boards will increase by 2020 • 70% think the number of women CEOs will increase by 2020 • 44% say their companies are preparing more women for senior management roles At recent events in the UAE and the US, the role of women on corporate and non- profit boards has been a hot topic. In Abu Dhabi, UAE last month AmCham Abu Dhabi’s Women in Business Committee and CBD NOW hosted an interactive seminar “Women on Board: How to Attract, Retain and Promote Women on Boards.” Two successful Emirati business women: Shaika Al Maskari and Fatima Al Jaber, who both run large corporations and sit on many boards, provided insights into their journies, noting that you have to be a pioneer. Fatima Al Jaber noted that there are only 15 female board members in companies listed on the Abu Dhabi Exchange and Dubai Financial Market, representing only 1.86% of board seats. Apart from being appointed to boards you can also run for election. Fatima is a pioneer in Abu Dhabi, as she became the first Emirati woman to be elected to the Board of Directors of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2010. In Austin, Texas, USA last month at South by Southwest (SXSW) conference a panel of female entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley also held a panel discussion about how to become board members of public companies. Silicon Valley is located in northern California and is home to many of the world’s largest technology companies and thousands of start-ups. According to a Gender Diversity Study nearly 50% of Silicon Valley’s top 150 companies have no female executives at all, while 84% of the S&P 500 manage to have at least one. When asked how women can get involved in a board, some of the panelists said one way is to start investing. Becoming an investor is a way to obtain a board seat of a company – if you write a check, ask for a board seat. If you are on the board of a start up, it will be more work initially as you will be asked to use your connections to get more investors. Once things are settled, you will be needed for strategic thinking. Regarding compensation, board members in early stage start-ups don’t get monetary compensation, but usually get an equity stake so you don’t receive a check. Typically public and major private companies give board members an equity stake equal to a Vice President with a shorter vesting period. Women often assume they are too busy with work, life and kids to join a board, so it is important to raise your hand and ask for board seat opportunities. While the number of seats on corporate boards is limited, there is ample opportunity to sit on boards of other companies, organizations and non-profit organizations. Getting on a non-profit board is a great way to gain experience and connections. Finding a cause you are passionate about and using the skill set you have to further the mission of the organization helps you to establish a track record of being a leader. I have served on school boards, non-profit boards, and company boards and always found it a learning experience. You have to keep your eye on the prize and do what is best for the organization and not for any particular constituency. And you should try to keep your emotions in check, especially when serving on a school board as parents’ passions can run high. My suggestion when trying to get the best people on a board is the three W rule: look for people to serve who bring Wealth, Wisdom or Work. And in the Middle East, it does not hurt to add a fourth: Wasta. Enhance your Career Capital: Join a Board! • 28. dhabi dames What Friends Do HATING GOODBYES Goodbyes are part of the expat movement of our city. People come and people go. They enjoy the good life here for a while and then they have to go back home. So are you telling me I must make new friends and start all over again?! So this is the little treatise I got up to write in the middle of the night; my way of saying thank you to all those friends: for all the memories, the laughter and the tears, not to mention, for all our doubts and all our fears. This is also a general thank you note to all the real friends out there, for just sticking up through trying times, for being there when the world looked weary and worn, for crying at the loss of a friend, for saying things would look up, even when things were really down. True and lasting friendship can’t be measured by the miles, but by the heart. Yes, you can Skype, Facebook, and stay in touch via email, but you shouldn’t forget the great bard’s words “Keep thy friend, under thy own life’s key.” Friends give you hard doses of good advice, even those that you may not want. They have the freedom to say ‘shaadupp’ when you rave and rant for too long. I have a dear friend who cries bitterly over the terrible things she sees on TV, and even gets hysterical until we tell her “Enough! Stop watching television!” Friends can yell at you like that, without mincing words. They can tell you to hurry up if they catch you dilly-dallying, and quit if you’re on the wrong path. They have the extreme freedom to tell you if you are getting too fat, terribly thin, have stains on your shirt, smudged up Why Friends Go? By Marien Oomen There is one thing I don’t like about living here: dealing with goodbyes. I don’t believe I can ever be convinced to change my mind, and this is my warning to newcomers to expect, you will make friends…really good friends, and then one day a lightening bolt will hit you, because it will be time to say goodbye. Last year my dear friend Robine went away to Capetown, Bijila went to Calgary, and then Anne went away to Cyprus, then Cindy went back to Boston, and now Angelique’s leaving. Good byes are always sad, and so are the farewell events. Songs have been sung, short speeches recited, and lyrics changed to suit the sad occasion. I remember one of my friends putting up a hard exterior at the farewell lunch, then crying her heart out like a bruised seven year old. TEEN ANGST - A teen’s point of view Three disturbing cases of teen suicide in the UAE were reported in the news recently, and all were deemed the result of stress and unresolved family matters. Tempo turned to a teen to get a teenager’s view. Manisha Manikuttan expresses her feelings, and in her own words… How many of you have done something you really didn’t want to do just to fit in with your friends? How many of you tried to cut yourself out of teen pressure? When in high school, everyone is just trying to fit in, if you don’t wear jeans or if you are not active in social networking sites like Facebook, you are considered as weird and not cool. I have seen many teens spending their parent’s hard-worked money lavishly on stylish clothes, new gadgets, drinks, drugs and whatnot just to become ‘cool’ and to impress their peers. The problem starts when one follows the slogan “come on, everybody’s doing it’.’ Curiosity makes youth try something. What matters to teens most is how they look in others’ eyes. Many of them spend a lot more time with their friends, and a whole lot less time with their parents, therefore they try to adopt what their friends do as a routine. But there are many who cannot afford “cool stuff,” so they feel dejected, lonely and are often isolated by peer groups. They get nervous attacks, burnouts, depressions and a few find “suicide” as the only solution to all their problems. Now tell me, is it worth risking my life, just to be cool? Another reason for the unrest among students is the out dated system of education and examination. Frankly speaking, in many parts of the world the system of education is rotten to the very core. I don’t think that examinations are the real tests of a student’s achievements. Students should be kept busy in creative, fruitful and social activities. Students think, “you don’t have to understand what you are taught, just be able to repeat the facts mentioned in textbooks in the exams to score good grades’’. This reminds me of a quote by Albert Einstein “learning facts is not education, but its ideas that matter’’. Today’s education is more job-oriented. Youth get frustrated when they see a great deal of disparity between the theory and its application. They wonder whether all that they have learnt would ever come into use. At school students often feel deprived, and stressed because of a need to strive for perfection, worry over grades, parental pressure, competition, tough class load and late night homework. During revision and exams, anxiety and stress are common problems for students, even for those who appear confident and calm. When students fail to fulfill the dreams and the high expectations of their parents and teachers, they feel a sense of loss. Unable to face the bitter realities of life, a small number may resort to violence and commit suicide. I think parents should be very careful while dealing with their children. They should give their children some space. Parents who continue to communicate with their teens, even when there are conflicts, actually maintain closer relationships. Being a teen I find solutions to all these problems is by choosing right friends. Friends who are positive, supportive and funny can reduce your stress to a great extent. Having a good group of friends will help us to maintain a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle. Remember that life is hard but you have to learn to deal with your problems instead of running away them. Got a problem? Attack it! By doing so you will turn out to be the real “hero” of your life. www. tempoplanet.com28 eye shadow, cheeks that are too pink, or lipstick’s that’s too bright. • 29. www. tempoplanet.com 29 Dr. DMS A doc from the Bronx doc in the house As a hospital worker, I see my fair share of weird stuff and I get a front row seat to all the insanity. For medical staff, this is “business as usual,” but I really wonder what it’s like for the others… such as the clerks, cleaning staff, interpreters, etc? Is it really normal for them to see the suffering of trauma, or death up close? It’s “normal” for me, but at the same time, it’s really not! What comes to mind is that I have seen my share of kids who have fallen out of buildings here, and it’s always awful. Certain faces and stories come to mind as just weird. A few years ago, a lady came to the hospital after she fell and struck her neck on the end of a metal pole. OUCH! All I could see was a decent sized “flesh wound”. While examining her, she tried to stifle a cough, and as she did so, a nice spray of blood and a flap of skin shot out from her neck, revealing a thumb sized hole! She had managed to give herself a “tracheotomy” (look it up) - great shot. Thankfully this was her only injury (when I say, “only” injury, I am in no way minimizing it) and she did well after surgery. A few weeks later, a driver was brought in after wrecking his car. His bloodied face was quite distorted, but he was talking and was making sense. During his evaluation he kept blowing his nose, but the blood-snot mix was blowing out of a hole in his forehead. Let’s be honest here…this is one of those things that when you see it, you can’t unsee it. To make matters worse, when we laid him down, it appeared that his face was sinking into his head. That’s exactly what I saw. Between his sinking face and his forehead “blowhole,” I promptly sat him up to minimize his chances of choking. This guy had basically smashed all the bones holding his face together. Luckily he was spared any other significant injuries. Little do these folks know, that they are legends! In my world, where the truth is much stranger than fiction, these folks have managed to distinguish themselves in ways they had never imagined or intended. Personally and professionally I hope I never reach a point where nothing fazes me any more, because becoming shocked reminds me of my humanity. Did You See That?! HEALTHY FOODS, GOOD EATS! By Annie John Kalarickal March marked International Nutrition month. But while March is over, our commitment to healthy dietary habits as a lifestyle choice, should remain with us all our lives. We all know that nutrition is the study of food at work in our bodies. In fact nutrition is the building blocks of life. Good nutrition means getting the right amount of nutrients from healthy foods in the right combinations. Nutrition is at work during our entire life-cycle — from infancy to adolescence, adulthood to senior years — and it can be the antidote for many of today’s common problems, such as stress, pollution, sexual vitality, and disease prevention. A poor diet can have a serious impact on health, and rob you of your freedom. We need to be reminded every day, and every month, to make the right choices, and achieve the right balance of nutrients. ENJOY THE TASTE OF EATING RIGHT How can you enjoy the ‘taste of eating right’? Well, the first step toward healthier eating is to prepare and enjoy more meals at home. Restaurant meals may look attractive and appetizing, but they can be loaded with calories, contributing to poor weight control. They are high in saturated fats, sodium and sugar. Well-nourished and active children, grow, develop, and learn better. Good nutrition also helps ensures a healthy pregnancy and a successful breast-feeding experience. Healthy eating helps adults and seniors feel their best, become more productive, and lower their risk for a variety of conditions. The Healthy Plate This starts with choosing a small plate, and filling half of it with vegetables and fruits, including antioxidant-rich berries, leafy greens and dark orange vegetables. Be sure to opt for vegetables, such as asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and spinach, and steam for a quick, convenient and nutrient-rich base for your meal. Add a protein to your plate– consider seafood, skinless poultry, and lean meats, as well as meatless options, including reduced fat cheese, nuts and nut butters, seeds, beans and soy products, tofu and tempeh. To complete your meal, include a small portion of a whole- grain or a starchy vegetable to fill about a quarter of your plate. Consider options such as brown rice, barley, bulgur, corn, green peas, potatoes and winter squash. These foods are excellent sources of B-vitamins as well as dietary fiber. World oral health day was also celebrated in March, and the announcement was made that three out of four children were found to have dental caries. The relationship between food and dental caries is strong. A diet rich in sugar and starch increases the risk of tooth decay, especially those foods that are sticky, because they are more likely to remain on the surface of the teeth. Eat a nutritious and balanced diet that is rich in calcium and phosphorus, to help strengthen teeth development. Limiting snacks is essential, so be sure to avoid carbohydrates, candy, caramels and chips, as well as sweetened juices and soda drinks. utrition expert Experts say that a lack of portion control is one of the main reasons so many of us are overweight - with many of us eating way more than we should be. • 31. The UAE is rich with cultural diversity, and considerable talent. Perhaps one of the most unique individuals is the ‘human torch,’ Syrian Mohammed Khair, or MK, 26 years old, who is a fire performer! He is also as a university student reading environmental science, and a Redbull events promoter. Tempo learned quickly that MK is hot! Did you start by playing with fire? For me it was always about science, and it quickly became my passion. In fact I decided to major in environmental science to get a chance to conduct crazy science experiments. How did you learn to breath fire? I was trained by a professional fire breather, called Kimberly Brown. How did you come up with the crazy idea to learn? (Laughing) The idea came out of boredom… I was recalling how I burnt my face in a past accident, so that triggered an internal challenge that I set for myself to get over my fear by training myself to deal with fire… What did you use? Homemadeequipment(smilesdeviously). What did the experience feel like? It felt amazing, freeing and crazy; nobody had done a stunt like that in the UAE before. Did you get injured? I got second degree burns on my left arm… another time I accidently burned some of my facial hair while performing. You call yourself the Human Torch, why? After The Human Torch - the super-hero from the movie ‘The Fantastic Four’. What are the dangers of fire performances? You perform in front of a huge crowd so it is extremely important to keep a safe distance. At one event there was a stupid drunk who took my fire tools and set a blaze to impress the girls. It could have been very dangerous but I jumped in to avert a disaster. Can you tell us the secret to fire breathing? Well for starters, you need guts, strong lungs, as well as mental and physical endurance. Stage fear is a definite no because you’ll definitely be performing in front of a big crowd. When you get nervous your breathing becomes unstable, so you need to be completely fit and confident. Most importantly you need to think fast on your feet in case of an emergency. Where can we see you perform? Outdoors events, parties, festivals in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. What would you advice someone who wants to try this experience? Don’t every try this unless a professional is supervising you. It might look cool and easy but it takes training and time.
