1-) Read the text about Coca-Cola.

John Styth Pemberton first introduced the refreshing taste of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia. It was
May of 1886 when the pharmacist made a brown-colored syrup in a kettle in his backyard. He first
“distributed” the new product by carrying Coca-Cola in a jug down the street to Jacobs’ Pharmacy. For
five cents, consumers could enjoy a glass of Coca-Cola at the soda fountain. Carbonated water was
added to the new syrup, producing a drink that was proclaimed “Delicious and Refreshing.”
Dr. Pemberton’s partner and bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, suggested the name and wrote down
“Coca-Cola” in the handwriting that is famous worldwide today. Mr. Robinson thought that “the two C’s
would look well in advertising.” On May 29, 1886, the first newspaper advertisement, in The Atlanta
Journal, pronounced Coca-Cola “Delicious and Refreshing,” a slogan still used today.
In 1886, sales of Coca-Cola averaged nine drinks per day. That first year, Dr. Pemberton sold 100
liters of syrup, shipped in bright red wooden kegs. For this, Dr. Pemberton received $50 but spent $73.96
on advertising. Sadly Dr. Pemberton was never able to see how famous his drink would become as he
died in 1888.
By 1891, Asa G. Candler, an Atlanta entrepreneur, had acquired complete ownership of the Coca-
Cola business for $2,300. Within four years, he was selling Coca-Cola in every state in the country.
The trademark “Coca-Cola” was first registered 1893. Early advertising discouraged
calling the product “Coke” and urged customers to use the full name. But “Coke” was here to stay and
became a trademark in 1945.
In 1894, they opened the first manufacturing plant outside of Atlanta in Dallas, Texas. In following
years plants spread to Los Angeles and Chicago.

                                                                                                             1
Nome: n.º. ano: data: / /

In 1919, The Coca-Cola Company was sold to a group of investors for $25 million. Robert W.
Woodruff became president of The Coca-Cola Company in 1923, and his more than six decades of
leadership took the business to great commercial success, making Coca-Cola famous all over the world.

2-) Read the text:

The time you spend at school may be the most stressful part of your day, but it doesn’t have to be. You
have a greater ability to shape your class environment than you may realize. Manage your time better.
According to recent data — and most people’s experience — school time is expanding and leisure time is
disappearing, not only for top-level students but for the average ones as well. Most experts think that
organization is the key to managing time and avoiding stress. Follow their advice. Start by asking what
you really want for yourself, your family, and your career. Then, divide your time into manageable
portions. To help your schooldays go smoothly, try arranging your activities. Do more demanding work
in the morning, when your energy level is higher, and easier home work later in the day, when you may
be tired. Take breaks from studies during the day. It will clear your mind and relieve pressure. Something
as simple as going for a drink of water may help. Join a lunchtime or evening exercise class. This will
give you a chance to unwind and relieve stress. Try listening to music or special recordings, such as the
sound of the sea or birds singing, to help you relax. You can buy these cds in stores. You may be able to
do more when you change your routine.
                                                                      (Copyright © 2000 Reader’s Digest Association, Inc.)

DAYS AFTER MOTHER'S DEATH, OLYMPIC FIGURE SKATER PUSHES ON
Vancouver, British Columbia (CNN) — As 14,000 lumps formed in 14,000 throats, Joannie Rochette
took to the ice Tuesday night, just two days after her mother's shocking death.
She skated almost flawlessly, earning the third best score of the night in the Winter Olympics women's
figure skating short program. But the score really wasn't the most important thing to most people at
Pacific Coliseum.
“I watched her as she was about to skate and it looked like she was struggling emotionally,” said Bill
Thompson, chief executive officer of Skate Canada. “She just pulled herself together and put down a
performance that I think — where she came in is irrelevant — was so magical and so heroic.”
Rochette did not talk to the media after her skate, instead answering a few questions in private.
“I have no regrets,” she said, according to Michael Slipchuk, the high performance director for Team
Canada and a former Olympian. “It was a nice warm welcome [from the crowd]. It was hard to handle,
but I appreciate the support.”
Asked how she is feeling emotionally, she said, “Words cannot describe.”

1- ( ) Joannie Rochette was in shock after her mother’s death and it was impossible to compete.
2- ( ) She had a bad performance after receiving the sad news about her mother.
3- ( ) She could not explain her feelings.
4- ( ) The people in the crowd were sympathetic towards her.
5- ( ) She regrets not leaving the competition.

For this, Dr. Pemberton received $50 but spent $73.96 on advertising. Sadly Dr. Pemberton was never able to see how famous his drink would become as he died in 1888. By 1891, Asa G. Candler, an Atlanta entrepreneur, had acquired complete ownership of the Coca- Cola business for $2,300. Within four years, he was selling Coca-Cola in every state in the country. The trademark “Coca-Cola” was first registered 1893. Early advertising discouraged calling the product “Coke” and urged customers to use the full name. But “Coke” was here to stay and became a trademark in 1945. In 1894, they opened the first manufacturing plant outside of Atlanta in Dallas, Texas. In following years plants spread to Los Angeles and Chicago. 1

You have a greater ability to shape your class environment than you may realize. Manage your time better. According to recent data — and most people’s experience — school time is expanding and leisure time is disappearing, not only for top-level students but for the average ones as well. Most experts think that organization is the key to managing time and avoiding stress. Follow their advice. Start by asking what you really want for yourself, your family, and your career. Then, divide your time into manageable portions. To help your schooldays go smoothly, try arranging your activities. Do more demanding work in the morning, when your energy level is higher, and easier home work later in the day, when you may be tired. Take breaks from studies during the day. It will clear your mind and relieve pressure. Something as simple as going for a drink of water may help. Join a lunchtime or evening exercise class. This will give you a chance to unwind and relieve stress. Try listening to music or special recordings, such as the sound of the sea or birds singing, to help you relax. She skated almost flawlessly, earning the third best score of the night in the Winter Olympics women's figure skating short program. But the score really wasn't the most important thing to most people at Pacific Coliseum. “I watched her as she was about to skate and it looked like she was struggling emotionally,” said Bill Thompson, chief executive officer of Skate Canada. “She just pulled herself together and put down a performance that I think — where she came in is irrelevant — was so magical and so heroic.” Rochette did not talk to the media after her skate, instead answering a few questions in private. “I have no regrets,” she said, according to Michael Slipchuk, the high performance director for Team Canada and a former Olympian. “It was a nice warm welcome [from the crowd]. It was hard to handle, but I appreciate the support.” Asked how she is feeling emotionally, she said, “Words cannot describe.” 1- ( ) Joannie Rochette was in shock after her mother’s death and it was impossible to compete. 2- ( ) She had a bad performance after receiving the sad news about her mother. 3- ( ) She could not explain her feelings. 4- ( ) The people in the crowd were sympathetic towards her. 5- ( ) She regrets not leaving the competition. 5-) Complete the sentences using the correct comparative form of the words given: good clever patient sensitive difficult bad funny small 1- My new boyfriend makes me laugh.
