sing foambase on roads and paths saves money and is better for the environment
Roads in Lincolnshire are greener than you think, according to engineering firm Ringway.
The company has been using a special eco-friendly tarmac on roads and footpaths around the
county, reducing CO2 emissions and saving money in one fell swoop.
Instead of dumping concrete and asphalt in landfill sites, it is put in one of 11 depots around
Lincolnshire and is then crushed and re-used as stone or transformed into the special eco-friendly
tarmac.
Contracts manager at Ringway Steve Scawthon said: "It reduces landfill taxes that need to be paid
and reduces the cost for the client, which is Lincolnshire County Council in this case.
"But the main thing is that it is really environmentally friendly and cuts our CO2 emissions by 55 to 65
per cent."
The final product, which is called 'foambase' is mixed and laid cold and is far better for the
environment than traditional hot asphalt.
It also costs around 45 per cent less than traditional asphalt techniques.
"It can't be applied to all the sites because sometimes it isn't suitable," said Mr Scawthon.
"Lincolnshire was one of the first places in the UK to use the technique and what we make in the
county stays in it.
"That cuts down on vehicle movement and congestion.
"It is based on the client's demand so the amount we produce does fluctuate year on year."
The recycled materials have to go through strict quality control every step of the way between depots
and road surface, including being checked for moisture levels and flexibility .
