  6. 6. INTRODUCTIONThe Utah Department of Workforce Services compiles generally defined as a specific physical worksite for anquarterly employment and wage data for non-agricultural employer. For most employers, this is the actual streetemployers in Utah. Data is maintained at the location at which business is conducted. For others, withestablishment level (e.g., store, plant, or other type of no permanent worksite (such as salespeople, factorypermanent worksite facility). Since these establishments representatives, or distributors) it is the location fromare assigned an industry and county code, their which they conduct their business (sometimes evenemployment and wage data can be aggregated into residences).common industry and county groupings for analysispurposes. For construction and some mining firms, it is the Utah headquarters or office location rather than the actualEmployment and wage data for Utah’s non-agricultural jobsite. These ten classes or categories, concentration also in the largest size class. The fourwhich are based on March employment levels, are as middle size classes, employing 10-249 workers, containfollows: 0, 1-4, 5-9, 10-19, 20-49, 50-99, 100-249, 250- 56 percent of non-agricultural employment, while almost499, 500-999, and 1,000 and over. 25 percent of establishments are represented there.Since Utah employers are primarily small-sized In general, average monthly wage levels tend toestablishments, the number of establishments in each correspond with increases in size class. The first two sizesize category correlates inversely with the size class, i.e., classes break this pattern, however. This is primarily duethe smaller size classes have the largest number of to high concentrations of professional organizations inestablishments. In fact, over half of Utah’s these small size classes, which tend to pay higher-than-establishments employ fewer than five workers and over average salaries. These factors raise the average wage99 percent employ fewer than 250 workers. level for small firms. The distribution of employment within these ten sizeclasses is different from the distribution of theestablishments. While over one-half of theestablishments are in the two smallest size classes(employing 0-4 workers,) less than 6 percent of non-agricultural employment is there. 5
