3. Stroke is a leading cause of
death, disability and admission
to nursing homes.

4. On average, a stroke occurs every
40 seconds and every 4 minutes
someone dies of stroke.

5. Not all strokes can be prevented
but the risk of death and severity
of disability can be decreased
through rapid treatment.

6. A National agenda is underway to improve
the general public’s ability to identify stroke
symptoms with the goal of improving
treatment rates, and therefore, decreasing
death and disability from stroke.

Learn FAST as an easy way to recognize stroke symptoms
Act FAST when you see stroke symptoms
Teach FAST to everyone you know and help save lives

8. Stroke symptoms:
• SUDDEN numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg ‐ especially on one
side of the body.
• SUDDEN confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.
• SUDDEN trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
• SUDDEN trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
• SUDDEN severe headache with no known cause.
A person experiencing a stroke might only have one of
these symptoms.

Time is Brain!
For every minute that a stroke goes
untreated the brain is dying and the person
experiencing the stroke is at risk for a
severe disability, like not being able to
move or speak, even death.

16. IF YOU BELIEVE SOMEONE IS HAVING A STROKE

Time is Brain!
• Call 911 immediately, the ambulance ride is where
treatment begins.
• Do not drive yourself or have someone drive you.
• Do not lie down to rest.

17. Teach FAST
• Take time to teach everyone you know this quick and
easy test for knowing how to recognize and respond
to a stroke. You could save a life!
