RIGGING SAFETY
GUIDELINES
Safe rigging usage requires professionals to follow proper safety
guidelines. Here are some of the most important ones for being safe
while using rigging for heavy lifting.
Always determine the proper type, size, length, diameter
and thickness of the sling required for the job before use.
Never tie knots in slings to shorten them.
Always ensure that rigging equipment is not loaded
beyond its safe working limits.
Hooks must always have safety latches, except under
certain working conditions.
Always know the limitations of the lifting device.
Find the load’s center of gravity before lifting.
Keep slings away from, or protected from, sharp surfaces.
If necessary, protect the load from the rigging.
Allow for increased tension and decreased sling capacities
caused by extreme sling angles, if necessary.
When using multiple leg slings, always equalize the load.
Maintain load control at all times, attaching tag lines
before lifting, if required.
Always keep personnel clear of the lifting area.
At the start of a lift, lift the load a few inches and then
check the rigging before proceeding.
Always start and stop lifts slowly.
Watch for any obstructions, including power lines. Keep at
least 10 feet away from power lines at all times.
Use proper signals when communicating with
the operator.
