2. Non-Communicable Diseases
These are diseases that are not passed from one person to another.
Most non communicable diseases are deficiency diseases
Some deficiency disease are night blindness, beriberi, scurvy, rickets,
goitre and anaemia.
3. Night blindness
• Night blindness is caused by the deficiency of vitamin A. In night
blindness, the patient cannot see in dim light. To prevent or to
eradicate it, vitamin A rich food should be eaten. Green leafy
vegetables, mango, papaya, tomato, milk, butter, fish and egg yolk are
rich sources of vitamin A.
4. Beriberi
• Beriberi is a disease caused by the deficiency of vitamin B1. Vitamin B
is present in unpolished rice, milk, meat, peas, cereals and green leafy
vegetables.
5. Scurvy
• Scurvy is caused by the deficiency of vitamin C. bleeding of gums and
swollen of joints result from scurvy. Vitamin C is present in citrus
fruits, amla, tomato, green leafy vegetables, potato, sprouted grsins
and pulses
6. Rickets
• Rickets is caused by the deficiency of vitamin D. In this disease, bones
becomes soft. Vitamin D along with the minerals calcium and
phosphorus, makes bones and teeth hard and strong. Calcium is
present in milk products.
7. Goitre
• Goitre is caused by the deficiency of iodine. The gland in the neck
[Thyroid gland] swells. Iodine is present in iodized salt and seafood.
8. Anaemia
• Anaemia is caused by the deficiency of iron. The haemoglobin in
blood becomes low. So the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood
reduces. Iron is present in apples, dates, bananas, guavas, spinach,
brinjal, pulses, jaggery, meat and fish liver.
