1. How does your text represent age,
gender, class , ethnicity and/or
religion?
By Tayla Lay
2. Teenagers
• The only social group represented
would be teenagers. There is a
stereotype of a rebellious, rude and
blunt attitude for the common
adolescent youth.
• Mental issues are extremely common
in this age group. Whether it be
anxiety, depression, schizophrenia,
ADHD etc. A good percentage of the
teenage population have to deal with
this. In our project the ideology of this
is a presented with a young male with
schizophrenia as the lead.
3. Andrew
Overview:
• Andrew is a 19 year old male dealing with
schizophrenia. In our sequence we only know
that he is going through a hard time with his
mental issues and the audience get a glimpse
into his mind; seeing that he is haunted by this
unknown figure.
4. Age
• At 17 years old, Andrew represents
teenagers. Our target audience is
around 15-25 and therefore they can
relate in some way and we know the
audience likes having a main cast of the
same age range. Our audience we
know is also mainly male based and
again will be able to relate to him.
Teenagers are represented through
Andrew and does conform to the
stereotype of them being quite
unorthodox, moody and
misunderstood. Since we chose
teenagers, in horror films they're
usually centered around older more
adult like characters, so this stereotype
is also subverted.
5. Gender
• Our sequence focuses on Andrew who is a male. This gender
is more fixated on as he is the lead. We decided to have a
lead male as the target audience would likely to be mainly
males. As well as this stereotypes are subverted as usually in a
horror film, girls or women are key as they are seen to be
weaker and more vulnerable and males are stronger so aren’t
as focused on. Our horror is different as it is psychological and
so we wanted to convey a message with it. Mental issues
aren’t just based with females, many males have to too.
6. Class
• In our sequence class isn’t really represented much;
however, it could suggest Andrew is of middle class
due to the way he is dressed. A hoodie and jeans is
very casual and therefore shows he is quite carefree.
On the other hand he has private care going to the
therapist, this could imply he has money and a
wealthy background.
• The therapist herself is dressed smartly and through
this she is represented as wealthy and intelligent.
