7. Background on Louis Armstrong
Louis Armstrong was born on August 4, 1901, in New Orleans,
Louisiana.
He recorded several songs throughout his career, he is known
for songs like “Star Dust”, “La Vie En Rose”, and What a
Wonderful World”.
Beginning in 1919, Armstrong spent his summers playing on
riverboats with a band led by Fate Marable.
He died July 6, 1971.
I like Louis Armstrong because his songs are nice when I
listen to it.

9. Biography on Jelly Roll Morton
Morton was born Ferdinand Joseph Le Menthe in 1885 to a middle-class
Creole family on Frenchmen Street in New Orleans. By the time Jelly was in
his early twenties, he was an in-demand musician, playing the entire Gulf
Coast and West Coast. He created some of the most creative music that ever
emerged – tunes like “King Porter Stomp”, “New Orleans Blues,” “Kansas
City Stomp.”
Jelly Roll Morton died in 1941.

11. Background on Duke Ellington
He was born Edward Kennedy Ellington in Washington, D.C.
on April 29, 1899, into a middle-class black family.
Although he originally aspired to be a painter, Ellington became
interested in music in his early teens.
In 1923, he moved to New York and became a leader of his
band. Duke’s band was hired to play regularly at the Cotton
Club.
“Sophisticated Lady”, “Prelude to a Kiss”, “Don’t Get Around
Much Anymore”, and “Satin Doll” are some of his most
recognized songs.
Duke Ellington died on May 24, 1974.
