New Zealand Pacific Community
1. New Zealand Pacific Community
In 1993, this festival was set up in order to celebrate and promote the rich culture and
savagery of the Pacific people living in Aotearoa Pasifika news in NZ. These people take
pride in their identity and contribution to the nation.
In spite of the fact that the festival has evolved over its history and has included fashion
shows, theatre performances, a pop opera, and sports competitions, what has always
stayed the same is its focus on people.
Taking its inspiration from the Pasifika Festival, Taste of Pasifika puts an authentic Pacific
twist on what you know about the festival with a range of events taking place at venues
around TāmakiMakaurau Auckland.
A series of three weekends of performances, food, art, fashion, sport, wellness, and lots of
souls are part of Pasifika's three-weekend celebration of the vibrant cultures of 10 Pacific
nations.
Introducing the concept of a village in 1998, it was designed to reflect the diversity of Pacific
cultures and to ensure that the festival's cultural integrity would be maintained.
In 1994, the festival added a fashion component - 'Style Pasifika' — which gave the festival a
distinct, local style. In 2011, it had the pleasure of performing at the Rugby World Cup in
Auckland. This was part of a series of shows that were a huge success both nationally and
internationally.
In addition to being the world's largest festival of its kind, it is a reflection of how New
Zealand's Pasifika community has changed over the years.
Participants and audiences participate in the Pasifika Festival, which is a celebration of the
true spirit of the culture
Even with its close ties to the Pacific Island nations, the Pasifika peoples who call Aotearoa
home still maintain personal and cultural ties with Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue,
Tokelau, Tuvalu, and other Pacific Island nations.
A term used for identifying islands in the Pacific Ocean is "Pacific" or "Pacific peoples".
Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia are specifically included in these terms. There are a
number of Pasifika news in NZ, including immigrants, long-term residents, and native-born
New Zealanders.
There is also a great deal of overlap between the heritages and identities of Pasifika and
Pacific peoples that transcend their ethnic origins. In order to achieve equity and inclusivity
in the classroom, educators and leaders must recognize and respond to a diversity of
ethnicities and cultures.
Despite Wellington being the capital, Auckland is the most populous city in the country.
Pasifika festivals can be found across the country, but Western Springs Park, Auckland hosts
the largest one and runs from 18 to 20 March.
It's a must-see event featuring a star-studded line-up of performers, contemporary art
exhibitions, traditional crafts, and a journey to warmer climes with delicious island food, and
Dave Letele's 'Big Step Up' event will move you to shake every bit of your body.
2. Also included are Poly Movement and well-being sessions, talanoa and soul sessions, a day
of ‘Poly Movement’ and well-being.
There are additional events at Vodafone Events Centre, Auckland Zoo, and Lilyworld at Mt
Smart Stadium on the weekends of the 11th & 12th and 18th & 19th of June.
