A number of contacts have messaged me recently asking for
more information about a Harvard degree, no SAT or GRE
required. The answer is: Harvard Extension School.
Here is the link: http://www.extension.harvard.edu/
In brief, here are the requirements:
* Take three (3) courses. Earn a GPA of B, minimum. One course
must be EXPO 25 Academic Writing and Critical Reading.
* Apply to a BA or MA program.
* Pass the online Academic Integrity tutorials.
* Maintain an undergraduate GPA of at least C; graduate, B.
* A minimum TOEFL score of 100 is required. If you don’t have a
TOEFL score of at least 100, don’t panic: There are ways to earn a
100 while you study your first three classes at Harvard.
* Transfer students can transfer 64 of 128 undergrad credits.
* For the BA, four (4) courses must be taken on the Harvard
campus. The others, some 28 courses, can be taken online or on
campus, or in a combination of online and campus classes.
Tuition
Here is where you will earn significant value in addition to your
Harvard degree: you will save a boatload of money.
Undergraduate tuition at Harvard is $43,938 per year in 2015. If
you live on campus, Room and Board will cost $14,669 in 2015.
That sums to $58,607 yearly, or $234,428 over four (4) years. And
costs go up every year.
The cost of a Harvard BA degree from the Extension School is
approximately the cost of one year’s tuition at Harvard College.
And value is essential
Tuition for each course is about $1,250 (that’s about $300 per credit). With no
transfer credit, you can earn the entire bachelor’s degree for about $42,000.
There are also financial aid options available.
The info directly above is from this link:
http://www.extension.harvard.edu/degrees-
programs/undergraduate-degree
Tuition for MA degrees:
Tuition that’s affordable
Graduate-credit tuition is $2,200 a course. In total, tuition is roughly $27,000.
After you are admitted, financial aid options are available.
http://www.extension.harvard.edu/degrees-
programs/management
Of course, your costs will rise due to the requirement for four (4)
on-campus classes. Also, your costs will rise if, like other
students, you move to the Boston-Cambridge area to attend the
Extension School full-time, and to take advantage of Harvard
resources. But the fact remains that, studying online, you can
earn a BA from Harvard Extension School for a fraction of the
cost of tuition plus living expenses at Harvard College, or an MA
from Harvard University.
Extension School: benefits
In addition to a Harvard degree at much lower cost, you can take
all your classes with Harvard professors. You can benefit from
many Harvard resources, and – after you are admitted – financial
aid options. When you finish your degree, you will march in the
same graduation ceremony as all the other graduating Harvard
students, thus earning Lian 臉 + Mianzi 面子 for yourself, your
parents and your grandparents.
Be warned: it’s demanding
The Harvard Extension School is very rigorous. I know this from
personal experience because I studied Marketing there 1991-
1992. I was working full-time, so I figured I would take one
course per term, and devote every Saturday to study. I was
wrong. To earn top scores and stay at the head of the class, I
studied all day Saturday, all day Sunday, and often Monday
evenings. My Global Marketing professor told me I wrote the
best Case Studies in the class of 45-50 students – but he gave me
only an A- for a final score!
Plus it’s super competitive. Most of the students are young
professionals who are highly motivated. For example, one of my
classmates earned his BA degree from Harvard Extension
School; he then went on to graduate Harvard Law School.
Special note:
Harvard Extension School does not issue the I-20 required for an
F-1 student visa. Harvard Summer School does issue the I-20.
The F-1 is now good for multiple entries over 5-10 years, thus
international students will have plenty of time to fulfill the
requirement for four (4) on-campus classes, or even to study full-
time at Harvard.
