London Vs Sydney: Which City Is
Better?
I live in London whenever I’m not travelling, and I’ve lived in
Sydney for two years.
I love both cities.
But, which city is better?
Both cities are economic hubs, globally important cities, home to
world-famous attractions, an excellent standard of living, and
marvellous things to do. London is home to over nine million
people, and Sydney is home to 5.4 million people.
2. Despite their similarities — including a common language — both
cities are different. Let’s compare and contrast these two cities:
1. Economy

London and Sydney both have huge economies. In terms of overall
GDP, they’re both pretty equal. Sydney is — without a doubt —
easier to live in because the wages are higher, especially in menial
jobs.
In contrast, Sydney doesn’t compare to London’s economic
diversity. London is a genuine rival to New York City. It’s a hub of
media, finance, arts, entertainment, real estate, and law. Sydney,
4. despite its wealth, doesn’t have a broad economy, especially in the
arts and media.
London has more international economic influence. As a result, the
city attracts more talent, better career opportunities, and more
international companies. For starters, London has more American
banks than New York City.
Both cities offer incredible opportunities for their people. That said,
London wins because of its global economic influence, immense
financial services industry, and media influence.

2. Weather

Sydney’s weather is far superior to London’s. When
people think of London — mainly those who’ve never lived
there — they think of rain. That’s an incorrect assumption.
London is reasonably dry compared to many cities.
What’s more, London has half of the annual rain of
Sydney and New York City. Unfortunately, London is
gloomy most of the year. As I write this article from my
6. London bedroom, I can see grey November skies. It is
November, after all.
But there’s one problem — I haven’t felt prolonged sun
since I last traveled internationally. The United Kingdom’s
gloomy weather is a shame. It’s the only downside of an
otherwise terrific country.
Sydney’s weather is fantastic almost all year round. The
summer is hot, almost too hot at times, especially with the
ridiculous humidity. Sydney’s winters are fabulous.
Winters barely drop below 15 degrees celsius, and you can
hardly see a cloud in the sky for 85% of the winter.

3. Lifestyle

This is a challenging choice, but I’m going to have to go
with Sydney. Although London has more to offer as a city,
Sydney has a combination of sunshine, outdoor lifestyle,
and relaxation.
London does, however, have excellent parks and green
spaces. During the summer, London’s parks are incredible
8. places to relax with your family and friends. But London
can’t compete with Sydney’s hikes, beaches, and national
parks.
If you want to experience nature in London, you’ll
probably have to book a cheap flight to Europe. You can
hike on England’s South Coast. Seaford to Eastbourne is a
terrific hike, and it’s only 90 minutes from London via
train.
Sydney is a dream for anyone who loves the outdoor
lifestyle. Most women wear gym clothes daily, even if
they’re not working out in the gym. Sydneysiders are
hard-wired — largely thanks to the excellent weather — to
be constantly active. It’s a fantastic outdoor lifestyle.

4. Culture

London beats Sydney with ease here. Although Sydney is a
highly cosmopolitan city, it doesn’t compete with
London’s diversity. London is genuinely a world city with
people from every nation imaginable.
London is the most linguistically diverse city on the
planet, with over 300 global languages spoken. London is
10. home to the O2 Arena, the world’s most popular music
venue with 22,000 music performances yearly.
London offers more live comedy than any other city in the
world, has four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and
London is home to three of the top ten museums and art
galleries worldwide. London has 250 festivals every year,
800 bookshops, and 170 museums.
As much as London can’t compete with Sydney’s glorious
weather, Sydney certainly can’t match London’s cultural
significance or diversity.

5. Shopping

London beats Sydney here with absolute comfort. Sydney
has some excellent shops, but its retail industry pales in
significance compared to London. In fact, most Aussies
bemoan the bad shopping options in Sydney.
In contrast, London rivals New York City, Paris, and
Tokyo for shopping. London’s West End is home to
various world-class shopping streets, including Regent
12. Street, Oxford Street, and Bond Street. Each street is —
without a doubt — in the top ten shopping streets
worldwide.
Many people regard Oxford Street as the world’s number
one shopping street over Fifth Avenue, New York City.
Oxford Street is Europe’s busiest shopping street with
over half a million daily visits. London is also home to
Harrods, one of the world’s most famous luxury stores.
The West End feels like the center of the world’s shopping
market. Sydney doesn’t have anything that remotely
matches. Consequently, it’s probably more on par with
Manchester, England for shopping.

6. Entertainment and Nightlife

Again, I adore Sydney, but it doesn’t beat London here.
London is home to Wimbledon tennis, Wembley Stadium,
Lords Cricket Ground, 7 English Premier League teams,
and it’s the only city to have hosted the Olympics three
times. For sporting entertainment, London wins hands
down.
14. London beats Sydney for artistic entertainment. London’s
West End rivals New York City’s Broadway for theatre
performances, and although Sydney has excellent
concerts, London is the primary destination for musicians
touring Europe.
Sydney’s nightlife is pretty awful. A mixture of strict
drinking laws and government regulations has spoiled
Sydney’s nightlife. It’s the most regulated nightlife I’ve
witnessed, and that’s a tremendous contradiction
compared to the city’s carefree lifestyle.
London’s nightlife is world class, and you can enjoy it until
the early hours. Unfortunately, Sydney’s remote location
means it struggles to place itself on the global
entertainment map in sports or music.
London 4–2 Sydney
15. 7. Food
Photo by Road Trip with Raj on Unsplash
This is a tie for me. Both cities have diverse populations
and restaurants that match that. Sydney is better for Asian
food because it has more immigration from Southeast
Asia because of its proximity. That said, London also has
excellent Japanese, Thai, and Korean food.
16. Sydney has better food quality. You’ll find better fruit and
vegetables in Sydney for a similar price. However, Sydney
doesn’t match London for African cuisine and Middle
Eastern food. Sydney’s African population is tiny, whereas
London has a massive African population.
The belief that the United Kingdom has poor food isn’t
true in London. The cosmopolitan nature of London
means you’ll find any cuisine, and the city has 66
Michelin-starred restaurants.
London 4–2 Sydney
Final Thoughts
London is the better city.
London is regularly voted the world’s number one city,
and it’s only the only city other than New York City to have
an Alpha++ rating for global influence.
17. But the lifestyle, weather, and general beauty of Sydney
are incredible.
Unfortunately, in this article, Sydney was going up against
Europe’s largest city and a global hub that rivals New York
City and Tokyo
