Tempo loves to discover talent in
the community. In this issue you
will meet the members of Muse
Majlis, five young 'muses' who have
a unique concept that combines
art, community and giving. Another trailblazer
is Lana Nasser, an ad executive who decided to
shift career gears and set up her own catering
business. In this issue we also have the pleasure
to introduce the Dhabi Dames, a spunky group
of opinionated expatriate women who come
together to learn, live and grow.
Abu Dhabi will be entertained in a big way
by the three day Motorbike Show which will
showcase biker paraphernalia of every form and
will also feature the talent of The Dream Players,
home grown performers with lots of talent
and drive.
The magazine is full of business and self
improvement features, as well as workshops.
The big one this month is the Tamakkan seminar
which is being held in collaboration with
Mubadala GE Capital, a free knowledge sharing
opportunity for all.
For technologists Tempo pushes the envelope
with a new bag of cool gimmicks that explore the
exciting conversion of digital content with print.
Engage with Tempo and our writers through

Dear Alma, Love your piece!! It was lovely
to have you at my party in Madrid! just a
note on your story about Granada, where I
also lived many years ago. The Generalife
gardens were not built by Christian kings,
but was the summer palace of the Nasrid

gardens were re designed as romantic

REVENGE WEARS
PRADA
by Lauren Weisberger
2013
It’s been ten years
since we’ve last
seen Andy Sachs
break away from
the holds of the
domineering
dragon lady
Miranda Priesley
in Paris, something
that no assistant
in Runway history
has ever done.
Now, Andy is running her own wedding
magazine with the help of Emily—yes,
the same Emily from the Runway days.
Since the end of her days at the fashion
magazine, Andy has managed to steadily
build an empire in which she flourished
with her best friend on her side and the
promise of a future with the most wanted
bachelor in up-scale New York society,
Max Harrison.
But when Andy finds a threatening
letter on her wedding day, she finds her
past colliding with her present. Miranda
Priesley—still as vicious as she’d been ten
years ago—slithers her way back into her
life and shatters all illusion of happiness
and calmness.
In the same time, Andy begins to doubt
her love to Max and keeps thinking
back to Alex, who had left her ten years
back and moved to another state, and to
another life.
Revenge Wears Prada is a true step-up
for Weisberger, whose prose has become
sharper and more mature with a hint
of ironic tone. It is a fun read for all
women out there who fell in love with
Andy Sachs and the loathsome Miranda
Priesley.
However, a fair warning must be
presented. Fans of the movie will not
completely understand the references
in the sequel of The Devil Wears
Prada because many key plotlines had
been transformed to suit Hollywood’s
standards and its iconic happily-ever-
after end. In that sense, readers must
be cautious to read the previous before
delving into this one.
WHAT DO YOU
KNOW ABOUT
AUTISM?
By Manar Al Hinai
About a year ago a number of my friends
did not know what Autism was. Some
thought it referred to a disease that
could be treated like the flu, while others
thought it was a disease that caused
people to be lonely.
Autism is a disorder of neural development identified by impaired social interaction,
verbal and non-verbal communications and repetitive behavior such as fluttering of
the arms. Usually a child can be identified of being autistic before the age of three, and
though there is no treatment, early detection helps reduce the severity of the symptoms
and hopefully helps the child integrate into the community.
A year and a half ago, I started volunteering at Abu Dhabi Autism Center in Al Mafraq
area. The Center has about 50 Emirati children, and I have loved every second of my
time spent there. The children are adorable and the management is very supportive
and welcoming of volunteers and those who want to support the children. In addition
to enhancing the children’s skills, the center also helps integrate the children into the
community, by enrolling them in government schools, and by providing them with
vocational training.
I personally believe that there is no better form of awareness than a visual one, and I
loved the recent awareness public service advertisement of the center which will be
played in VOX Marina Mall cinemas theaters prior to the movie, throughout the month
of September.
If you would like to know more about the center and want to volunteer when you have
the time, then check out their website www.zho.ae
Charlis Cunningham is a 28 year old American teacher who
has been writing poems since the age of five. She recently
recited for Tempo her poem ‘Our Roots Run Deep’ which is
about family, heritage and culture, as they are passed on from
one generation to another.
WORD ZONE:
POET CHARLIS CUNNINGHAM
OUR ROOTS RUN DEEP
Our roots run deep like the
mighty Mississippi flowing
from the Midwest
And out of the mouth of its
southern delta.
Our hearts sit on grandma's
porch filled with laughter on a
rainy day
And lives with the smell of
sweet peaches baked under
fresh, hand pressed dough.
Our roots run deep like coals in
the bottom of a barbeque pit
Lighting up backyard aromas
on the second Saturday of the
month.
Family recipes passed down
from aunt to niece, from
grandfather to son
And from mother to daughter
in a never ending cycle of
soulful meals.
Our roots run deep like great
monarchies of kings and
queens.
Just as the great Pharaoh built
his pyramid to withstand the
test of time,
We build our home to
be a symbol of strength,
intelligence, and love.
This family is a proud legacy of
our ancestors.
Our roots run deep like the
soul of a juke joint bluesman.
They groove to classic hits
cruising down the boulevard.
These roots of ours connect
us to a continent of hope and
faith.
Aunts, uncles, cousins,
mothers, fathers, brothers,
sisters, grandparents and
friends alike.
Our roots run deep like a fresh
January snow;
It runs deep like a baritone
voice moaning on Sunday
morning.
Our hearts meditate on bowed
knees and to the rhythm of old
spirituals.
Our roots run deep.

Travel photography captures an area’s
landscape, people, culture, customs, history
and architecture. In travel photography you
want to capture the feeling not only of place,
but of time.
Here are some tips to getting it right: choose
your perfect location, research local activities,
understand the customs and traditions of
the place, write down everything you like or
dislike, and last but not least, try to get lost
and explore as much as you can. build ideas
based on your research then start taking
pictures until you get what you imagined.

OF PHOTOGRAPHER:

TITLE: Ghosts of the Pantheon
LOCATION: The Pantheon, Rome, Italy
SETTING: Shutter Priority Mode
PURPOSE OF THE SHOT: “A combination
of three similar shots to achieve effect
of multiple presence of the same subject.
Already in my mind this was a black and
white photograph that would be achieved
later in post-production”
CAMERA MODEL: Canon EOS 400D
DIGITAL
F-STOP/APERTURE: f/3.5
ISO: 800
SHUTTER SPEED: 1/4 sec
TIP: The subject of the picture is more
important than the picture.
TITLE: Let the World Stop
LOCATION: Underground metro
Barcelona, Spain
SETTING: Shutter Priority Mode
PURPOSE OF THE SHOT: “I wanted to show
loneliness of the subject in a place full of
people. I tried to achieve this effect by using
a slow shutter speed to show the motion
around the subject.”
CAMERA MODEL: Canon EOS 400D
DIGITAL
F-STOP/APERTURE: f/3.5
ISO: 200
SHUTTER SPEED: 1/13 sec
TIP: If your pictures are not good enough,
you are not close enough (Robert Capa).
TITLE: Rainy Day in Rome
LOCATION: Streets of Rome, Italy
SETTING: Shutter Priority Mode
PURPOSE OF THE SHOT: “When I am in low light situations, with handheld camera, I like to
experiment with slow shutter speeds, which is a very interesting type of photography to try.
The important thing is to compose your shot against an interesting background then wait for
the subject to pass through the frame in the position you have in mind.”
CAMERA MODEL: Canon EOS 400D DIGITAL
F-STOP/APERTURE: f/3.5 | SHUTTER SPEED: 1/20 sec
ISO: 400
TIP: Don’t shoot what it looks like. Shoot what it feels like.
WHERE: BASKIN ROBBINS
WHAT: Pralines and Cream Caramel
Thick Shake
BUILD: Vanilla ice cream with praline-
coated pecan and caramel ribbon,
topped with whipped cream and
chocolate sauce.
COMMENT: Baskin Robbins has a
variety of milkshakes and they do not
disappoint. This drink was creamy
and full of texture; the crunch of the
pralines teased out the nuttiness of
the pecan giving it a smooth flavour.
One thing is guaranteed with Baskin
Robbins milkshakes – they may be
loaded with calories, but they sure
have a way of bringing a smile on your
face.
RECOMMENDATION: Try a topping
of waffles on your milkshakes for rich
texturing.
RATING: 5 stars
WHERE: BASKIN ROBBINS (yep we’re
doing two of BR, sorry other guys)
WHAT: Nutty Fudge Cream Cheese
Brownie Shake
BUILD: Chocolate fudge ice cream
swirled with cream cheese ribbons,
walnuts and brownie chunks;
deliciously accented with whipped
cream and chocolate sauce.
COMMENT: Ideal for chocolate lovers,
this shake not only gives you a yummy
chocolate drink but also doles out
chewy chocolate brownie chunks. As
if that’s not enough chocolate, cocoa
sauce is drizzled on the top melting
into the whipped cream to give a
marbled finish that feeds both the eyes
and the palate.
RECOMMENDATION: No one can
change ice cream into milkshakes quite
like Baskin Robbins; pure decadence all
the way.
RATING: 5 stars
WHERE: STARBUCKS
WHAT: Strawberries and Cream
Frappuccino (milkshakey enough to
qualify in this category)
BUILD: Fresh strawberries and cream
blended together and topped with
whipped cream.
COMMENT: This is one of Starbuck’s
signature summer drinks and is
quite famous for its 100 percent pure
strawberry syrup. The freshness of
milk combines nicely with the fruity
flavour and the thick cream. May not
be a gulp-it-down thirst quencher, but
still quite perfect for sipping in our
scorching summer heat.
RECOMMENDATION: Indulge
in Starbucks’ “discover your own
Frappuccino” experience which allows
you to dabble with toppings of coffee
and flavoured syrups.
RATING: 4 stars

SHAKE IT UP:
MILKSHAKE
HEAVEN
By Diji Shujahi
Once upon a time a milkshake was not the sweet, creamy drink that we know
today. It was an alcoholic drink famous for its eggnog-like consistency, and it
was used mainly as a tonic after dessert. Thankfully the milkshake has evolved
into an innocuous drink that is the go-to energy drink for kids and grownups
alike. Tempo decided to indulge in the milkshakes around town…
WHERE: COSTA
WHAT: Raspberry and White Chocolate Cooler
BUILD: Raspberry swirl with creamy white chocolate.
COMMENT: Unlike other milkshakes we tried out, this one did not come with whipped
cream topping, however the pungent smell of raspberries quickly helped us overcome
that initial disappointment. Although the raspberry was strong it was the white chocolate
and cream that dominated the flavour. This was a ‘cooler’ by name, and sure enough the
swirling crushed ice had a soothing effect on our senses.
RECOMMENDATION: Try Costa’s new camel milk drinks, which are said to be high in
nutrition and loaded with anti-ageing properties.
RATING: 3 stars
How does an advertising executive
make the transition to becoming a
successful restaurateur? We decided to
pop into Parti Perfect for pastries and
scrumptious pastries to meet 38 year
old owner Lana Nasser, and ask her
that question. We found the answer
right away: with great panache!
“I got a BS. in Mass Communication from
Boston University in 1996 and I spent six
years of copy writing experience at two
prominent UAE Advertising agencies. I left it
all behind to become a food writer. In 2002,
I joined the Institute of Culinary Education
(ICE); NYC’s largest and most highly acclaimed
center for culinary education both for career
training and recreational cooking.
FROM BOSTON TO ABU DHABI
“In 2004, it was my work at Chef Mark
Haley’s ‘Above and Beyond’ Catering
Company in Boston, where endless hours
of rolling, filling and making recipes for
thousands of hors d’oeuvres firmly rooted
my desire to have a catering kitchen of my
own some day. So when I moved back to Abu
Dhabi from Boston in 2008, I started catering
right out of the very kitchen I grew up in
with all its sounds and wonderful smells. In
2010, I developed Lana’s PartiPerfect Catering
Kitchen and it is in this kitchen, I also hope
to instill in my kids, their friends, and
hopefully lots of other kids in Abu Dhabi the
importance of respect towards good food and
healthy eating habits.
“You could say I did the majority of my
growing up in my mother’s kitchen. There
was always a dinner party or a special
occasion she was preparing for. I would
wake up to the clanking sounds of pots and
pans, the delectable and comforting smells of
freshly baked kaak and maamoul or roasted
turkey dinners during the holidays. ‘You can
help me by staying out of the kitchen’ was the
usual request, but over the years I earned the
position of resident chopper, peeler, and herb-
picker and then graduated to table décor and
assembler of serving platters. These childhood
memories must have left a profound impact
on me, because eventually, I ended up right
where I started, in the kitchen. If there is
one thing I took away with me from the
philosophy at ICE, and use it still as my secret
weapon, is that you create good food from
solid cooking techniques and not from recipes.
FINETUNING IN NYC
“I was able to perfect the art of sautéing,
blanching, poaching and trimming by
volunteering or as we know it ‘trailing’ 10 to
12 hours at various upscale restaurants, such
as ‘Annisa’ in NYC, under Chef Anita Lo (2001
Winner of Food & Wine’s ‘Best New Chef
in America’ Award). In the process, I fell in
love with cooking, handling fine ingredients,
planning menus and understanding the
meaning of professional service. I was
inspired by Chef Anita, who encouraged me
to allow my culture, background and passion
to seep into my style and approach towards
food.
“The first challenge I had would have to be
starting a business with children. My two
little boys at the time were barely two and
three years and being a very hands-on mom,
I had to be very skilled at multi-tasking.
The second challenge was learning how to
set policies and standards so that negative
experiences will not be repeated again.
The best way to do that was to be the cook,
driver, host, menu planner, client manager,
accountant and HR. Most of the time all
it took is a little trial and error and faith.
The last challenge was staying on task in a
tough industry, where tastes and needs are
so various and keeping everyone happy is
very difficult, but I believe if you treat your
customer right, the door will always be open
to more business.
MENU MORSELS
“On my menu today, you will find Middle
Eastern dishes with a twist such as, Eggplant
Fate Tortilla Tartlet, Mini Kibbe Tartlets,
Hindbeh on Pomme Paillasson or Mini Grape
Leaf Skewers wrapped in Lamb Tenderloin.
It’s also my curiosity for new flavors and
ingredients that keeps our menu fresh and
edgy. And even if it’s a new recipe that we
haven’t perfected yet, we will keep working
on it until it becomes one of our most popular
items on the menu. Our two most popular and
perfect examples are our Red Velvet Cake and
Sticky Date Pudding with Caramel Sauce.
“We are known to take our main dishes and
create smaller versions of them so clients
can try a variety of cuisines all in one go. I
enjoy experimenting with our Middle Eastern
cuisine and introducing new flavors and
methods to some of the more traditional
dishes. Chefs are like artists, they are as good
as their last creation so it’s important for them
to keep innovating and keeping the trends
fresh and exciting; food is like any product
that needs to be continuously revamped.
“I hope in the next five years to have a few
branches in the Middle East and later to
become a household name; I really want our
brand to explode on the food scene.”

Mississippi to be exact, but I consider Atlanta,
Georgia, home because I moved there when
I was four. I have been in the UAE for two
years now. I was at university when I first
began to take interest in photography, and
that is when I bought my first digital camera,
the Canon Powershot SD 700. I was a Canon
fan back in the day. That camera went
everywhere with me. It's kind of ironic now
because I'm a Nikon fan now. I guess we
evolve with age.
Paul D: You encouraged me to get a Canon
for my trip to South Africa last summer and
now you just up and switch brands on me?!
What was the catalyst that got you in to
photography? Was there a specific picture?
James: Since buying my first camera, I
developed an interest in traveling and taking
pictures. I can't say that it was a specific
picture that was the ‘catalyst’ but rather an
album of pictures I put together for my family
after my return from the Serengeti. I was
proud of that album and that's when I knew
my hobby had transformed into a passion.
Paul D: You do amazing work as the official
photographer for our Rooftop Rhythms
poetry show. What do you think stands out
about your pictures over an average picture
taken by someone else?
James: That's a major compliment and I
appreciate all the love Rooftop Rhythms
supporters show when the pictures are
displayed on Facebook. I go into every show
with the mindset that I'm going to capture
the atmosphere and mood of the show. It's
actually a great event to photograph because
the atmosphere is electric and people are
social and happy. Paul D, as the creator/MC of
Rooftop Rhythms, how is it that you succeed
in creating that electric atmosphere?
Paul D: I try to facilitate a unique cultural
experience through great location, music and
creative performance poetry. A diverse crowd
that is comfortable and feels appreciated
will also organically help to produce that
excitement you feel. How would you
recommend a young photography enthusiast
get started?
James: The best advice I could give would be
to have fun and be excited to learn new things
every time you pick up your camera. Don't
concern yourself with the quality of your
equipment or trying to get the perfect picture.
Sometimes the best pictures come from just
having fun.
Paul D: What is your favourite location in the
UAE to take pictures?
James: There are so many great places to take
pictures in the UAE, but if I had to pick my
favourite it would have to be Hatta, because
of its desert, mountains, and Bedouin villages.
There is culture, interesting people, and
scenery at every turn.
Paul D: Tell us more about JS Photography
and how you can be contacted.
James: JS Photography was never the
plan I envisioned. I just had a passion for
photography and love the art of capturing
the moment. My goal at every photo shoot
or event is to capture the look or atmosphere
while having a good time. You can see my
work at www.jamessimmonsphotography.com

THE DHABI
DAMES
AT HOME IN THE UAE:
THE DHABI DAMES
By Marien Oomen
An introduction by Marien to Dhabi Dames,
a delightful group of women who meet
regularly to discuss tackling daily problems
in a positive and proactive manner - with
a goal to becoming better, and happier,
mothers and wives…
“I personally have been living in this beautiful
city since 1998 and feel life is getting better
every passing year, because Abu Dhabi grows
on you. As a woman/ wife you find the first
two teething years difficult because you have
uprooted yourself from familiar grounds. In
contrast the man in your life finds his job
comfortably stable – he has a three bedroom
apartment, with maid, tax-free income, and
the glamour of living abroad. He feels he
has made it, while you -his wife - have to
find your own way, and, indeed - your own
happiness.
Where do you fit in? Do you feel you were
once a Woman of the Board Room and are
now Queen Maker of Salads, Chauffeur of
the Children, The Ironing Whiz Woman, The
Laundry Lady?
We’ve found that it typically takes two to
three years for an expat woman to get on solid
ground, to feel needed and to be recognized as
somebody. The newbies rush to join groups
that meet at coffee shops, hotels. They attend
every Poetry Reading, Book Club, and art
collector’s soirees, coffee mornings etc. Visits
to the souk, craft village, desert drives are all
drafted in. So when husband gets home in the
evening, he’s happy to see his exhausted but
chirpy wife. That’s goodness sufficient for the
day. On the flip side, if she is a highly social
butterfly, she will throw parties and before
the husband can say ‘Camel’, he is roped into
her social evenings.
Then there are those women who can’t afford
a maid, and quietly do all the housework,
the grocery shopping, help with their kids’
homework, and drive the children to and
from the after-school activities. They have
just about enough time to cook, clean up, and
watch TV for an hour before crashing into
bed. They lead a simple, no frills existence,
with a visit to Lulu becoming a weekend
outing for the whole family. The icing on the
cake would be a Chinese meal at an Indian
restaurant…
We dedicate Dhabi Dames to all of the women
out there who manage to find meaning in
everyday things.”
CULTURE:
SARI SWAG
By Angelique Goldsworthy
With Onam, ‘the harvest festival,
happening this September, South African
expatriate Angelique recalls her own
cultural immersion experience when she
decided to learn how to wear a “sari” to a
harvest festival event…
I was invited to an Onam event hosted by
the Kerala community at my husband's
company and decided to wear a sari to
immerse myself in the culture. My good
friend from Kerala offered me her Kerala
sari to wear, and so one evening I went
across to learn how to drape and fold the
beautiful garment. The two of us were
chatting so much that I never paid much
attention until my friend said, "Oh, you
look lovely! Do you want to try putting it on
yourself?" I glanced in the mirror and loved
the feminine silhouette I reflected there. I
felt so lovely with such little effort! I thought
I could easily replicate that myself, or so I
thought. I mean women had been doing it
for centuries, right? How difficult could it
be? Aah...
Well, the following morning when I tried to
put it on, I became entangled in oodles and
oodles of cream and gold fabric. It billowed
out in waves across the bed, over the floor,
out into the bathroom and back again. In the
wise words of Buzz Lightyear, 'To infinity
and beyond!' The sari had a life of its own!
I managed to untangle myself and escape.
In a panic, I left the house and ran across
Angelique in a sari

PARENTING 101
WHO SAYS PARENTING IS EASY?
By Avnita Bir
The arrival to the world of “King George”
the heir to the British throne, has thrust the
debate about ‘new parent syndrome’ into
the news as parents Prince William and
Kate Middleton grapple with the trials and
tribulations of ‘new parenthood’. Here is
insight from Avnita Bir, who offers insight
about ‘Parenting 101’…
Moments after the birth of my first born, I
felt a sense of relief - and euphoria. I thought
I had completed the toughest task of my
life. However, the euphoria did not last. I
realized there were no readymade solutions
for parenting; babies don’t come with manuals
or guidebooks. Each new day brought a fresh
set of problems that needed to be addressed,
and with each seemingly insurmountable
challenge I felt more inadequate.
My story is not that of any isolated parent.
It spans across age groups, cultures, and
countries. The issues are more or less uniform
and if one were to collate all of them, there
would be a common thread running through.
Issues range from your child spending all his
time on sports, to your daughter insisting on
sleepovers; to excessive time spent on social
networking and dealing with relationship
matters; to obsession with branded clothing
and gadgets; to school adjustment and
academic issues; to dealing with peer
pressure and balancing studies with a myriad
other distractions …the list is endless.
Every parent feels intimidated and often
helpless to deal with challenges. As a teacher/
principal/mentor I have interacted with
thousands of children, and have met many
parents. I realize that in the fast changing
climate that we currently live in the number
of challenges are increasing exponentially.
I often have to sit back and reflect rather
than jump to the most obvious and natural
response to a situation, and also revisit my
value system in order to align it to today’s
times.
Some principles are steadfast and
unchangeable through time: my advice to
parents is to remain connected with your
child at all times and follow your natural
parental instinct as ultimately, your intuition
can never go wrong. Feel the ‘pulse’ of your
child, and try to understand where he or
she is coming from. Children can be quite
communicative, and if you read the signs well
you will be able to differentiate a genuine
concern from a superficial matter. Handhold
your child when it is required, and give
your children the freedom they need, while
explaining that independence comes with
responsibility. Use meal times productively as
these, along with other family occasions, are
essential for bonding. And always, always, let
your child feel the comfort of not having to
face challenges alone.
In a nutshell: be firm, be kind, and be
consistent!
the road, in my petticoat and tiny little
bare-midriff top, to find the kindly Indian
nanny who worked for my neighbor. The
nanny answered the door and looked
quite taken aback when I asked her for
help. Quite indignant at my state of half
undress, she proclaimed, "I am not Indian,
I am Sri Lankan!" and then completely
refused to help me. I think I must have
committed some sort of cultural faux pas.
Had I not seen the dear woman wear a
kind of sari many times before? Just how
different could one sari be from another?
Perhaps I was not as keenly observant as
I thought. I felt like a complete cultural
idiot!
So, still confused and now running late,
we set off for the celebrations, me in my
undergarments trailing a sea of fabric in
my wake! As we neared the venue, my
husband phoned his Indian colleague who
sent out two smiling angels in saris, to
help me dress. I was swiftly ushered into
a dressing room, pulsating with vibrant
colours and sounds. Here the Indian
dancers and traditional drummers were
getting ready to perform. The three of
us squeezed into a tiny cubicle where my
new friends wrapped, pinned, tucked the
sari, and finally adorned my hair with
sweet-smelling Jasmine flowers. I felt like
a Bollywood princess. Applause sounded
as I entered the auditorium to take my
seat, red-faced and breathless, beside my
husband!
The Onam festivities included traditional
dancing and singing, a re-enactment of
the return of King Mahabali and a meal
of delicious vegetarian dishes served on
banana leaves. That day, I made some new
friends and also learnt a few important
lessons about culture and the importance
of paying attention! As a family we
thoroughly enjoyed a happy day, full of
feasting and dancing.

Abu Dhabi, UAE
Tempo came across a unique group of Emirati
girls who call themselves ‘The Muses’. The
five, who go only by their assumed identities,
launched Muse Majlis in Ramadan to inspire
community thinking and giving. The Muses
identify themselves as Muse 1 as the ‘The
Strong One,’ ‘Muse 2 as the‘The Flower in the
Teapot,’ Muse 3 as ‘The Light,’ Muse 4 as ‘The
Glue’ and Muse 5 as ‘The Old Soul. Tempo
attended the charity event they organized,
and was attended by over 300 guests who
came together to raise money for charity. The
event was exquisite in its uniqueness, but
what was more compelling to Tempo was the
creative thinking of the young ladies. Here’s
our chat with ‘The Muses’…
TEMPO: What is the Muse Concept?
MUSE 1: Basically we’re five girls that came
together, and we all have a mutual interest
and were pretty much connected in giving
back to society. We all contribute in different
ways which makes us special.
MUSE 5: In Greek mythology, muse
(pronounced Muze) were gods of inspiration.
There were muses of music, art, poetry.
Muses are usually depicted holding symbolic
items that depict what they represent. We
presented each muse as what they represent.
TEMPO: so what is the Muse Majlis?
Muse 2: We wanted to create a very informal
way for girls to gather together, and eat, play
games and socialize while still having an
intellectual concept.
MUSE 1: She created a world where girls could
have intellectual conversations.
MUSE 4: We wanted to have girls be inspired.
We wanted to break the barrier of thinking
“Oh yeah a girls majlis, it’s probably filled with
gossip.”
TEMPO: What are the goals or angles you
girls are coming from?
We’re coming from two different angles.
Muse 1 wanted to create a charity event
while I really wanted to create a platform to
support small to medium enterprises that are
local based, meaning that the businesses do
not have to be locally funded, but they just
have to be based here in the UAE. I wanted
to create a platform that would help them
expand, but not only growth expansion wise
but rather to grow with the entrepreneurial
spirit and think outside the box. Off course we
wouldn’t support these businesses financially
but rather give them spirit and guidelines.
TEMPO: How long did it take to plan all this?
And when did you ladies get the idea?
MUSE 3: There has been a lack of sleep in
all of this because we don’t sleep! We have
a whatsapp group we communicate through
always, and any free time we get with each
other, we’re always focusing and determined
to get it done. It’s sort of like a Ramadan
Miracle if you allow me to say it, we thought
of the idea 10 days ago and we wanted to
make it happen.
MUSE 1: We’re all so blessed and we’re young
but we want to take the little step now, and
just give back to society.
TEMPO: Why do the muses prefer to hide
the identities?
MUSE 1: The Muses choose not to reveal our
identities because we would like The Muse
Majlis to prosper and grow based on the
success of the events. Also, with charity it
is better not to reveal one’s identity and the
muses choose to do so. The muses are not
looking for fame even though most family
and friends know who the ladies are, they
prefer to sit backstage and run the show
discretely.
TEMPO: What kind of advice would you give
to much younger people?
MUSE 5: We would open our hearts and mind
to them. We want to inspire them by giving
pep talks and tell them to think of a different
idea because everyone should be innovative
in their own way.
MUSE 5: Your uniqueness sells.
MUSE 4: There are no rules for anything.
TEMPO: Your future events or plans?
MUSE 1: We want to give back to society
and stick to our vision. We’re going to have
seasonal events and continue to have them
within the majlis feel. The majlis is portable
and nomadic. We’re possibly thinking of
expanding in different countries which we
don’t want to disclose just yet.

YOUR CALL, YOUR BRAND:

FOCUSED MAGAZINE IN THE UAE, CALL: +971 2 491 8624
“Hey! Cnt wait 2 c u!! xx” says the text on my
phone ( the ‘smart’ BlackBerry Torch 9800).
That was from a friend I hadn’t met in years.
We were classmates till the eight grade, and
then she left for Bahrain. Facebook reunited
us and we became “friends” again. I hadn’t
seen her face to face, or spoken to her, until
she told me of her visit to Dubai and her
desire to see me! (Clear from the text she
sent me).
So, we met, after all these years. Face to face.
For lunch. At a mall in Dubai. After the first
few minutes of squealing “hi’s” and “how
are you’s,” the conversation came to a rather
unnatural stop – ‘unnatural’ because we’d
been talking on Facebook for sometime, but
when we actually saw each other face-to-face,
we didn’t know what to say to each other!
It made me think that this must be one of the
effects of technology on our generation. Us
teenagers don’t know how to talk face-to-
face anymore! Heck, kids don’t even know
how to spell and write properly, thanks to
autocorrect, text-shorthand, and keypads
for that. Most children don’t know their way
around their own city - because they’re too
busy cocooned on the internet in a car while
someone is driving, to pay attention to their
surroundings. Or it is because they don’t feel
the need to focus as they’re heavily dependent
on GPS to get around.
I’m a Gen Y kid and I too am technically
hooked to all these technologies. But I’m
starting to see the light! I’m fighting to not
get “hooked”. I am deliberately booking only
a set time with my gadgets, and that’s based
on necessity. Otherwise, I’m all for ‘old school
entertainment’ – newspapers, crosswords,
books, scrabble etc.
It wasn’t always like this for me, and I can’t
say that it’s been easy. I used to be glued
to Facebook, BBM, WhatsApp and all the
other stuff, but lately all that has lost its
charm. I realize how apathetic it made me
to my surroundings and how pathetic I was
becoming! I now believe that this whole
digital world has warped us all up in its big
net, and that everything from relationships
to thoughts, feelings and responses have
become so virtual that sometimes people don’t
know who someone “really” is anymore! It
also makes your physical world disappear
into oblivion, while your virtual world, with
faraway virtual avatars, seem more real.
Mindboggling, right?
Medically as well all this technology can’t be
good for our health. Imagine how we’re glued
to a phone, TV, laptop, tablet etc, all the time.
I read somewhere that if four mobiles are kept
in a circle and all four are called at the same
time, the radiation produced is sufficient to
pop corn kernels placed inside the circle. I’ve
also heard that using a laptop can decrease
fertility rates.
I’m not saying that the whole social media or
technological development should be rejected.
All I’m saying is that this obsession has to
be used with some limitation. Otherwise we
are headed for a future where our minds and
thinking capacities will be as restricted as that
of a machine. So pop that virtual bubble and
let’s all get real, folks!

BIOSHOCK DLC
The Background
Bioshock Infinite has found
a place in gaming history
(recent history that is) and
is considered one of the best
games this year. Of all time?
Well only time has that
answer.
But if you're a fan of the
franchise you have an
upcoming Downloadable
Content (DLC) to look
forward to! If you've
completed Infinite (and you
really should have by now)
then you know about the
time bending connection
between Rapture, the
undersea city in the first two
installments, and Columbia,
the airborne city of Infinite.
For the noobs, we discover
that the main characters in
both cities are essentially the
same character in a different
place and time. Name and dates may change, but the people remain
the same. It was a huge and brilliant twist that took us all by surprise.
THE DLC STORY
This story, called Burial At Sea, takes place in the city of Rapture
2 years before its eventual ruination (I love that word). With two
episodes, you play as Booker DeWitt in the first and his daughter
Elizabeth in the second. The details of the story are still unknown,
but my astute brilliance tells me we'll get some more holes filled
regarding the connection between the Columbia universe and the
one in Rapture.
As dimensional travel is now a central element in story, we'll no
doubt experience characters 'meeting themselves' and potential time/
space paradoxes (whatever those are).
While some folks are disappointed that we're going back to Rapture,
I'm stoked that we're going to see the city in its full glory - shiny, new
and going crazy.
DeWitt and Elizabeth's characters have been redesigned slightly for
this DLC. Elizabeth looks older and more voluptuous for some reason,
and at the time of writing, we didn't have an update on DeWitt's
makeover. Based on the released art, one gets the impression that
these are very different versions of the Infinite characters.
The release is to be announced. It'll cost about U$ 30 for both
episodes.

MEDIA
Ever since August 5 when Amazon’s Jeff
Bezos announced he was buying the
Washington Post, everyone I know and
everyone whose columns I read has been
talking about the deal.
Most reactions are negative which is
unfortunate; the news business should
be on the cutting edge of all kinds of
progress, but too many journalists distrust
new techniques and new media.
Like me, some of my friends are
former journalists, and they tend to be
pessimistic about what will happen to
the Post, one of America’s best and best-
known newspapers. Like all American
newspapers – except for the Wall Street
Journal – the new era of free digital news
on newspaper websites has been tough
on the Washington Post or WaPo as it’s
known to news junkies.
One of the surprising things about former
journalists and even some still covering
news is how conservative they are - not
politically, but in the way they work.
They’ve resisted new media from the
beginning; they distrust the opportunities
the digital age offers for using a multitude
of sources and telling a story in different
ways to exploit the possibilities of video,
audio, still photography, and internet
links.
So for them the acquisition of WaPo by
Bezos means the end of news as they
know it. They reacted the same way
when Rupert Murdoch bought the Wall
Street Journal at the beginning of August
six years ago. The only motive they can
attribute to Murdoch and Bezos is a desire
to control news and the editorial process.
We don’t know what Bezos will do,
but we already know that Murdoch
has invested funds in the Journal’s
newsgathering and left the editorial team
alone. I think it’s likely that Bezos too
didn’t buy WaPo to control editorials or
direct how the news is gathered because
there’s no money in that.
Behind both purchases of major
newspaper titles by billionaires is the
desire to unlock new sources of revenue
in traditional media. Murdoch has been
buying media titles in Australia, the UK,
and here for years. Interestingly, his
papers represent a variety of different
types and were taken in different
directions. It would have been hard
to predict what would happen to each
acquisition based on the previous one.
Unlike Murdoch, Bezos has no track
record with newspapers; like Murdoch
he knows how to make money. He has
developed Amazon from zero to a game
changer that controls sales of books and
many other products around the world.
Although he’s never owned a paper
before, he bought WaPo for $250 million,
an amount most of us can’t imagine which
for a billionaire is practically chump
change.
Being an optimist about the opportunities
that new media offers for journalism
today and will create in the future, I have
hopes that Bezos will figure out how to
make WaPo much more profitable that it
has been over the past ten years.
The man who learned how to satisfy
customers after Amazon had huge
difficulties fulfilling orders in the early
days may be able to come up with a new
way to make journalism profitable.
If there is a way to finance news media at
a time when print advertising is declining
and revenues from digital advertising are
nowhere near what print advertising used
to bring in, I think Jeff Bezos can find it.
And that will make all of us news junkies
very happy.

“Work hard, play hard” is a saying that
many people use, but the truth is that
only a few people can keep up the pace
in both pursuits. ‘Work-life balance’ is
now part of the business lexicon but it
should be considered as more than just a
phrase. The simple fact is that managers,
executives and employees all perform
better when they can balance their work
life with their personal life.
As a business owner, you have a
responsibility to not only take care of your
employees but also to look after yourself.
It is natural that you will put long and
irregular hours into your business; but
it is critical for your work efficiency and
health to ensure you spend time away
from the business to relax and refresh
your mind and body.
The same goes for your employees. As a
manager, you should establish a culture
that encourages a work-life balance for
your staff. Of course it is important for
them to work diligently, but that doesn’t
mean chaining them to their desk for
12 hours a day. Tired and disgruntled
workers do not perform effectively so it
makes simple business sense to ensure
they are energized and invigorated
–productivity is improved, better decisions
are made and employees are happier.

BALANCING ACT:
TAKE TIME TO CHILL
www. tempoplanet.com 27
TIPS FOR IMPROVING WORK-LIFE
BALANCE:
Allow staff extra time-off for•
genuine family situations without
making them feel guilty
Ensure staff take regular breaks•
during the day, even for 10 minutes
each time – this is when they can
make important personal phone calls
Create a culture of ‘work smarter,•
not harder’ – long hours don’t
always mean high productivity
Organize social activities that•
include the families of employees
Introduce additional staff•
benefits such as subsidized gym
memberships or dance classes
Provide small random awards for•
good work, such as cinema tickets or
dinner vouchers, to encourage staff
to go out
If staff work longer hours on an•
urgent project, give them extra time-
off the next day
Be flexible around essential personal•
issues that can only be done
during the day – negotiate with the
employee on how they will make up
the time
Allow employees to work from home•
if they need to do unforseen family
duties like babysitting

WOMEN IN BUSINESS:
With summer vacation over and offices
fully staffed again, September is a great
month to focus on becoming a better
boss. Many women in management feel
they have to outperform their male
counterparts just to be considered as
equally talented. Instead of working
harder to outperform someone, try
working differently. As conventional
wisdom often results in mediocrity, I
have found that the best bosses do the
opposite of what an average boss does.
Here are some unconventional tips to
being a great boss.
1. PUT THE CUSTOMER SECOND,
AND EMPLOYEES FIRST.
Many managers use the common axiom,
“put the customer first.” But by doing so,
they can overlook the people who are
responsible for developing the customer
experience – their employees. Customers
and clients can immediately sense when
employees are miserable, overworked, or
under trained. Great bosses concentrate
on making certain that their employees
are happy, healthy and trained properly
so they can do the work.
2. DON’T USE FEAR AS A
MANAGEMENT TOOL.
Fear is the bad manager’s favourite
emotion. Why? Because it works. But
remember it works in the same way
crash-dieting works: you can lose five
pounds in a week by starving yourself,
but it is not sustainable. Managers who
operate through implied or obvious
threats will get what they want – but the
best people will leave as quickly as they
can find a way out. When employees are
worrying about whether they will be
fired, criticized or humiliated, their brains
are in survival mode, just to get through
the day. Great bosses know that creativity
and innovation are essential to success.
They don't use fear as a management tool,
instead they focus on positive emotions
that bring out optimism, hope and
confidence in their teams.
3. HIRE PEOPLE SMARTER THAN YOU.
Average bosses like to be the smartest
person in the room. They think it is their
job to know all the answers and give
them to their employees. But by acting
this way, they deprive their employees
of the opportunity to grow and think on
their own, which is essential for solving
problems. They end up hiring people
who keep the status quo rather than
improve the organization. Great bosses
hire smart people because they don’t
limit themselves to their job descriptions.
Smart people go above and beyond the
call of duty as they realize their most
important job is to help the company
expand. Great bosses don’t need to have
all the answers; they just need a team of
smart people.
4. MEASURE YOURSELF BY YOUR
WORST EMPLOYEES.
Bosses like to point to their top
performers as a sign of how successful
they are as managers. However, the
success of a top performer is often a
reflection of that person's drive and
ability, not just what the manager did.
Great bosses know that the real measure
of a manager's skill is how he or she
handles the poor performers. Your worst
performers illustrate exactly what you,
as a manager, are willing to tolerate.
Providing proper training and goal setting
will help improve poor performers. If
performance does not improve, then it is
time to let them go.
5. FOCUS ON FUTURE TRENDS NOT
PAST FINANCIAL REPORTS.
Many bosses use monthly or annual
financial reports to prove they are
good managers. While that is useful
management tool for financial purposes,
it is important to remember that these
reports represent the history of what has
happened. Focusing on them is like trying
to drive a car while looking in the rear-
view mirror.
Great bosses know that the only way to
get good financial figures in the future is
to focus on what is currently happening
in the business and industry. Concentrate
on getting your employees to stay
abreast of current and future trends. By
putting your employees first, fostering
innovation, hiring people smarter than
you, improving your worst performers
and focusing on the future, you are on
your way to becoming a great boss.

GROW A GREENER HOME
With so much pressure on our time – with kids to get to school, work
to be done, dinner to be cooked, it can become exhausting hearing
about the things that we need to do to make our homes and offices
‘greener’. Yes, every little thing counts, but how long does it take to
do those little things every week?
Wouldn’t it be so much easier if the easy things at home were simple
and didn’t take up your time?
There are a few examples below, but these are by no means an
exhaustive list. It would be great to hear your own suggestions on
The Planetarians Facebook page or on Twitter.
REPLACING LIGHT BULBS1. – If your house is anything like
mine, a lightbulb seems to blow at least once a week. Instead of
buying a bulk pack of your standard incandescent light bulbs
next time you are at the supermarket, but a pack of CFLs – or
the twisty bulb ones as I like to call them! They are much more
energy efficient, and last longer, reducing your waste, and the
number of times you have to go up the ladder!
USE GREEN CLEANING PRODUCTS2. – available in most
supermarkets, brands like Ecover are kind to your home, as
well as kind to the environment, helping you to have a cleaner,
greener home!
INDOOR PLANTS3. – not necessarily helping you to reduce the
energy that you consume, but indoor plants aid oxygenation,
help reduce chemicals in the air, and even help you to focus
more – meaning you can work for less time!
TURN DOWN YOU’RE A/C AND FRIDGE SETTINGS4. – Its
something that we have mentioned before, and in a country
where we all revel in being able to walk into a nice chilled
building after being outside in the heat, it is all the more critical.
Even just keeping the temperature at 24 degrees, as DEWA
suggests, will help reduce your impact on the environment.
Most of our energy usage comes from heating and cooling, so
it is the smallest turn of the dial that may make the biggest
impact.
These are just four things that I personally have been trying to do
around my own home. Although I am in a constant battle with my
A/C temperature controls! If you have any suggestions as to what
you have been doing in your own home, I would love to hear them
and share them online. Find The Planetarians on Facebook, or
Twitter at the links below.

YOUR CALL, YOUR BRAND:
TO ADVERTISE IN THE WIDEST CIRCULATED
YOUTH AND COMMUNITY FOCUSED MAGAZINE
IN THE UAE, CALL: +971 2 491 8624
Aries: You will be particularly active this month, but you can set
aside the evening hour for enjoyment and actions you love. Family
members and interests are an aspect of your pleasure techniques.
Activities are the perfect boost for you during the first aspect of
this and you may need to take additional proper excellent care of
your health. Do not twist your muscles!
Taurus: This month is ideal for you to be outside with kids and
buddies. You can be an individual in the activities or just a viewer
- the option is yours. Try to maintain a positive attitude so that it
stimulates innovative mood.
Gemini: This is a perfect time for being kind to those you love. You
might just get a chance to become better acquainted with friends
from far away. Get organized and complete those family jobs that
you have saved up for the winter time.
Cancer: Romance and connections can come into the highlight this
month. If you are in a dedicated connection then there is a chance
to expand your connection. There is a large motivation to improve
your income. Prevent sensitive topics as you might want to keep
your ideas to yourself and talk only when requested.
Leo: You will need to be on the go constantly shifting here and
there and scrambling around. You need to understand personal
effective time control during this month. You might have benefits
but if you do not preserve and you just constantly invest, you will
reduce what you have created.
Virgo: Use this month to create a strategy for the relaxation of the
season. Write down objectives and then work on how to get these
objectives achieved. You and your loved one will be on the same
wave length and it will be amazing to plan a lovely evening for
both of you to catch up on the everyday activities in your lifestyles.
Libra: You will get powerful relaxation this month. You will see a
development of your earnings by the mid of this month. Ensure
that you consider all choices and ask for views and ideas. The last
week of the month will see your financial situation increasing and
you will be able to shift through Sept with significant quantities of
pleasure.
Scorpio: Your relationship is extremely highlighted and buddies
may become almost too important. This impact provides you with
possibilities, for dealing with buddies and to add new individuals.
It is a fun chance to mingle with likeminded individuals and get
engaged in group matters. Your energy will be high for your
profession, but do take a chance to sleep.
Sagittarius: Family connections are very important during this
month. Get your near relatives or members to help you around the
home. Don't loan cash if you feel that you can't manage it. You will
be extremely compensated for all your time and effort in the place
of work. Set aside nights for your loved ones.
Capricorn: You will discover new connections that are easy to deal
with. You will have to set time for both your profession and family.
The end of the month will be fun but extremely complicated and
there will be difficulties that you must manage.
Aquarius: Everyone is going to look at you and they will be
impressed by your excellent looks. There will be benefits and
recognitions that come your way. This month is going to be
extremely fulfilling and you will achieve more than you wish for.
Pisces: Work is going to be very quick during this month. You
might discover that there is excellent pressure in your workplace.
Do plan a long holiday or few short ones this month.

…I s’pose when ye’ve spent most of yer life ‘behaving yerself’
at home, at school, in nice company… when the opportunity
presents itself to kick over the traces, and… well… go nuts,
really… in a way that actually doesn’t hurt emb’dy… who can
resist?… one of the joys of being a novelist is ye can dispose
of people… make them go away, permanently… ceasing to
breathe… inventive methods of elimination are restricted
only by yer imagination… in the olden days of
gangster-type novels a favoured go-away-and-don’t-
come-back stunt was being part of the ingredients
in a cement-mixer cake… if we’re to believe it all,
most of the buildings in inner city America
have Deceased-Three-Finger-Freddie-type
fossilised foundations… the bluudthursty
hunger that settles so comfortably into
the crime thriller scribbler’s quiver is
startling… at the last count, in two and a
half novels, I’ve killed off more people
than the Bubonic Plague accounted
for in the mid-1600's… and it all seems
so pleasurable… if this were ‘real-life’…
where with a whirl of my
whim, lethal licence
were granted to me…
stand back and watch
the devastation… first up
are the people who install those
infernal robo-answering machines
in companies, taking twenty minutes
of your runaround time to get back to, ‘…if ye’re
still here, press ’1' again, yer call is important to
us…’ next rub-out candidates are the Loonies in
the Supermarkets… ye know the ones… ye’ve got
yer two, maximum three items ready and ye make
a beeline for the till checkout lady at the end
exit row… ye can’t miss it… above it, hangs
a billboard-size notice in wurds that even Blind Pugh could
read, ‘ten items or less—and cash only’… the bloke in front
starts to empty his lot onto the sliding conveyor thingy… the
checkout lady starts to ring up the items,…Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching!
Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching!... when the Ka-Ching! Kount reaches
fifteen items, his hand-basket resembles a conjurer’s box…
items keep appearing… my Govan Docklands sense of
right and wrong can’t be contained… I ask the fellow
in disgust… ‘so, which is it?… ye can’t read?... or ye
can’t count?’… he stiffens up, spreads his hands and
says (get this!), ‘well, ye know, I’m in a hurry’…
this is when the fight usually starts… to
the unrestrained delight of the rest of the
10-or-less brigade in the queue behind
me, I launch into one of my tirades, ‘Oh,
ye’re in hurry? well that’s okay, coz I’ve
got my whole life to wait here at the FAST
checkout queue, waiting to teach numpties
like you how to read and count’… fluster,
fluster, from Mister Can’t-Read-Or-Count…
he makes to pay… with a credit card... he
hasn’t a red cent on him!…
of course, the card limit
has long been exhausted
and gets rejected… ye get
the idea… the late Ian Fleming,
he who gave us the ageless Jimmy
Bond, Dubble-Oh-Slur, used to mark
a wee pencil cross on every tenth page
of his manuscripts… this told him it was time
for another blow-’em-to-hell-or-somewhere bit
of action… I sense my manuscripts may have
more crosses than a tic-tac-toe convention…
I’m thinking of calling Crime Writers Overkill
Anonymous... they should be able to help…
see yeez later…

  • 3. Tempo loves to discover talent in the community. In this issue you will meet the members of Muse Majlis, five young 'muses' who have a unique concept that combines art, community and giving. Another trailblazer is Lana Nasser, an ad executive who decided to shift career gears and set up her own catering business. In this issue we also have the pleasure to introduce the Dhabi Dames, a spunky group of opinionated expatriate women who come together to learn, live and grow. Abu Dhabi will be entertained in a big way by the three day Motorbike Show which will showcase biker paraphernalia of every form and will also feature the talent of The Dream Players, home grown performers with lots of talent and drive. The magazine is full of business and self improvement features, as well as workshops. The big one this month is the Tamakkan seminar which is being held in collaboration with Mubadala GE Capital, a free knowledge sharing opportunity for all. For technologists Tempo pushes the envelope with a new bag of cool gimmicks that explore the exciting conversion of digital content with print. Engage with Tempo and our writers through www.tempoplanet.com and via contributors' unique twitter handles. It was lovely to have you at my party in Madrid! just a note on your story about Granada, where I also lived many years ago. The Generalife gardens were not built by Christian kings, but was the summer palace of the Nasrid Emirs built under Muhammed III. The gardens were re designed as romantic Gardens at the turn of the century. - Elizabeth Villagomez Thanks for the correction, Elizabeth. I learned so many things during the visit to the Alhambra that some of them have mixed together. • 5. SPACE www. tempoplanet.com 05 TALKING BOOKS By Azza El Masri Azza El Masri is an avid reader and is always looking for new recommendations! If you want her to review a book you fell in love with, or leave a comment on her book bulletin, then you can reach her on: www.tempoplanet.com/category/talking-books REVENGE WEARS PRADA by Lauren Weisberger 2013 It’s been ten years since we’ve last seen Andy Sachs break away from the holds of the domineering dragon lady Miranda Priesley in Paris, something that no assistant in Runway history has ever done. Now, Andy is running her own wedding magazine with the help of Emily—yes, the same Emily from the Runway days. Since the end of her days at the fashion magazine, Andy has managed to steadily build an empire in which she flourished with her best friend on her side and the promise of a future with the most wanted bachelor in up-scale New York society, Max Harrison. But when Andy finds a threatening letter on her wedding day, she finds her past colliding with her present. Miranda Priesley—still as vicious as she’d been ten years ago—slithers her way back into her life and shatters all illusion of happiness and calmness. In the same time, Andy begins to doubt her love to Max and keeps thinking back to Alex, who had left her ten years back and moved to another state, and to another life. Revenge Wears Prada is a true step-up for Weisberger, whose prose has become sharper and more mature with a hint of ironic tone. It is a fun read for all women out there who fell in love with Andy Sachs and the loathsome Miranda Priesley. However, a fair warning must be presented. Fans of the movie will not completely understand the references in the sequel of The Devil Wears Prada because many key plotlines had been transformed to suit Hollywood’s standards and its iconic happily-ever- after end. In that sense, readers must be cautious to read the previous before delving into this one. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT AUTISM? By Manar Al Hinai About a year ago a number of my friends did not know what Autism was. Some thought it referred to a disease that could be treated like the flu, while others thought it was a disease that caused people to be lonely. Autism is a disorder of neural development identified by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communications and repetitive behavior such as fluttering of the arms. Usually a child can be identified of being autistic before the age of three, and though there is no treatment, early detection helps reduce the severity of the symptoms and hopefully helps the child integrate into the community. A year and a half ago, I started volunteering at Abu Dhabi Autism Center in Al Mafraq area. The Center has about 50 Emirati children, and I have loved every second of my time spent there. The children are adorable and the management is very supportive and welcoming of volunteers and those who want to support the children. In addition to enhancing the children’s skills, the center also helps integrate the children into the community, by enrolling them in government schools, and by providing them with vocational training. I personally believe that there is no better form of awareness than a visual one, and I loved the recent awareness public service advertisement of the center which will be played in VOX Marina Mall cinemas theaters prior to the movie, throughout the month of September. If you would like to know more about the center and want to volunteer when you have the time, then check out their website www.zho.ae Charlis Cunningham is a 28 year old American teacher who has been writing poems since the age of five. She recently recited for Tempo her poem ‘Our Roots Run Deep’ which is about family, heritage and culture, as they are passed on from one generation to another. WORD ZONE: POET CHARLIS CUNNINGHAM OUR ROOTS RUN DEEP Our roots run deep like the mighty Mississippi flowing from the Midwest And out of the mouth of its southern delta. Our hearts sit on grandma's porch filled with laughter on a rainy day And lives with the smell of sweet peaches baked under fresh, hand pressed dough. Our roots run deep like coals in the bottom of a barbeque pit Lighting up backyard aromas on the second Saturday of the month. Family recipes passed down from aunt to niece, from grandfather to son And from mother to daughter in a never ending cycle of soulful meals. Our roots run deep like great monarchies of kings and queens. Just as the great Pharaoh built his pyramid to withstand the test of time, We build our home to be a symbol of strength, intelligence, and love. This family is a proud legacy of our ancestors. Our roots run deep like the soul of a juke joint bluesman. They groove to classic hits cruising down the boulevard. These roots of ours connect us to a continent of hope and faith. Aunts, uncles, cousins, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, grandparents and friends alike. Our roots run deep like a fresh January snow; It runs deep like a baritone voice moaning on Sunday morning. Our hearts meditate on bowed knees and to the rhythm of old spirituals. Our roots run deep. In travel photography you want to capture the feeling not only of place, but of time. Here are some tips to getting it right: choose your perfect location, research local activities, understand the customs and traditions of the place, write down everything you like or dislike, and last but not least, try to get lost and explore as much as you can. build ideas based on your research then start taking pictures until you get what you imagined. • 10. WHERE: BASKIN ROBBINS WHAT: Pralines and Cream Caramel Thick Shake BUILD: Vanilla ice cream with praline- coated pecan and caramel ribbon, topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. COMMENT: Baskin Robbins has a variety of milkshakes and they do not disappoint. This drink was creamy and full of texture; the crunch of the pralines teased out the nuttiness of the pecan giving it a smooth flavour. One thing is guaranteed with Baskin Robbins milkshakes – they may be loaded with calories, but they sure have a way of bringing a smile on your face. RECOMMENDATION: Try a topping of waffles on your milkshakes for rich texturing. RATING: 5 stars WHERE: BASKIN ROBBINS (yep we’re doing two of BR, sorry other guys) WHAT: Nutty Fudge Cream Cheese Brownie Shake BUILD: Chocolate fudge ice cream swirled with cream cheese ribbons, walnuts and brownie chunks; deliciously accented with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. COMMENT: Ideal for chocolate lovers, this shake not only gives you a yummy chocolate drink but also doles out chewy chocolate brownie chunks. As if that’s not enough chocolate, cocoa sauce is drizzled on the top melting into the whipped cream to give a marbled finish that feeds both the eyes and the palate. RECOMMENDATION: No one can change ice cream into milkshakes quite like Baskin Robbins; pure decadence all the way. RATING: 5 stars WHERE: STARBUCKS WHAT: Strawberries and Cream Frappuccino (milkshakey enough to qualify in this category) BUILD: Fresh strawberries and cream blended together and topped with whipped cream. COMMENT: This is one of Starbuck’s signature summer drinks and is quite famous for its 100 percent pure strawberry syrup. The freshness of milk combines nicely with the fruity flavour and the thick cream. May not be a gulp-it-down thirst quencher, but still quite perfect for sipping in our scorching summer heat. RECOMMENDATION: Indulge in Starbucks’ “discover your own Frappuccino” experience which allows you to dabble with toppings of coffee and flavoured syrups. RATING: 4 stars www. tempoplanet.com10 FOOD CITY BITES// SHAKE IT UP: MILKSHAKE HEAVEN By Diji Shujahi Once upon a time a milkshake was not the sweet, creamy drink that we know today. It was an alcoholic drink famous for its eggnog-like consistency, and it was used mainly as a tonic after dessert. Thankfully the milkshake has evolved into an innocuous drink that is the go-to energy drink for kids and grownups alike. Tempo decided to indulge in the milkshakes around town… WHERE: COSTA WHAT: Raspberry and White Chocolate Cooler BUILD: Raspberry swirl with creamy white chocolate. COMMENT: Unlike other milkshakes we tried out, this one did not come with whipped cream topping, however the pungent smell of raspberries quickly helped us overcome that initial disappointment. Although the raspberry was strong it was the white chocolate and cream that dominated the flavour. This was a ‘cooler’ by name, and sure enough the swirling crushed ice had a soothing effect on our senses. RECOMMENDATION: Try Costa’s new camel milk drinks, which are said to be high in nutrition and loaded with anti-ageing properties. RATING: 3 stars
  • 11. How does an advertising executive make the transition to becoming a successful restaurateur? We decided to pop into Parti Perfect for pastries and scrumptious pastries to meet 38 year old owner Lana Nasser, and ask her that question. We found the answer right away: with great panache! “I got a BS. in Mass Communication from Boston University in 1996 and I spent six years of copy writing experience at two prominent UAE Advertising agencies. I left it all behind to become a food writer. In 2002, I joined the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE); NYC’s largest and most highly acclaimed center for culinary education both for career training and recreational cooking. FROM BOSTON TO ABU DHABI “In 2004, it was my work at Chef Mark Haley’s ‘Above and Beyond’ Catering Company in Boston, where endless hours of rolling, filling and making recipes for thousands of hors d’oeuvres firmly rooted my desire to have a catering kitchen of my own some day. So when I moved back to Abu Dhabi from Boston in 2008, I started catering right out of the very kitchen I grew up in with all its sounds and wonderful smells. In 2010, I developed Lana’s PartiPerfect Catering Kitchen and it is in this kitchen, I also hope to instill in my kids, their friends, and hopefully lots of other kids in Abu Dhabi the importance of respect towards good food and healthy eating habits. “You could say I did the majority of my growing up in my mother’s kitchen. There was always a dinner party or a special occasion she was preparing for. I would wake up to the clanking sounds of pots and pans, the delectable and comforting smells of freshly baked kaak and maamoul or roasted turkey dinners during the holidays. ‘You can help me by staying out of the kitchen’ was the usual request, but over the years I earned the position of resident chopper, peeler, and herb- picker and then graduated to table décor and assembler of serving platters. These childhood memories must have left a profound impact on me, because eventually, I ended up right where I started, in the kitchen. If there is one thing I took away with me from the philosophy at ICE, and use it still as my secret weapon, is that you create good food from solid cooking techniques and not from recipes. FINETUNING IN NYC “I was able to perfect the art of sautéing, blanching, poaching and trimming by volunteering or as we know it ‘trailing’ 10 to 12 hours at various upscale restaurants, such as ‘Annisa’ in NYC, under Chef Anita Lo (2001 Winner of Food & Wine’s ‘Best New Chef in America’ Award). In the process, I fell in love with cooking, handling fine ingredients, planning menus and understanding the meaning of professional service. I was inspired by Chef Anita, who encouraged me to allow my culture, background and passion to seep into my style and approach towards food. “The first challenge I had would have to be starting a business with children. My two little boys at the time were barely two and three years and being a very hands-on mom, I had to be very skilled at multi-tasking. The second challenge was learning how to set policies and standards so that negative experiences will not be repeated again. The best way to do that was to be the cook, driver, host, menu planner, client manager, accountant and HR. Most of the time all it took is a little trial and error and faith. The last challenge was staying on task in a tough industry, where tastes and needs are so various and keeping everyone happy is very difficult, but I believe if you treat your customer right, the door will always be open to more business. MENU MORSELS “On my menu today, you will find Middle Eastern dishes with a twist such as, Eggplant Fate Tortilla Tartlet, Mini Kibbe Tartlets, Hindbeh on Pomme Paillasson or Mini Grape Leaf Skewers wrapped in Lamb Tenderloin. It’s also my curiosity for new flavors and ingredients that keeps our menu fresh and edgy. And even if it’s a new recipe that we haven’t perfected yet, we will keep working on it until it becomes one of our most popular items on the menu. Our two most popular and perfect examples are our Red Velvet Cake and Sticky Date Pudding with Caramel Sauce. “We are known to take our main dishes and create smaller versions of them so clients can try a variety of cuisines all in one go. I enjoy experimenting with our Middle Eastern cuisine and introducing new flavors and methods to some of the more traditional dishes. Chefs are like artists, they are as good as their last creation so it’s important for them to keep innovating and keeping the trends fresh and exciting; food is like any product that needs to be continuously revamped. “I hope in the next five years to have a few branches in the Middle East and later to become a household name; I really want our brand to explode on the food scene.” www. tempoplanet.com 11 PERFECT PARTY: AT PARTI PERFECT FOOD By Ajir Shujahi

Tempo writer and award-winning poet, Paul D, sat down with photographer James Simmons of JS Photography to discusses the passion for picture-taking in the UAE… Paul D: Tell us about your background and how you got into photography. James: I was born in the United States, in Mississippi to be exact, but I consider Atlanta, Georgia, home because I moved there when I was four. I have been in the UAE for two years now. I was at university when I first began to take interest in photography, and that is when I bought my first digital camera, the Canon Powershot SD 700. I was a Canon fan back in the day. That camera went everywhere with me. It's kind of ironic now because I'm a Nikon fan now. I guess we evolve with age. Paul D: You encouraged me to get a Canon for my trip to South Africa last summer and now you just up and switch brands on me?! What was the catalyst that got you in to photography? Was there a specific picture? James: Since buying my first camera, I developed an interest in traveling and taking pictures. I can't say that it was a specific picture that was the ‘catalyst’ but rather an album of pictures I put together for my family after my return from the Serengeti. I was proud of that album and that's when I knew my hobby had transformed into a passion. Paul D: You do amazing work as the official photographer for our Rooftop Rhythms poetry show. What do you think stands out about your pictures over an average picture taken by someone else? James: That's a major compliment and I appreciate all the love Rooftop Rhythms supporters show when the pictures are displayed on Facebook. I go into every show with the mindset that I'm going to capture the atmosphere and mood of the show. It's actually a great event to photograph because the atmosphere is electric and people are social and happy. Paul D, as the creator/MC of Rooftop Rhythms, how is it that you succeed in creating that electric atmosphere? Paul D: I try to facilitate a unique cultural experience through great location, music and creative performance poetry. A diverse crowd that is comfortable and feels appreciated will also organically help to produce that excitement you feel. How would you recommend a young photography enthusiast get started? James: The best advice I could give would be to have fun and be excited to learn new things every time you pick up your camera. Don't concern yourself with the quality of your equipment or trying to get the perfect picture. Sometimes the best pictures come from just having fun. Paul D: What is your favourite location in the UAE to take pictures? James: There are so many great places to take pictures in the UAE, but if I had to pick my favourite it would have to be Hatta, because of its desert, mountains, and Bedouin villages. There is culture, interesting people, and scenery at every turn. Paul D: Tell us more about JS Photography and how you can be contacted. James: JS Photography was never the plan I envisioned. I just had a passion for photography and love the art of capturing the moment. My goal at every photo shoot or event is to capture the look or atmosphere while having a good time. • 16. www. tempoplanet.com16 COMMUNITY THE DHABI DAMES AT HOME IN THE UAE: THE DHABI DAMES By Marien Oomen An introduction by Marien to Dhabi Dames, a delightful group of women who meet regularly to discuss tackling daily problems in a positive and proactive manner - with a goal to becoming better, and happier, mothers and wives… “I personally have been living in this beautiful city since 1998 and feel life is getting better every passing year, because Abu Dhabi grows on you. As a woman/ wife you find the first two teething years difficult because you have uprooted yourself from familiar grounds. In contrast the man in your life finds his job comfortably stable – he has a three bedroom apartment, with maid, tax-free income, and the glamour of living abroad. He feels he has made it, while you -his wife - have to find your own way, and, indeed - your own happiness. Where do you fit in? Do you feel you were once a Woman of the Board Room and are now Queen Maker of Salads, Chauffeur of the Children, The Ironing Whiz Woman, The Laundry Lady? We’ve found that it typically takes two to three years for an expat woman to get on solid ground, to feel needed and to be recognized as somebody. The newbies rush to join groups that meet at coffee shops, hotels. They attend every Poetry Reading, Book Club, and art collector’s soirees, coffee mornings etc. Visits to the souk, craft village, desert drives are all drafted in. So when husband gets home in the evening, he’s happy to see his exhausted but chirpy wife. That’s goodness sufficient for the day. On the flip side, if she is a highly social butterfly, she will throw parties and before the husband can say ‘Camel’, he is roped into her social evenings. Then there are those women who can’t afford a maid, and quietly do all the housework, the grocery shopping, help with their kids’ homework, and drive the children to and from the after-school activities. They have just about enough time to cook, clean up, and watch TV for an hour before crashing into bed. They lead a simple, no frills existence, with a visit to Lulu becoming a weekend outing for the whole family. The icing on the cake would be a Chinese meal at an Indian restaurant… We dedicate Dhabi Dames to all of the women out there who manage to find meaning in everyday things.” CULTURE: SARI SWAG By Angelique Goldsworthy With Onam, ‘the harvest festival, happening this September, South African expatriate Angelique recalls her own cultural immersion experience when she decided to learn how to wear a “sari” to a harvest festival event… I was invited to an Onam event hosted by the Kerala community at my husband's company and decided to wear a sari to immerse myself in the culture. My good friend from Kerala offered me her Kerala sari to wear, and so one evening I went across to learn how to drape and fold the beautiful garment. The two of us were chatting so much that I never paid much attention until my friend said, "Oh, you look lovely! Do you want to try putting it on yourself?" I glanced in the mirror and loved the feminine silhouette I reflected there. I felt so lovely with such little effort! I thought I could easily replicate that myself, or so I thought. I mean women had been doing it for centuries, right? How difficult could it be? Aah... Well, the following morning when I tried to put it on, I became entangled in oodles and oodles of cream and gold fabric. It billowed out in waves across the bed, over the floor, out into the bathroom and back again. In the wise words of Buzz Lightyear, 'To infinity and beyond!' The sari had a life of its own! I managed to untangle myself and escape. In a panic, I left the house and ran across Angelique in a sari Marien Oomen Marien Oomen
  • 17. www. tempoplanet.com 17 PARENTING 101 WHO SAYS PARENTING IS EASY? By Avnita Bir The arrival to the world of “King George” the heir to the British throne, has thrust the debate about ‘new parent syndrome’ into the news as parents Prince William and Kate Middleton grapple with the trials and tribulations of ‘new parenthood’. Here is insight from Avnita Bir, who offers insight about ‘Parenting 101’… Moments after the birth of my first born, I felt a sense of relief - and euphoria. I thought I had completed the toughest task of my life. However, the euphoria did not last. I realized there were no readymade solutions for parenting; babies don’t come with manuals or guidebooks. Each new day brought a fresh set of problems that needed to be addressed, and with each seemingly insurmountable challenge I felt more inadequate. My story is not that of any isolated parent. It spans across age groups, cultures, and countries. The issues are more or less uniform and if one were to collate all of them, there would be a common thread running through. Issues range from your child spending all his time on sports, to your daughter insisting on sleepovers; to excessive time spent on social networking and dealing with relationship matters; to obsession with branded clothing and gadgets; to school adjustment and academic issues; to dealing with peer pressure and balancing studies with a myriad other distractions …the list is endless. Every parent feels intimidated and often helpless to deal with challenges. As a teacher/ principal/mentor I have interacted with thousands of children, and have met many parents. I realize that in the fast changing climate that we currently live in the number of challenges are increasing exponentially. I often have to sit back and reflect rather than jump to the most obvious and natural response to a situation, and also revisit my value system in order to align it to today’s times. Some principles are steadfast and unchangeable through time: my advice to parents is to remain connected with your child at all times and follow your natural parental instinct as ultimately, your intuition can never go wrong. Feel the ‘pulse’ of your child, and try to understand where he or she is coming from. Children can be quite communicative, and if you read the signs well you will be able to differentiate a genuine concern from a superficial matter. Handhold your child when it is required, and give your children the freedom they need, while explaining that independence comes with responsibility. Use meal times productively as these, along with other family occasions, are essential for bonding. And always, always, let your child feel the comfort of not having to face challenges alone. In a nutshell: be firm, be kind, and be consistent! the road, in my petticoat and tiny little bare-midriff top, to find the kindly Indian nanny who worked for my neighbor. The nanny answered the door and looked quite taken aback when I asked her for help. Quite indignant at my state of half undress, she proclaimed, "I am not Indian, I am Sri Lankan!" and then completely refused to help me. I think I must have committed some sort of cultural faux pas. Had I not seen the dear woman wear a kind of sari many times before? Just how different could one sari be from another? Perhaps I was not as keenly observant as I thought. I felt like a complete cultural idiot! So, still confused and now running late, we set off for the celebrations, me in my undergarments trailing a sea of fabric in my wake! As we neared the venue, my husband phoned his Indian colleague who sent out two smiling angels in saris, to help me dress. I was swiftly ushered into a dressing room, pulsating with vibrant colours and sounds. Here the Indian dancers and traditional drummers were getting ready to perform. The three of us squeezed into a tiny cubicle where my new friends wrapped, pinned, tucked the sari, and finally adorned my hair with sweet-smelling Jasmine flowers. I felt like a Bollywood princess. Applause sounded as I entered the auditorium to take my seat, red-faced and breathless, beside my husband! The Onam festivities included traditional dancing and singing, a re-enactment of the return of King Mahabali and a meal of delicious vegetarian dishes served on banana leaves. That day, I made some new friends and also learnt a few important lessons about culture and the importance of paying attention! As a family we thoroughly enjoyed a happy day, full of feasting and dancing. Avnita Bir(Principal, Educator and Mentor) Angelique Goldsworthy

  • 19. Tempo came across a unique group of Emirati girls who call themselves ‘The Muses’. The five, who go only by their assumed identities, launched Muse Majlis in Ramadan to inspire community thinking and giving. The Muses identify themselves as Muse 1 as the ‘The Strong One,’ ‘Muse 2 as the‘The Flower in the Teapot,’ Muse 3 as ‘The Light,’ Muse 4 as ‘The Glue’ and Muse 5 as ‘The Old Soul. Tempo attended the charity event they organized, and was attended by over 300 guests who came together to raise money for charity. The event was exquisite in its uniqueness, but what was more compelling to Tempo was the creative thinking of the young ladies. Here’s our chat with ‘The Muses’… TEMPO: What is the Muse Concept? MUSE 1: Basically we’re five girls that came together, and we all have a mutual interest and were pretty much connected in giving back to society. We all contribute in different ways which makes us special. MUSE 5: In Greek mythology, muse (pronounced Muze) were gods of inspiration. There were muses of music, art, poetry. Muses are usually depicted holding symbolic items that depict what they represent. We presented each muse as what they represent. TEMPO: so what is the Muse Majlis? Muse 2: We wanted to create a very informal way for girls to gather together, and eat, play games and socialize while still having an intellectual concept. MUSE 1: She created a world where girls could have intellectual conversations. MUSE 4: We wanted to have girls be inspired. We wanted to break the barrier of thinking “Oh yeah a girls majlis, it’s probably filled with gossip.” TEMPO: What are the goals or angles you girls are coming from? We’re coming from two different angles. Muse 1 wanted to create a charity event while I really wanted to create a platform to support small to medium enterprises that are local based, meaning that the businesses do not have to be locally funded, but they just have to be based here in the UAE. I wanted to create a platform that would help them expand, but not only growth expansion wise but rather to grow with the entrepreneurial spirit and think outside the box. Off course we wouldn’t support these businesses financially but rather give them spirit and guidelines. TEMPO: How long did it take to plan all this? And when did you ladies get the idea? MUSE 3: There has been a lack of sleep in all of this because we don’t sleep! We have a whatsapp group we communicate through always, and any free time we get with each other, we’re always focusing and determined to get it done. It’s sort of like a Ramadan Miracle if you allow me to say it, we thought of the idea 10 days ago and we wanted to make it happen. MUSE 1: We’re all so blessed and we’re young but we want to take the little step now, and just give back to society. TEMPO: Why do the muses prefer to hide the identities? MUSE 1: The Muses choose not to reveal our identities because we would like The Muse Majlis to prosper and grow based on the success of the events. Also, with charity it is better not to reveal one’s identity and the muses choose to do so. The muses are not looking for fame even though most family and friends know who the ladies are, they prefer to sit backstage and run the show discretely. TEMPO: What kind of advice would you give to much younger people? MUSE 5: We would open our hearts and mind to them. We want to inspire them by giving pep talks and tell them to think of a different idea because everyone should be innovative in their own way. MUSE 5: Your uniqueness sells. MUSE 4: There are no rules for anything. TEMPO: Your future events or plans? MUSE 1: We want to give back to society and stick to our vision. • 21. www. tempoplanet.com 21 YOUR CALL, YOUR BRAND: TO ADVERTISE IN THE WIDEST CIRCULATED YOUTH AND COMMUNITY FOCUSED MAGAZINE IN THE UAE, CALL: +971 2 491 8624 “Hey! Cnt wait 2 c u!! xx” says the text on my phone ( the ‘smart’ BlackBerry Torch 9800). That was from a friend I hadn’t met in years. We were classmates till the eight grade, and then she left for Bahrain. Facebook reunited us and we became “friends” again. I hadn’t seen her face to face, or spoken to her, until she told me of her visit to Dubai and her desire to see me! (Clear from the text she sent me). So, we met, after all these years. Face to face. For lunch. At a mall in Dubai. After the first few minutes of squealing “hi’s” and “how are you’s,” the conversation came to a rather unnatural stop – ‘unnatural’ because we’d been talking on Facebook for sometime, but when we actually saw each other face-to-face, we didn’t know what to say to each other! It made me think that this must be one of the effects of technology on our generation. Us teenagers don’t know how to talk face-to- face anymore! Heck, kids don’t even know how to spell and write properly, thanks to autocorrect, text-shorthand, and keypads for that. Most children don’t know their way around their own city - because they’re too busy cocooned on the internet in a car while someone is driving, to pay attention to their surroundings. Or it is because they don’t feel the need to focus as they’re heavily dependent on GPS to get around. I’m a Gen Y kid and I too am technically hooked to all these technologies. But I’m starting to see the light! I’m fighting to not get “hooked”. I am deliberately booking only a set time with my gadgets, and that’s based on necessity. Otherwise, I’m all for ‘old school entertainment’ – newspapers, crosswords, books, scrabble etc. It wasn’t always like this for me, and I can’t say that it’s been easy. I used to be glued to Facebook, BBM, WhatsApp and all the other stuff, but lately all that has lost its charm. I realize how apathetic it made me to my surroundings and how pathetic I was becoming! I now believe that this whole digital world has warped us all up in its big net, and that everything from relationships to thoughts, feelings and responses have become so virtual that sometimes people don’t know who someone “really” is anymore! It also makes your physical world disappear into oblivion, while your virtual world, with faraway virtual avatars, seem more real. Mindboggling, right? Medically as well all this technology can’t be good for our health. Imagine how we’re glued to a phone, TV, laptop, tablet etc, all the time. I read somewhere that if four mobiles are kept in a circle and all four are called at the same time, the radiation produced is sufficient to pop corn kernels placed inside the circle. I’ve also heard that using a laptop can decrease fertility rates. I’m not saying that the whole social media or technological development should be rejected. All I’m saying is that this obsession has to be used with some limitation. Otherwise we are headed for a future where our minds and thinking capacities will be as restricted as that of a machine. So pop that virtual bubble and let’s all get real, folks! By Mugdha Sunil Polimera YOUTH TALK// TECHNOLOGY: SOCIALLY UNSOCIAL HECK, KIDS DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW TO SPELL AND WRITE PROPERLY, THANKS TO AUTOCORRECT, TEXT-SHORTHAND, AND KEYPADS FOR THAT.
  • 22. NEWS & GOSSIP SAMSUNG SET TO ANNOUNCE SMARTWATCH CNN Reports that Samsung may be the latest company to enter the red-hot wrist-tech market. The Android powered device will be called the Galaxy Gear and will be able to handle the smartphone basics: phone calls, Web surfing and e-mails. Samsung is announcing the product this month, just ahead of the big IFA consumer electronics show in Germany. Competitors in the smart-watch category include Sony, Pebble and I'm Watch. Blakniss Original game head from Atari to XBox! Shahid Saeed Talker for the Non-Techies GAME HEDZ TECH TALK BIOSHOCK DLC The Background Bioshock Infinite has found a place in gaming history (recent history that is) and is considered one of the best games this year. Of all time? Well only time has that answer. But if you're a fan of the franchise you have an upcoming Downloadable Content (DLC) to look forward to! If you've completed Infinite (and you really should have by now) then you know about the time bending connection between Rapture, the undersea city in the first two installments, and Columbia, the airborne city of Infinite. For the noobs, we discover that the main characters in both cities are essentially the same character in a different place and time. Name and dates may change, but the people remain the same. It was a huge and brilliant twist that took us all by surprise. THE DLC STORY This story, called Burial At Sea, takes place in the city of Rapture 2 years before its eventual ruination (I love that word). With two episodes, you play as Booker DeWitt in the first and his daughter Elizabeth in the second. The details of the story are still unknown, but my astute brilliance tells me we'll get some more holes filled regarding the connection between the Columbia universe and the one in Rapture. As dimensional travel is now a central element in story, we'll no doubt experience characters 'meeting themselves' and potential time/ space paradoxes (whatever those are). While some folks are disappointed that we're going back to Rapture, I'm stoked that we're going to see the city in its full glory - shiny, new and going crazy. DeWitt and Elizabeth's characters have been redesigned slightly for this DLC. Elizabeth looks older and more voluptuous for some reason, and at the time of writing, we didn't have an update on DeWitt's makeover. Based on the released art, one gets the impression that these are very different versions of the Infinite characters. The release is to be announced. It'll cost about U$ 30 for both episodes. • 24. Dr. Alma Kadragic MEDIA Ever since August 5 when Amazon’s Jeff Bezos announced he was buying the Washington Post, everyone I know and everyone whose columns I read has been talking about the deal. Most reactions are negative which is unfortunate; the news business should be on the cutting edge of all kinds of progress, but too many journalists distrust new techniques and new media. Like me, some of my friends are former journalists, and they tend to be pessimistic about what will happen to the Post, one of America’s best and best- known newspapers. Like all American newspapers – except for the Wall Street Journal – the new era of free digital news on newspaper websites has been tough on the Washington Post or WaPo as it’s known to news junkies. One of the surprising things about former journalists and even some still covering news is how conservative they are - not politically, but in the way they work. They’ve resisted new media from the beginning; they distrust the opportunities the digital age offers for using a multitude of sources and telling a story in different ways to exploit the possibilities of video, audio, still photography, and internet links. So for them the acquisition of WaPo by Bezos means the end of news as they know it. They reacted the same way when Rupert Murdoch bought the Wall Street Journal at the beginning of August six years ago. The only motive they can attribute to Murdoch and Bezos is a desire to control news and the editorial process. We don’t know what Bezos will do, but we already know that Murdoch has invested funds in the Journal’s newsgathering and left the editorial team alone. I think it’s likely that Bezos too didn’t buy WaPo to control editorials or direct how the news is gathered because there’s no money in that. Behind both purchases of major newspaper titles by billionaires is the desire to unlock new sources of revenue in traditional media. Murdoch has been buying media titles in Australia, the UK, and here for years. Interestingly, his papers represent a variety of different types and were taken in different directions. It would have been hard to predict what would happen to each acquisition based on the previous one. Unlike Murdoch, Bezos has no track record with newspapers; like Murdoch he knows how to make money. He has developed Amazon from zero to a game changer that controls sales of books and many other products around the world. Although he’s never owned a paper before, he bought WaPo for $250 million, an amount most of us can’t imagine which for a billionaire is practically chump change. Being an optimist about the opportunities that new media offers for journalism today and will create in the future, I have hopes that Bezos will figure out how to make WaPo much more profitable that it has been over the past ten years. The man who learned how to satisfy customers after Amazon had huge difficulties fulfilling orders in the early days may be able to come up with a new way to make journalism profitable. If there is a way to finance news media at a time when print advertising is declining and revenues from digital advertising are nowhere near what print advertising used to bring in, I think Jeff Bezos can find it. And that will make all of us news junkies very happy. Follow Alma Kadragic on Twitter: @almakad www. tempoplanet.com24 NEWS MEDIA: THE JEFF BEZOS EFFECT

  • 27. “Work hard, play hard” is a saying that many people use, but the truth is that only a few people can keep up the pace in both pursuits. ‘Work-life balance’ is now part of the business lexicon but it should be considered as more than just a phrase. The simple fact is that managers, executives and employees all perform better when they can balance their work life with their personal life. As a business owner, you have a responsibility to not only take care of your employees but also to look after yourself. It is natural that you will put long and irregular hours into your business; but it is critical for your work efficiency and health to ensure you spend time away from the business to relax and refresh your mind and body. The same goes for your employees. As a manager, you should establish a culture that encourages a work-life balance for your staff. Of course it is important for them to work diligently, but that doesn’t mean chaining them to their desk for 12 hours a day. Tired and disgruntled workers do not perform effectively so it makes simple business sense to ensure they are energized and invigorated –productivity is improved, better decisions are made and employees are happier. TAMAKKAN BALANCING ACT: TAKE TIME TO CHILL www. tempoplanet.com 27 TIPS FOR IMPROVING WORK-LIFE BALANCE: Allow staff extra time-off for• genuine family situations without making them feel guilty Ensure staff take regular breaks• during the day, even for 10 minutes each time – this is when they can make important personal phone calls Create a culture of ‘work smarter,• not harder’ – long hours don’t always mean high productivity Organize social activities that• include the families of employees Introduce additional staff• benefits such as subsidized gym memberships or dance classes Provide small random awards for• good work, such as cinema tickets or dinner vouchers, to encourage staff to go out If staff work longer hours on an• urgent project, give them extra time- off the next day Be flexible around essential personal• issues that can only be done during the day – negotiate with the employee on how they will make up the time Allow employees to work from home• if they need to do unforseen family duties like babysitting Ian Mason TAMAKKAN FAVE TWEETS OF THE MONTH Richard Branson- @richardbranson Once you’ve changed the• world once, you’ll do it again and again and again. • 28. www. tempoplanet.com28 Theresa Weber WOMEN IN BUSINESS: With summer vacation over and offices fully staffed again, September is a great month to focus on becoming a better boss. Many women in management feel they have to outperform their male counterparts just to be considered as equally talented. Instead of working harder to outperform someone, try working differently. As conventional wisdom often results in mediocrity, I have found that the best bosses do the opposite of what an average boss does. Here are some unconventional tips to being a great boss. 1. PUT THE CUSTOMER SECOND, AND EMPLOYEES FIRST. Many managers use the common axiom, “put the customer first.” But by doing so, they can overlook the people who are responsible for developing the customer experience – their employees. Customers and clients can immediately sense when employees are miserable, overworked, or under trained. Great bosses concentrate on making certain that their employees are happy, healthy and trained properly so they can do the work. 2. DON’T USE FEAR AS A MANAGEMENT TOOL. Fear is the bad manager’s favourite emotion. Why? Because it works. But remember it works in the same way crash-dieting works: you can lose five pounds in a week by starving yourself, but it is not sustainable. Managers who operate through implied or obvious threats will get what they want – but the best people will leave as quickly as they can find a way out. When employees are worrying about whether they will be fired, criticized or humiliated, their brains are in survival mode, just to get through the day. Great bosses know that creativity and innovation are essential to success. They don't use fear as a management tool, instead they focus on positive emotions that bring out optimism, hope and confidence in their teams. 3. HIRE PEOPLE SMARTER THAN YOU. Average bosses like to be the smartest person in the room. They think it is their job to know all the answers and give them to their employees. But by acting this way, they deprive their employees of the opportunity to grow and think on their own, which is essential for solving problems. They end up hiring people who keep the status quo rather than improve the organization. Great bosses hire smart people because they don’t limit themselves to their job descriptions. Smart people go above and beyond the call of duty as they realize their most important job is to help the company expand. Great bosses don’t need to have all the answers; they just need a team of smart people. 4. MEASURE YOURSELF BY YOUR WORST EMPLOYEES. Bosses like to point to their top performers as a sign of how successful they are as managers. However, the success of a top performer is often a reflection of that person's drive and ability, not just what the manager did. Great bosses know that the real measure of a manager's skill is how he or she handles the poor performers. Your worst performers illustrate exactly what you, as a manager, are willing to tolerate. Providing proper training and goal setting will help improve poor performers. If performance does not improve, then it is time to let them go. 5. FOCUS ON FUTURE TRENDS NOT PAST FINANCIAL REPORTS. Many bosses use monthly or annual financial reports to prove they are good managers. While that is useful management tool for financial purposes, it is important to remember that these reports represent the history of what has happened. Focusing on them is like trying to drive a car while looking in the rear- view mirror. Great bosses know that the only way to get good financial figures in the future is to focus on what is currently happening in the business and industry. Concentrate on getting your employees to stay abreast of current and future trends. By putting your employees first, fostering innovation, hiring people smarter than you, improving your worst performers and focusing on the future, you are on your way to becoming a great boss. • 29. GROW A GREENER HOME With so much pressure on our time – with kids to get to school, work to be done, dinner to be cooked, it can become exhausting hearing about the things that we need to do to make our homes and offices ‘greener’. Yes, every little thing counts, but how long does it take to do those little things every week? Wouldn’t it be so much easier if the easy things at home were simple and didn’t take up your time? There are a few examples below, but these are by no means an exhaustive list. It would be great to hear your own suggestions on The Planetarians Facebook page or on Twitter. REPLACING LIGHT BULBS1. – If your house is anything like mine, a lightbulb seems to blow at least once a week. Instead of buying a bulk pack of your standard incandescent light bulbs next time you are at the supermarket, but a pack of CFLs – or the twisty bulb ones as I like to call them! They are much more energy efficient, and last longer, reducing your waste, and the number of times you have to go up the ladder! USE GREEN CLEANING PRODUCTS2. – available in most supermarkets, brands like Ecover are kind to your home, as well as kind to the environment, helping you to have a cleaner, greener home! INDOOR PLANTS3. – not necessarily helping you to reduce the energy that you consume, but indoor plants aid oxygenation, help reduce chemicals in the air, and even help you to focus more – meaning you can work for less time! TURN DOWN YOU’RE A/C AND FRIDGE SETTINGS4. – Its something that we have mentioned before, and in a country where we all revel in being able to walk into a nice chilled building after being outside in the heat, it is all the more critical. Even just keeping the temperature at 24 degrees, as DEWA suggests, will help reduce your impact on the environment. Most of our energy usage comes from heating and cooling, so it is the smallest turn of the dial that may make the biggest impact. These are just four things that I personally have been trying to do around my own home. Although I am in a constant battle with my A/C temperature controls! If you have any suggestions as to what you have been doing in your own home, I would love to hear them and share them online. Find The Planetarians on Facebook, or Twitter at the links below. • 30. …I s’pose when ye’ve spent most of yer life ‘behaving yerself’ at home, at school, in nice company… when the opportunity presents itself to kick over the traces, and… well… go nuts, really… in a way that actually doesn’t hurt emb’dy… who can resist?… one of the joys of being a novelist is ye can dispose of people… make them go away, permanently… ceasing to breathe… inventive methods of elimination are restricted only by yer imagination… in the olden days of gangster-type novels a favoured go-away-and-don’t- come-back stunt was being part of the ingredients in a cement-mixer cake… if we’re to believe it all, most of the buildings in inner city America have Deceased-Three-Finger-Freddie-type fossilised foundations… the bluudthursty hunger that settles so comfortably into the crime thriller scribbler’s quiver is startling… at the last count, in two and a half novels, I’ve killed off more people than the Bubonic Plague accounted for in the mid-1600's… and it all seems so pleasurable… if this were ‘real-life’… where with a whirl of my whim, lethal licence were granted to me… stand back and watch the devastation… first up are the people who install those infernal robo-answering machines in companies, taking twenty minutes of your runaround time to get back to, ‘…if ye’re still here, press ’1' again, yer call is important to us…’ next rub-out candidates are the Loonies in the Supermarkets… ye know the ones… ye’ve got yer two, maximum three items ready and ye make a beeline for the till checkout lady at the end exit row… ye can’t miss it… above it, hangs a billboard-size notice in wurds that even Blind Pugh could read, ‘ten items or less—and cash only’… the bloke in front starts to empty his lot onto the sliding conveyor thingy… the checkout lady starts to ring up the items,…Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching!... when the Ka-Ching! Kount reaches fifteen items, his hand-basket resembles a conjurer’s box… items keep appearing… my Govan Docklands sense of right and wrong can’t be contained… I ask the fellow in disgust… ‘so, which is it?… ye can’t read?... or ye can’t count?’… he stiffens up, spreads his hands and says (get this!), ‘well, ye know, I’m in a hurry’… this is when the fight usually starts… to the unrestrained delight of the rest of the 10-or-less brigade in the queue behind me, I launch into one of my tirades, ‘Oh, ye’re in hurry? well that’s okay, coz I’ve got my whole life to wait here at the FAST checkout queue, waiting to teach numpties like you how to read and count’… fluster, fluster, from Mister Can’t-Read-Or-Count… he makes to pay… with a credit card... he hasn’t a red cent on him!… of course, the card limit has long been exhausted and gets rejected… ye get the idea… the late Ian Fleming, he who gave us the ageless Jimmy Bond, Dubble-Oh-Slur, used to mark a wee pencil cross on every tenth page of his manuscripts… this told him it was time for another blow-’em-to-hell-or-somewhere bit of action… I sense my manuscripts may have more crosses than a tic-tac-toe convention… I’m thinking of calling Crime Writers Overkill Anonymous... they should be able to help… see yeez later… www. tempoplanet.com30 THE BLOG By Seumas Gallacher … Loaded Laptop Alert … Licence To Kill …Polite Warning …DO NOT APPROACH THIS WRITER…
