This presentation was created to explain archival methods to students at Qatar Academy. The presentation is designed to help students understand how decisions are made regarding the permanent retention of objects and information applying the concept of intrinsic value through the collections of NARA.
9. “Intrinsic value is the archival term that is
applied to permanently valuable records that
have qualities and characteristics that make
the records in their original physical form the
only acceptable form for preservation.”

Digital Curators, what do they do? Create digital objects, receive digital objects, appraise and select digital objects, store and preserve digital objects, create ways to access and reuse digital objects. And they

Let’s do a little house keeping here and define what a digital object is… A digital object is a discoverable piece of media. That means it has to be retrievable in some way. We have to create information about the media could be a document, picture, audio or video file and link that information with that media to create a record and access to the object. This means creating a system that can tell us the: who, what, why, where and how of the object, this is a detailed and very time intensive process. This is like tagging on facebook, flikr, instagram (Show metadata, talk about different levels of metadata). Once that copy is made what happens to the original? One of the greatest challenges is keeping the objects stable. All objects suffer from what is known as inherent vice. Inherent vice is something that exists within the object that aids in or even accelerates the process of deterioration. Preserving the form or physical structure of an object requires a significant investment of both money and time. (Look at storage of an object and how it impacts the information, daguerreotype)
