How did you attract/address your audience?
1. Our primary audience are teenagers age ranging from 15-25+. Our film does
have violent scenes due to the two deaths towards the end of our opening,
however we wanted to focus more on the plotline rather than the actual
deaths. Because of this we focused more on the costume rather than the
makeup as we didn’t want to make our film sub genre too horror related when
we wanted to create suspense through mystery.
We did some research into our target audience and found out what they liked
about thriller movies. We found that horror was a favourite but because we
wanted a noir element we would incorporate suspense into our opening to
create the tension needed in a thriller. After we created our film we got positive
feedback saying the tension worked well with the film noir and it met all the
requirements of a thriller genre.

2. Audience Pleasures
Visceral Pleasures: This is when a film has a physical effect on you, an
example is when you physically ‘jump’ or ‘cry out’ due to what’s happening on
the screen. This effect can be achieved by using sound to emphasize the
jumpscare or if theirs an action sequence, with lots of fast editing causing
people to feel disorientated like the character within the film.
From feedback from our target audience, our double twist at the end of our
opening had a big impact. The scene begins when you discover that Ordessa
Quella has been after her sister all along and kills her as well as Tommy
Devlin. By getting a reaction from the audience shows how visceral pleasure
can leave a lasting effect on someone after viewing making it more
memorable.
Another example of this within our film is people liking the mystery element
and trying to work out the ending as it if were a puzzle. This technique does
create pleasure when watching the film as the ambiguity only strengthens
peoples need to understand the plot. The viewer also begins to work out who
is the ‘bad’ or ‘good’ guy in the situation, or in this case which character is in
fact the antagonist or protagonist. From research people enjoy the process of
‘working out’ and ‘discovering’ the end result, ultimately leaving people
physically and emotionally effected by the film.
3. Conclusion
Overall, we achieved what we wanted in terms of attracting and addressing
our audience. We had a good response to our plot and how the thriller noir
genre worked well with the character development within our opening.
