Satellite telephone, also known as a satphone, is a type of mobile phone that enables the user to communicate
with each other by connecting directly to orbiting satellites, instead of terrestrial cellular telephone sites. It
possesses the same characteristics as a terrestrial cellular phone, however can work effectively in remote areas
where terrestrial cellular services are not available such as in areas where the government has restricted
internet access & calls or areas affected by natural disasters.
A satphone sends radio signals to the satellite positioned in geosynchronous orbit, low-earth orbit as well as
medium-earth orbit of the earth. These signals are then transmitted back to an earth’s station which helps in
directing them to Public Swithed Telephone Network (PSTN). The outgoing call from a satphone communicates
with the satellite within the line of sight. However, in few cases, satphone providers may transfer the signals
from one satellite to another satellite, which is connected to a station situated on the earth.
On account of system architecture, a satphone can work anywhere in the world, and remains unaffected during
storms, floods, hurricanes, etc. While, a cell phone cannot withstand in such harsh conditions due to the
destruction of power and telecommunication infrastructure in the affected area. Moreover, call rates of
satphones are much cheaper and have a wide global network coverage rate as compared to cell phones. In
addition, there are no roaming charges on satellite phones as the user gets charged for outgoing calls only as
per the payment plan offered by different satellite phone network providers.
