MediaQ is a novel online media management system that allows users to collect, organize, share, and search user-generated mobile images and videos. It provides real-time situational awareness during disasters by obtaining information from crowdsourced content. The team upgraded the Android app to allow image uploads in addition to videos. They implemented a metadata first mechanism where only metadata is initially uploaded, and developed push notifications using Google Cloud Messaging. A video demo was presented to showcase these contributions to the MediaQ project.
3. WHAT IS MEDIAQ
• MediaQ is a novel online media management system to collect,
organize, share and search user-generated mobile images and
videos by the public.
• What we have learnt
• Geospatial multimedia indexing, analyzing, and searching
• GeoSpatial CrowdSourcing
• Request somebody, somewhere to help you take a video or
picture
6. MEDIAQ FOR DISASTER
RESPONSE
• Obtaining real-time information to enhance
situational awareness during and after
disaster
• Prioritize data collection with limited
transmission
7. UPLOAD METADATA FIRST
• Hold video in the device and have server
ping the device when it wants the owner to
upload the video
• Real-time acquisition of metadata via
Internet, SMS, WLAN
• Size of metadata is thousands times
smaller than content
• Real-time analysis on the uploaded
metadata, e.g., visualization
8. OUR CONTRIBUTIONS
• Upgraded Android App
• Besides videos, upload images
• Developed metadata first mechanism
• Implemented Push Notification using
Google Cloud Messaging
MediaQ is a online management system to collect, organize, and search real-time multimedia and geospatial information. Just like youtube you can upload the videos,
yet more powerful as it contains geospatial information.
We learned a lot of course materials in this project, including how to index geospatial information, and geospatial crowdsourcing like task assignment and scheduling.
MediaQ is a big project involving a lot of people, application system, research ideas.
All the components need to always work together, and new features need to be built on top of the old ones without breaking functionality. It is definitely a great experience yet it is also very challenging.
We work with info lab, which is lead by professor shahabi and other professor
To work with a real world project is quite different from designing a new experience from scratch. All the components need to always work together, and new features need to be built on top of the old ones without breaking functionality. It is definitely a great experience yet it is also very challenging.
We spent a lot time to realize the system mechanism and communicate with people response for different parts.
They are very helpful and kind.

This is one major function of MediaQ . Provide realtime information while disaster happened
Now, the focus of mediaQ is about collecting data, especially for disaster response. When disaster happens, we want to know where and when the disaster happens in real time manner; however, the multimedia files are usually very big, and the internet or 3G services might be interrupted by the disaster, so we want to upload the metadata first, so that we can reach prioritization of data collection.

To improve the speed of data collecting while disaster happen.
We implement the metadata first mechanism
What is Metadata? Metadata contains the field of view. Which is a series of information including location, direction, and viewable distance and angle at each timestamp of the video or photo. Such information is very small compared to the file content, and you can even send it through SMS
That’s mean while user record a video or picture. the app will automatically upload the metadata.
We mainly contribute for three function in MediaQ Android version.
First is add the picture taking funciton. Now it works good as video taking.
The second one this metadata first mechanism. Just as we just mentioned. Once users taken the video or picture.
Our MediaQ will automatically upload the metadata to server and others people could see and request the content if they interest in it. And we will sent the push notification to the video holder

Black icon with desh lines shows files with only metadata in the server but content is still in the client phone
Red icon shows files with both content and metadata
Explain how we can distinguish files with/out content and request metadata
In this way, the files at interesting locations or important locations can be requested and uploaded on demand
Not only uploading the metadata, the client also register their device ID on server. Then the server keep track all client's ID and use it to distinguish each device.
So when user want to participate with video which is not upload yet, the server is able to sent the notification to the content owner, asking them upload the real data
