Lord Howe Island Talia Miller
Introduction For my year 4 State and National park assignment I would like to tell you about an island, close to Australia. It has dolphins, sea birds and many more animals rare and common. This island is called Lord Howe Island – and I hope you will find it interesting.
Introduction (continued…) You will hear all about Lord Howe’s Location History Flora and fauna Its history and management And about it’s tourist activities.
Location Come to Lord Howe Island on Qantas Airlines! We will fly you in under two hours from Sydney. You will land at Lord Howe island – which is an old volcano. The island is just over 700 km North East of Sydney. You can wander and experience the 11km long, and between 2.8km and 600m wide island shores.
Flora and Fauna On this island you’ll be pleased to hear there are no snakes, venomous or stinging insects, and no sharks during the day. You can find 18 land bird species that breed on the island, and over 14 species of seabirds that nest on the island. Bird lovers from around the world come to Lord Howe Island to see the worlds rarest bird - the Woodhen. The island is also home to turtles, whales, coral, starfish, tunshells (also known as sea snails), lobsters, jellyfish, squid, Kingfish, and dolphins!
Island History The island was discovered by Europeans in 1788 by Lt Ball. It was named after Richard Howe, First Earl Howe, who was First Lord of the Admiralty at the time. The name was picked by Lt. Henry Lidgebird Ball - who also named a mountain after himself.. In 1834 three men were left to establish a supply station on the island. They would supply ships that were transferring goods between New Zealand and Sydney. Unofficial flag of Lord Howe Island
Island Management Before 1855, the British had official control of Lord Howe Island. In 1855, management of the island was passed to New South Wales Government. Today - the island is managed by the Lord Howe Island Board as part of New South Wales. There are seven people on the management board, including four from the island community. The board meets every three months on the island. The island itself has a population of 350 people.
Island Activities You can climb the tallest mountains on the island. The island also has rain forests, volcanic mountains, palm fronds and grasslands. You can go on bush walks, and can stay in lodges on the island. Other activities include swimming, snorkeling and going on boat rides around the island. You might also love to visit the many beaches on the island. You can also go bike riding, play golf and lawn bowls, tennis, surfing, and hand feed fish. For tourists that like to take a break there is a day spa and beauty facility.
Conclusion I’ve told you about Lord Howe Island Location Flora and fauna History and Management And Tourist Activities I hope you have enjoyed this talk and have found it interesting. Thank you
