Streamside LLC develops sediment removal and water treatment technologies to address sedimentation issues and improve water quality. Their flagship product is the patented Sand Wand system, a manually operated suction device that selectively removes fine sediments from gravel streams, restoring habitats. They have completed over 75 projects across the US and Canada. Additional technologies include a sediment collector to prevent further sedimentation and an Airy Gator floating water treatment platform that circulates water to introduce additives.

2. Where did
we start
What began as a solution to a
fisherman’s problem, has
evolved, over the years, into a
series of unique & proprietary
technologies to address
sedimentation across the country.
Our goal is to ensure
generations to come can live by,
swim in and fish on our most
precious natural resource – our
rivers and streams.

5. The issue
Sedimentation is the primary
water quality and habitat
impact in rivers, streams,
ponds, canals & estuaries.
Dredging, digging or other
mechanical efforts will either
miss much of the harmful
material, or will unselectively
remove the desirable coarser
habitat materials, and can
thereby aggravate the
environmental damage.
6. Traditional
methods
▸ Excavation and use of heavy
equipment
▸ Vac truck
▸ Hydraulic suction dredging
▸ Venturi suction dredging
▸ Flushing/jetting
7. Unique approach
Streamside specializes in the
restoration of sediment
impacted habitats using our
patented Sand Wand™
technology. The system is
manually operated, and
involves a combination of
variable water jet and suction
removal, to selectively remove
fine sediments from the
surface and subsurface of
gravel and cobble streams.
9. Benefits
▸ Low-impact & minimally invasive
to riparian area
▸ Restores sediment-impacted
habitat
▸ Restores spawning habitat, to
improve spawning success and
recruitment
▸ Poses no significant risk to
aquatic resources
▸ Ability to work with limited or
remote access
11. Minimal impact
Alternative methods require
heavy machinery and large
staging areas that adversely
effects the area surrounding
the river.
Our small footprint does not
only satisfy mother nature, it
also allows us to access
remote areas and perform
restoration services on smaller
rivers & streams.
12. ▸ Removal of silts & sediment to
restore impacted habitats
▸ Removal of contaminated
sediment, to prevent downstream
migration of impacts
▸ Restoration of spawning habitats
▸ Removal of sediment in boat slips
& marinas to maintain navigation
▸ Stream restoration in remote
areas or locations with minimal
access
▸ Emergency response sediment
removal
Applications
13. Dramatic results
After a Sand Wand™ restoration
up to 12” of material can be
removed from the interstitial
areas, exposing gravel & cobble
(when present).
14. Before & After
Results may vary depending
on type of river, or body of
water cleaning, but results can
be as drastic as this picture.
The gravel is cleaned down 8”
into the substrate and will
reduce growth of aquatic
vegetation due to minimizing
sedimentation and silts.
16. Discharge methods
Once the material has been
removed, it is pumped to a
discharge location. There are
various discharge discharge
options and varies depending
on project type.
The method is determined by
site-specific details including
access/distance to disposal
areas, transportation, volume
of material, particle size
removed, and potential value
of material.
17. Discharge Methods
Dewatering Pit
Dewatering pits are the preferred discharge
method. These pits are temporary and
excavated in upland areas. They allow the water
to percolate into the ground and the material to
remain in the pits. The material can either be
removed and hauled away or back-filled and
graded into the original state.
18. Discharge Methods.
Land Application
Land application provides a low cost discharge
solution. Straw bales, silt fence or other storm
water prevention material will act as a barrier to
contain the material while the water will percolate
into the ground. This method is not applicable for
the removal of contaminated or harmful materials.
Discharge Methods
Dewatering bags
Dewatering bags can be utilized in urban settings
or on sites with limited access for alternative
methods. Dewatering bags are made of filter
fabric which allows the water to percolate and
retains material. They require minimal equipment
and are easy to use.
19. Discharge Methods.
Settling basin
Settling basins area designed to collect suspended
stream sediments. The discharge slurry enters the
basin and very fine particles in the water
are separated by means of gravity. Water can then
be processed through a filtration process (chitosan)
to return to water body or hauled away via truck.
Discharge Methods
Haul away
This method is primarily used when removing
contaminated or harmful materials. The discharge
slurry is pumped directly into the tanker truck and
hauled away to a destination offsite.
20. Proven
Results
The initial test site showed
an 89% reduction of sand
and silts and follow-up
sampling shoes almost
double the trout population
the following year.

23. Address the
source
A Sediment Collector can be
installed and used a a prevention
method to ensure that
sedimentation does not further
impact a site and can also protect
restoration efforts performed by
the Sand Wand.
25. How it
works
Sediment Collectors
allow the energy of the
stream to move
bedload sediment up
the ramp and into a
hopper. As the
sediment fills the
hopper, it is pumped to
a dewatering or
disposal site.
26. Improving
water quality
The patent pending Airy Gator
Treatment System was
developed to circulate millions of
gallons of water per day in
directed flows.
The treatment platform provides
a method to introduce additives
or media to remediate and
improve water quality.
27. Design &
operation
The Airy-Gator is a floating
treatment platform that consists
of five urethane disks mounted
on a horizontal motorized shaft.
The lower portion of the disks are
immersed in the water column.
As the disks rotate, water is
circulated and facilitates
destratification, which is key
to maintaining a healthy, vibrant
aquatic environment.
