1. Beacon in New York
Empowering students with learning disabilities and ADHD
At Beacon College, we’re used to breaking the mold and changing the model. Even with
an exceptional 83% record of postgraduate employment and advanced study, we wanted
to offer our students something more. Beacon College is the only accredited four-year
college that offers BA degrees exclusively tostudents with learning disabilities, ADHD
and high functioning autism.
Our Beacon in New York program is designed to provide our students with the same rich
opportunities that students experience in larger universities and colleges. The program
is for a four-week period in which the students will be exposed to appropriate
opportunities in the workforce. Although similar to an internship, our program uses the
term “field experience” as field experiences allow a student to observe and document
how working professionals perform their job responsibilities. Students will
also participate, to a limited extent, in performing tasks under supervision on-site. The
appropriate businesses will provide opportunities in the fields of web & digital media,
studio arts, human services, hospitality or business management.
Our Beacon in New York program is searching for the right partner that will benefit
from working with a diversity supplier of college-educated young adults. Companies
have restructured their recruiting methods to include the search for those with
disabilities to fulfill their Disability Index. Other companies are looking to expand the
diversity among their employees. Our college has a unique and important mission to
meet the needs of an underserved population that are intelligent but learn differently.
