M&S is one of the UK’s leading retailers employing over 78,000 people in the UK and abroad, they have over 700 UK stores, plus
an expanding international business.
The Challenge
As a result of their five-year eco plan, Plan A, M&S commissioned Helistrat in 2009 to help deliver their challenging target of
audited zero waste to landfill by 2012.
Our Solution
Helistrat started by examining the end-to-end process prior to re-engineering it. Stringent audit controls were then implemented to
ensure 100% genuine zero waste to landfill. The key was changing the way people thought and worked. Through a thorough
programme of staff training and by paying attention to detail, identifying issues and providing creative solutions to any barriers, a
new way of working was embedded in M&S.
The Outcome
Waste collections were consolidated from 492 stores and 22 distribution centres, reducing the M&S Carbon Footprint by 700,000
tonnes of C02e. 52,700 tonnes of food, cardboard, plastic and paper was diverted from landfill in 11 months. The 2012 vision of
0% to landfill was delivered almost a year ahead of schedule.

The Customer
Ann Summers is a British multinational retailer specialising in sex toys and lingerie. In 2000 Ann Summers acquired the Knickerbox
brand with its emphasis on comfortable and feminine underwear as a counter point to the more overtly sexual style of the Ann
Summers brand. In 2011-2012 the chain had a turnover of £117.7 million and included 147 stores.
The Challenge
The waste from the 147 UK stores is substantial and by 2010 it had become a significant administrative burden that was costing
the company time and money while diverting management resource away from the core business.
Our Solution
Helistrat presented a total, end-to-end waste management solution that improved service levels, increased recycling to 95% and
reduced operational costs.
The Outcome
In November 2012 Ann Summer’s HQ, Gold Group House, was taken zero to landfill. The partnership between Ann Summers and
Helistrat continues to grow and Helistrat is now looking to turn waste from a cost into a revenue.
