Mythologies – Fall 2011
Personal Worldview Map Assignment– due Wednesday, September 7th
1) Start with picking out the meaningful categories that make up your worldview. You
must use a minimum of 5 or as many as you think are most relevant to you.
• Religion
• Culture/ethnicity
• Gender (male/female)
• Political orientation (left-wing, right-wing, liberal, conservative, etc. OR critique
of some aspect of society from environmental, feminist, anti-capitalist
perspective, etc.)
• Age
• Geographic location (neighborhood, city, province, country, urban vs. suburban,
rural/countryside)
• Place of origin (country, province, etc.) – if different from where you live now
• Sexual orientation
• Social/economic class ($)
• Family make-up (parents together/divorced, siblings, extended family, adoption,
significant loss)
• Friends (social life)
• Life experiences (key events that shaped you)
• Work/employment
• Social responsibility (volunteer work, activism, community involvement, etc.)
2) After picking the categories you want to use, you can decide on how you want to name
them (e.g. Age could be “Adolescent”; Social/economic class could be “Low-income”).
Then you can use connecting circles or boxes or whatever makes the most sense to map
this out visually. Try to show how categories tend to overlap/connect (e.g. “Traditional
two-parent Family” might overlap with “Religion” or “Culture”).
3) Elaborate at least 1 significant value, belief or practice that emerges from each of the 5
categories you chose, by drawing lines and adding explanatory text. Example: For the
category Gender you might write “Female” - Value: equality between the sexes. Belief:
men and women are equal. Practice: challenging sexism in everyday life. Of course, not
everyone who happens to be female necessarily shares these beliefs, but it’s likely that a
woman’s worldview will be shaped by her experience of being in a male-dominated
society if she becomes conscious of how this impacts her.
Evaluation (5%):
Use a minimum of 5 meaningful categories that are most relevant to you: 1 mark
Visual organization (well-organized, with logical connections): 1 mark
Name one value, belief or practice for each category: 3 marks
