17. But where and how can I find ideas?
1. Special Issues (SI) in journals in your field – even if you lost the deadline, if
it is an SI in a top journal, it means it is very relevant and timely!!!
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 17
1.1 Search on google “special issue” + “keyword” or “call for paper” + “keyworkd”
1.2 Newsletter from journals
1.3 Social media!
1.4 Dataset on SI (e.g., https://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/services/authors/calls-for-papers)
However, remember to look at the level of the journal!!!
18. But where and how can I find ideas?
2. Suggestions for future research in published papers in your field – be
careful, the authors may work on them as well.
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 18
2.1 Have a look at recent literature review on a topic
2.2 Limitations/suggestions from papers
Lamine, W., Miane, S., Fayolle, A., Wright, M., Klofsten, M., & Etzkowitz, H. (2018).
Technology business incubation mechanisms and sustainable regional development. The
Journal of Technology Transfer, 43(5), 1121–1141.
Although this study provides some interesting findings, some limitations should be
noted. The samples are based on only one country. Future research could be
conducted to analyze the taxonomy and the definition of Social Incubators in different
countries.
Sansone, G., Andreotti, P., Colombelli, A., & Landoni, P. (2020). Are social incubators
different from other incubators? Evidence from Italy. Technological Forecasting and Social
Change, 158, 120132.
19. But where and how can I find ideas?
3. Go out from your«virtual» room and from journals only
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 19
3.1Talk with practitioners in your field, talk with colleagues, students, go on social media networks (usually, star researchers have a
lot of ideas – go and work with them!), videos on youtubes,TedX, etc…
3.2 Go to conferences, go to seminars (list of good conference: https://aom.org/; https://euram.academy/; https://www.bam.ac.uk/;
IPDMC conference; RENT conference; R&D Management Conference; CINet conference; BABSON conference;
https://www.strategicmanagement.net/conf/; https://www.ifkad.org/; druid conference; https://www.eiasm.net/ )
3.3 Have a look at recent Reports and White papers etc, e.g., https://home.kpmg/xx/en/home/insights.html;
https://www2.deloitte.com/global/en/insights/topics/strategy.html?icid=top_strategy; https://www.pwc.com/gx/en/research-

https://www.worldbank.org/en/research ; https://socialimpact.wharton.upenn.edu/research-reports/ ; https://www.weforum.org/ ;
https://mindthebridge.com/research/
3.4 Read business press (e.g., Wall street journal, Forbes, Business Insider)
20. But where and how can I find ideas?
4. Listen Editors and Journals
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 20
4.1 Podcast from Editors in good journals: e.g., https://entrepreneurship-erd.com/podcast/editors-e3-
maura-mc-adam-associate-editor/
4.2 Follow Editors and “tech influencers” on social media, e.g., https://www.linkedin.com/in/aonetti/
4.3 Insights from journals such as:
https://managementstudiesinsights.com/?fbclid=IwAR3w_Iym_0iitnpqWEXAaBm24Jqaho99hLHYEEdm
e9q-uSPC8H96p9I_zNQ
21. However…
Everything sounds amazing at first → usually, the problem is not
idea generation and discovery but idea development.
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 21
24. 1. Are you able to measure what you want to do?
– Suggestion: look at international open datasets instead of «private» datasets
2. Do you know the methodology for developing the idea?
3. What theory are you applying? → look at other fields of study as well
4. Feedbacks from your colleagues!!!
Short video: https://youtu.be/6mEmJqa9-xU
Selection criteria
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 24
25. 1. Where?
1. Literature:
1. look at papers that apply theories and how they apply them!
2. there are papers on theories, they summaries the theories applied in a field or they suggest
how to apply and develop a theory, e.g., https://doi.org/10.1177/26317877211020328 ;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-R4BJ5YGSTQ ; https://doi.org/10.5465/amr.2019.0294
2. Internet: there are several libraries of theories, e.g., https://is.theorizeit.org/wiki/Main_Page
2. How?
1. You can apply theories to any kind of research!
Suggestion: when you find a theory and you understand how to apply it, ask one of your colleague if it
makes sense!
Theories… no theory no party!
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 25
26. 1. Human CapitalTheory in quantitative research
1. Human CapitalTheory: background of people: e.g., education (bachelor, master, etc)
and work experiences (yes or not, industry, etc)
2. Example: Understand if education and of the prior work experience of founders impact
the performance of startups: Colombo, M. G., & Grilli, L. (2005). Founders’ human
capital and the growth of new technology-based firms: A competence-based view.
Research policy, 34(6), 795-816.
Application of theory example
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 26
27. 1. The idea is nice and timely
2. You may have the data
3. You may have a theory to apply (find the theory first!)
4. You have time (or you may find it!)
5. Have good co-authors (if possible; however, I suggest one single-author publication in your
career)
Go for it only if…
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 27
28. Do not feel in love on your ideas too early! If none says that it is a good idea, do not
waste your time on it. Go for another one!
Suggestion
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 28
30. 1. Data collection
2. Data cleaning and understanding
3. Data analysis
4. Writing and re-writing
Data and writing
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 30
31. Two methods
Primary data methods: surveys, interviews, focus groups, etc
Secondary data methods: financial reports, internet, social media, etc
Best way: use both!
Also here, ask for and give feedbacks to colleagues (win-win!)
Data collection – it is a long process!
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 31
32. Get data by collaborating with a company!
Data collection – it is a long process!
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 32
33. It depends on your work
▪ Importing data and merging data
▪ Checking missing data
▪ Checking outliers
▪ Verification and enrichment
IMPORTANT: Save and make your final dataset easier to understand for everyone! You may
receive a review after one year (yes, it happened to me!) where they ask you to make some
changes in the dataset. After one year, you won’t remember well your dataset and analyses!
Data cleaning
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 33
34. Data understanding
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 34
Possible solutions:
1. Big dataset: difficult to make “voluntary” differences
2. Open-access dataset: everyone can access it and test your analyses!
1. N.B.You do not “lose” time on data collection and verification, they did it for you!
35. Open-access dataset: where can I find them?
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 35
1. You are a researcher: do research! -> usually European Commission, World Bank, etc..
2. Literature on your topic
3. Working-in-progress from Google similar to Google Scholar on dataset:
https://datasetsearch.research.google.com/
37. Just a few suggestions:
1. Read a lot of recent papers on top journals in order to understand how to write
1. Suggestion: set up alerts on google scholar regarding your topic, link
2. Do not write too much, nowadays journals prefer shorter manuscripts
3. Cite only “good” level of journals (if possible)
4. Present your working-process in at least one international conference!
1. Conferences allow you to receive feedback, understand the quality of your work, improve your
network and your CV
Suggestion reading: https://doi.org/10.5465/amd.2021.0017 ; https://doi.org/10.1007/s11187-021-00518-0
Writing
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 37
38. Write an “Acknowledgement” section in the “title page” of your manuscript
– Feedbacks from your colleagues
– Conferences, seminars, etc
Write this also in the Cover letter
It shows to the Editor that you asked some feedback and that your work has been accepted in a
conference!
Suggestion
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 38
40. 1. Journal reputation
1. Journal Citation Reports (Clarivate Impact Factors), link
2. ABS/AJG list, link
3. FinancialTimesTop 50 list, link
Thinking carefully about where to: Do not follow spam emails!!!
As always: ask for feedbacks to your colleagues!!!
Journal selection
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 40
41. 1. Look at the raking of the journals
1. If some journals have the same ranking and you cite works from these journals, look at
their impact factor and their time of publication (e.g., days from submission to
acceptance even if they are on average!)
2. Look at your citations!
Suggestion: try higher-ranking journals first and then go down
How do I pick the right journal?
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 41
42. Look at the Guide for Authors online of that journal
E.g.:
Before to submit
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 42
44. Before to submit
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 44
Read them!!!
45. 1. Desk reject
2. Reject after revision
3. Major revision
4. Minor revision
5. Accept
Feedbacks on your work
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 45
46. 1. Limited knowledge of relevant literature, especially what has been
2. Already published something similar
3. Unimportant issue (the so what, who cares questions)
4. Inappropriate methodology
5. No theoretical contribution!
6. Unfamiliar with the journal → Read published papers on that journal before to submit there!
Rejections… main reasons
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 46
47. 1. The Editor‘s letter is very important!
2. Everything is important to some degree
3. Do your best to do everything the Editor and the Reviewers are asking!
4. It takes a lot of time!!!
Revisions…
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 47
48. Better to have at least one published papers before, so you know the process
Do not be a reviewer for bad journals!!! (look at the journal ranking)
How to be a reviewer?
1. Write to the editor of the journal
2. You get an invitation
When you do the revisions, be polite and try to do everything they ask for.
If it’s your first time, ask colleagues to show you some of their revision process.
Suggestions: look at this video to understand how to perform a review:
https://www.elsevier.com/connect/reviewers-update/how-to-review-manuscripts;
https://www.sciencemag.org/careers/2016/09/how-review-paper;
https://authorservices.taylorandfrancis.com/publishing-your-research/writing-your-paper/how-to-write-
review-article/#
You as a reviewer
FACULTYOF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, PRAGUE UNIVERSITYOF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS 48
49. 1. Have different papers at each stage of the research process (conceptual; data collection;
drafting; in first review; R&R).
2. Adopt a portfolio mentality.
3. Accept that the role of chance will both help and hurt you at some stage.
1. 2-3 years to get publish in a good journal
2. Do not never write aggressive emails to none! Be always super polite and wait at least 6
months to write an email to the journal… As always, ask for feedbacks to your
colleagues!
