Organicmanures, its importance , classification and
properties
2. Organic manures
The word manure derived from the French
"Manoeuvrer', means to manipulate, to work, to
produce crop
Manures are substances which are organic in nature,
capable of supplying plant nutrients in available
form
3. Organic manures classification'
Bulky in nature, having the low analytical value and
having no definite composition
Derived from animal and plant residues
A. Bulky organic manure
1. Compost
a.Village compost
b. Town compost (made from town waste products)
4. Organic manures
2. Farmyard manure (FYM)
a.Cattle manure
b.Sheep penning
c. Poulty manure
3. Sewage and Sludge
5. Organic manures classification'
B. Green manure (GM)
a.Leguminous plant
b.Non-leguminous plant
C. Oil Cake: Richest source of plant nutrients of all organic manures
1. Edible cake (used for cattle feeding)
a.Mustard oil cake
b.Groundnut oil cake
c. Linseed oil cake d. Sesame oil cake
2. Non-edible cake (used as manures)
a.Castor cake
b.Neem cake
c. Sunflower cake
6. Organic manures
D. Waste product of slaughter house
1.Blood meal
2.Bone meal
E.Fish products Fish meal
F.Guano
Material obtained from the excreta and dead bodies of sea
birds
10. Effect
ofvorganjcxnanures on soil
prOductivigy
(A) Physical properties
Improvethe soil structure, water holding
capacity, aggregates and porosity
Decreases the bulk density and soil compaction
Improves the aeration, water
movement, hydraulic conductivity of
soil Decreases the
soil temperature
Prevents the surface and subsurface crusting of
soil
11. (B) Chemical properties
Supplies all the essential nutrients Improves
the CEC of soil
Improves the buffering capacity of soil
Increases the colloidal properties of soil
Solubilize the fixed nutrients and
make them available to the crop
12. (C) Biological properties
โข Increases the activity and population of
microorganisms
โขOrganic acids and organic anions are formed e
Increases the fixation of N
by enhancing symbiotic and non-symbiotic
N fixing organisms Solubilize the insoluble
P by activating the P
solubilizing microorganisms
โขOrganic manures supply food for the soil micro
and macro-organisms
13. โข Fortified organics enriching the organic
manures with inorganic fertilizer nutrients and
biofertilizers are called fortification
โข Increase crop yields by giving plants the
nutrients they need while protecting the soil
โข It is also known as fortified
composting
โข Eg. Sugarcane trash compost,
compost, enriched FYM etc.
