To whom it may concern
I am taking this opportunity to provide a reference for Stephen Smyth who has worked for
the University of Hull since July 2009 in the role of Project Manager in a role which spans
commerce, academia and the NHS. I have been Stephen's line Manager since December
2013 during which time he has given exemplary service.
Stephen has been pivotal in developing the strategy, recruitment and delivery of all aspects
of the project. His team development skills, pragmatic leadership and management style
have guaranteed that all staff including clinicians, biochemists, basic scientists,
psychologists, nurses, dieticians and administrative support staff, have delivered without
fault. He has ensured that all aspects of the project have been managed impeccably. This
has necessitated consultation and collaboration both within and external to the University on
a continual basis. Even when faced with challenging situations, he is an effective leader
with unswerving loyalty, dedication and a continual drive to deliver. This is a testament to
both the man and the experience which accompanies him.
Stephen has been fastidious in his management of both budgetary and project control
aspects ensuring delivery of both, under budget and to time. Budgetary responsibility has
exceeded five million pounds during the course of his tenure and has included P&L
accountability. He is commercially focussed in all work undertaken and has ensured that
industry partner relationships have been developed and expanded.
Stephen has ensured that a legacy remains with the team to adhere to the principle of
continual improvement of both themselves and the organisation. The Masters of Business
Administration qualification together with the Chartered Management Institute Level 7
qualification in Strategic Management and Leadership highlight that Stephen is now ready to
take the next step in his career and progress to a senior managerial or directorship role.
He will be an asset in any organisation and I look forward to working with him at a later date
to hearing about his successes. It is without reservation that I therefore recommend
Stephen to you.
Kind regards
Yours sincerely
