Pernahkah kamu mengamati/mendengar dalam percakapan,ketika patner atau orang yang
diajak bicara merespon seperti:
1. I see
2. Did you?
3. Do you?
4. Are you OK/fine/ alright?
5. Exactly!
6. Pardon me?
7. Really?
8. Yes
9. Right
10. What`s next?
11. I know what you mean.
12. Oh, my God ! What happened?
13. What`s the matter?
14. Right
15. And then?
16. Um-hmm
17. Is that all?
18. How interesting!
19. Yeah.
20. Oh,no!
Ungkapan-ungkapan tersebut menunjukkan bahwa orang tersebut masih tertarik dengan
ceritamu atau menyetujui pernyataanmu. Juga tersirat makna bahwa lawan bicara masih
menginginkan kamu untuk tetap meneruskan ceritamu /penjelasanmu.
Kadang-kadang dalam menunjukkan perhatian atas apa yang kamu jelaskan, seseorang
menunjukkan perasaan terkejutnya dengan membelalakkan matanya atau ternganga mendengar
ceritamu. Bisa juga seseorang tersebut hanya menyatakan dengan ungkapan surprise/terkejut
secara verbal seperti
- Really?
- What?
- Oh, no!
- No kidding!
2. Menunjukkan perhatian pada orang lain ,bias juga diungkapkan dengan ungkapan-ungkapan
sympathy,misalnya :
- Oh, dear. I know how it feels
- I`m sorry to hear that
- Poor you!
- What a terrible situation!
- Please accept my condolences!
- That`s too bad!
- ,etc.
Cara lain yang bias kamu gunakan untuk menunjukkan bahwa kamu care pada teman atau orang
lain yakni dengan memberikan pujian/compliment , misalnya:
- I just love your hair that way!
- That`s a beautiful dress you have on!
- I really like your new bag!
Perhatikan beberapa contoh percakapan berikut ini.
1. Nana curhat tentang pacarnya yang cerewet. Sehingga dia tak lagi mencintainya .
Sementara Rian terus menunjukkan perhatian akan percakapan tersebut. Amatilah, ungkapan-
ungkapan apa saja yang dia pakai untuk menunjukkan bahwa dia masih tertarik /siap
mendengarkan apa yang Nana curhatkan.
Nana : You know, my new boy- friend is very talkative. I don`t like him very much.
Rian :What?
Nana : Terrible. He just talks big!
Rian :Mm-hmm
3. Nana : He likes telling about himself and his own belongings.
Rian :Really?
2. Vani menjelaskan mengenahi arah yang tepat untuk diikuti oleh Sonny. Sementara itu untuk
menunjukkan bahwa dia memahami apa yang Vaniceritakan, Sonny mengatakan “I see” yang
berarti “Saya paham apa yang kamu katakan”.
Vani : Don`t turn right. Just go straight ahead until the second crossroad. Got that?
Sonny: So, go straight ahead. Yeah
Vani:That`s right. Then turn right.OK?
Sonny: I see.
3. Anita is getting mixed up with Mira ,her old friend. It seems that she doesn`t recognize her
anymore.Bobby feels surprise to hear it.
Anita : I spoke with Mira on the phone, but she acted as if she had not known me before.
Bobby :Oh no! You were such good friends before. How come?
4. Two students are on their way to school. They are talking about something personal.
This news makes his friend surprised.
A : I`m married and pregnant. I don’t know what to do right now.
B : No kidding!
4. 5. Erik tells Diah about what happens to him. He lost his bicycle.
Erik : A terrible thing happened to me last night. My mom was mad at me.
Diah : Um-hmm. Why?
Erik : I lost my bicycle when I parked it in front of the post office.
Diah : Oh no!That`s too bad.

or we don’t catch what he or she said)

Y : Ok.

X: Did you say Andersen or Henderson?
Y : Henderson, with an H.
X : Is "Cathy" spelled with a C or a K?
Y : It's C.

Y : It’s sad. But indonesia is still famous with other tourist resorts such as Bali beach, Komodo
island, Toba lake, etc.
X : Yes, you are right.
2. X: I’m very happy now.
Y: What happened?
X: My mother gives me a present.
Y : What is it?
X : It is Acer Netbook
Y : Your mother is very kind.
C. Grammar that is used in showing attention and asking for repetition
- Imperative verb (Exclamation verb)
