PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY:
WhenI sitdownto penmy professionalsummary,a riot of memories of and emotions come rushing in
and start swirling inside my mind. Strange is the cocktail of those inflections. Some bring tears to my
eyes, othersleave me breakingoutinlaughter, andforthe rest, well, I wish they never happened; or at
least never came back to haunt the inner recesses of my cranium.
Well, let’s face it. If you were to pen down your own job summary, on a professional networking site,
youwouldnot wash yourdirtylinen there. You would obviously showcase your best “whites”; cleaned
and ironed; crisp and perfumed to catch the attention of your next prospective employer. Curiously, I
findthe LinkedInpageseerilysimilartoeBay.The only difference being the fact that, on the latter, you
can auctionyour ownitems, while onthe formeryouyourself are the item:trying to sell yourself to the
highest bidder (read salary).
Now in the next few paragraphs, I shall take you on a winding ride, called my professional flashback. I
promise youthe journeywill be exciting;full of twistsandturns, encompassingmyriadhues, enveloping
a host of emotions that sometimes lifted me in the stars; while at other times left me cold and bitter,
with my heart in the boots.
2004: My job history stretches back for almost a decade, and started after I had spent four years of
my life, slayingavenerabledemoncalledEngineering. As a mark of my victorious exploit, University of
Kalyani, West Bengal, awarded me with a citation called “Bachelor of Technology in Information
Technology.” The moment was magical. I felt as if I was being Knighted by Her majesty The Queen, or
had earned a title on the same lines as Perseus, the Kraken slayer.
Alas, howfoolishIwas!!Little didIknowthat the real battle hadjust begun!.Iwas just a small fry in the
vast ocean of the professional world. And to make matters worse, I and millions like me had been
tagged by a fearsome stamp. The stamp carried in no uncertain terms the word “FRESHER”. The inner
meaning was loud and clear as a bell. I have never heard or learnt of a word that generated so much
loathing for some, and so much fear for those on the wrong side of the aforesaid word. God!! It feels
horrible to be at the bottom of the food (read job) chain.
2006: After bumping around a few jobs, that demanded my absolute loyalty, while I sweated out at
ungodly hours for a gingerly pay; I finally joined Zee Aakash News Pvt Limited in May 2006. The
assignment was in the Master Control Room of the channel as a Broadcast Executive. It has been two
yearssince I had graduated, andin these two years, it seemed I had forgotten to enjoy myself. May be
dark thoughtsof jobless-nesswere eatingintomyinnerself.Andthensuddenly with this job there was
light.Well, itwas not great, as you can imagine, that I was still a greenhorn, yet the job earned me the
first green bills of my life from my first permanent job.
But my respite wasshortlived.Wanttoknow, how a fresher is treated irrespective of country, state or
organization? It’s simple. Try putting 2 large cichlids like Gourami, in a fishbowl along with a baby
goldfish; and sit back and watch the show. The rest is left to your imagination.

2008: One and a half yearsflewbyevenbefore Iknew it, and Jan 2008 marked another milestone in
my life. It was time for my first job change and also the time I first ventured out of my home. I packed
my bags and headed to New Delhi, to join Lok Sabha Television in the same capacity of Broadcast
Executive as before. Though the job was on a fixed term contract basis, yet along with the better pay
came the glamorousperkof workinginside the LokSabhaand seeing our politicians in flesh and blood.
It was a greatexperienceforanyIndianworthhissalt,to see the wheelsof ourgreatdemocracy moving
from very close quarters. I shall cherish those memories for life.
Now let’scome down, fromthe stars andhave a realitycheck.Ipromisedyoubefore that the journeyof
my career path is both winding and exciting. Hope you are starting to get a feel of that.
For a boy fromthe humidlanesof Kolkata, imagine the freeze Ifeltin the Delhi chillon the very month I
joined, andjustwhenI had startedto getthe hang of things, the sweltering heat of the April sun made
me miserable. But if you thought I would be lulled into inertia by the glamour of the Lok Sabha.
…Naah!!! You were wrong mate.
2008: Fast forward to June 2008…A sense of homesickness probably got the better of me. And as
soonas I got a call from WestBengal PowerDevelopment (WBPDCL), the power utility of West Bengal
Gov.,it wastime for Bengal Beckons. In June 2008, I joined as a Graduate Engineer Trainee, (I.T Dep’t),
in the Sagardighi Thermal Power Plant, in Murshidabad District. This was my 3rd
job, in as many
calendar years. I quickly got down into the business of settling down in my new job. Handling govt
tenders, handlingITrelatedInfrastructure, administrative assignments et all became a part of my daily
routine.
Yaah!!! You must be thinking that’s it…The guy has cracked the doors of a government job, that too in
the officer cadre. What more can anyone want. Tarry a little my friend. This journey isn’t over “till the
fat lady sings”.
As youcan imagine,inanygovtorganization,workmovesonata drearypace.Andthis organizationwas
no different. AtthispointImustconfess, thatI am a city rat throughand through. For someone brought
up underthe glare of neonlights andfedwitha constant streamof trafficcacophony, the village whereI
was posted wasa differentworldaltogether. Lifeinthe power plant was so slow and unassuming, that,
it seemed to take years for a month to turn into the next, and a decade, for the year to draw the
curtains. But as the children’srhyme goes,Ikeptrowingmyboat, merrilyandgentlydownthe streamof
time.

2010: It has been 10 years,since 9/11 shookthe world.Immediatelyafterthe financial year of 2009-
10 drew to curtains,so did my tenure at WBPDCL. On 15th
April 2010, I joined Phillips Carbon Black
Limited in SAP support team as SAP consultant. The SAP module that was assigned to me was
Production Planning (PP). Finally, finally and finally”, after nearly 3 years of wandering in the
wilderness, I was back in my hometown, Kolkata.
Before I continue further, let’s pause for a moment and take stock of the journey so far. It has been
quite anexhaustive one.Jumpingfromone industrytoanother, shiftingfromone city to another, yet in
spite of the hazards I faced, eachassignmentmade me matured, opened my mind to the greater world
and intotalitychangedme fromthe inside out.Ithas been quite some time, since I had graduated yet I
can still smell the inkof the freshlyprinted fresherresumewithwhichIknocked on the doors of various
companies. Frombeingajuvenile withoutexperience andconfidence, the introvertfresher, had molted
into a confident young man ready to take on the world in a span of a few years. Hello World!! Here I
come.
Now let’s get back to my life in PCBL. Anyone with an inkling of SAP experience before, would have
pickedupeverythingquicklyandinahassle free manner.Butforme itwas a differentstory. All the prior
experience Ihadwasadministrative innature.SoSAPwasa differentdishforme altogether. I struggled
and struggledandjustwhenIthoughtI couldtake no more, there was more struggle.Slowlybutsteadily
I came to an understandingwiththe termslike BOM,MasterRecipe andRoutingandhow “spro”was the
gateway to heaven. And by the turn of a year or so I could handle things independently.
But curiously, apartfromthe grindin the office there wassomething that caught my attention too. And
surprisingly, it was something that lay outside the office. It was the platter that was served, on the
streetsof Dalhousie during tiffin time. Trust me, when I say you could complete a gastronomic tour of
India, if you could sample all the food from the food vendors of Dalhousie. Indian,Chinese, Mughlai,
Bengali,Punjabi,SouthIndianall regionsof Indiaare representedonthese streets through their unique
tongue ticklers.Even the rare and exotic Northeastern and Cashmere fares too, had their places under
the sun.
God!! If Park Streetcan wearthe crown of beingthe established“FoodStreetof Kolkata”, Dalhousie can
definitely don the title of “Tiffin Street of Kolkata”. I promise if I ever shoot a documentary, it will
definitely be titled “Street Food of Kolkata”.

2015: Compared to many small and medium sized companies, Phillips Carbon is a very stable
Organization. It is in fact well managed corporate entity. And I worked there for 5 continuous years. I
even managed promotion at the end of 4 years.
But thenI starteddreamingbig.Istarteddreamingof studyingandworkinginU.S.A.With this in mind, I
clearedthe requisiteexaminations, namelyGREand TOEFL and headedtowardsU.S.A. I hadleftPCBL in
May 2015, with a heavy heart, but I guess to reach your dreams, sometimes you have to take hard
decisions.
I started working as Teaching Assistant at Texas Tech University from September, 2015.
Workingand livinginU.S.A wasa refreshing experience. You get to meet with people from around the
world;yousoak innewideasandoutlooks;andoverall getagreat opportunitytobroadenyour horizon.
AnddidI forget that the pay was good too. Not a figurative part of speech, but “green bills” in the real
sense of the term filled my pockets.
But I guess destiny had some other plans in store for me. And my stint in U.S.A proved ephemeral.
With the birth of my daughter, not only did I had to discontinue my job in USA and return to India, her
birthalsosignaledextraresponsibilities,skyrocketingexpenditures,butabove all loadsandloadsof joy.
2016: After a brief struggle with job search, I finally joined one of India’s leading Hosiery makers :
J.G Hosiery, inKolkata.Ijoinedina veryglamorousandadministrativerole,namely, Executive Assistant
to Director. I started working from 1st
Oct 2016.
Whew!!Whata ride ithas been for my career. Repeated change of jobs, accompanied with changes in
jobverticals.Eachprofile more challengingthanthe one before.Iwouldn’tsaythatthe ride was fraught
withdanger,butdefinitelybumpyandserpentine withitsownebbsandflows:upsanddowns. Butif you
ask me, it was worth every moment of it.
As I wait to commence the next leg of my professional journey, I stand out with open arms and say
“Hello Tomorrow”.
