ARTcetera Benefit & Auction: One of the community’s leading
art events – allying artists, collectors, galleries, and altruists in support
of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
3. Dear Friends,
As the Executive Director of AIDS Action Committee, I am
incredibly grateful to you for your interest in supporting our work
and our mission. While ARTcetera 2018 is poised to once again
be one of the community’s leading art events, gathering artists,
collectors, galleries, and so many others under one roof, it is
also all in support of one important mission: ending the
HIV/AIDS epidemic.
I want to let you what your support enables AIDS Action
Committee to accomplish. We provide essential services for
people living with HIV/AIDS while also working to prevent new
infections and advocating for progressive public health policies
at the local and national levels. We couldn’t do that without
your help!
AIDS Action Committee provides services to people in the
Greater Boston area who are living with an HIV diagnosis and to
a significant number of people at risk of contracting the virus.
Our average client has an annual income of less than $10,000 a
year, and our programs and services make it possible for many of
them to remain healthy while dealing with life’s other challenges.
Overall, we saw over 4,700 clients this past year. Among the
services we provided were legal assistance for almost 450
clients, case management and housing assistance for over 1,600
households; and more than 5,200 client wellness check-in calls.
Our Youth on Fire program moved into a beautiful new space, and
served almost 200 homeless young people ages 14 to 24 with a
total of more than 4,100 visits to the program.
Working with our partners and through direct one-on-one
legislative advocacy, we continued to advocate on behalf of
people living with HIV and the enactment of progressive public
health policy. These efforts led to the city of Boston joining the
Paris Declaration on Fast-Track Cities, thus committing the city
to taking the public health measures needed to end HIV, and
benchmark our progress against internationally-set goals
and timelines.
We distributed 240,804 sterile syringes in our ongoing efforts
to prevent the transmission of HIV and hepatitis C through the
shared use of needles and drug injection equipment. We also
trained approximately 296 people in opioid overdose prevention
and the use of Naloxone, a medication used to counter overdoses.
These trainees went on to reverse 251 opioid overdoses.
As part of our work with the Getting to Zero Coalition, a
multi-sector coalition working collaboratively to get to zero HIV
stigma, zero HIV-related deaths, and zero new HIV infections in
Massachusetts, our PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) campaign
continues to increase awareness of PrEP’s effectiveness among
physicians and those who are vulnerable to HIV infections. Our
community events, like the AIDS Walk and ARTcetera, continue to
raise much-needed funds for education and prevention services,
in addition to public awareness about the on-going needs of
those living with HIV and those most vulnerable to infection.
As you can see, our work is not over in the fight against HIV.
I couldn’t be more appreciative for the support of AIDS Action
Committee’s partners, without whom this work would be made
impossible. Working together we can achieve our goal of one day
ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
In solidarity,
Carl SciortinoExecutive Director, AIDS Action Committee
4. About ARTcetera
ARTcetera, a biennial auction auction to benefit AIDS Action Committee,
remains one of Boston’s best venues for art acquisition. Seasoned art
collectors, leading philanthropists, bright new art world stars, and community
members discover fine art, connect to one another, and support the work of
AIDS Action.
About the AIDS Action Committee
AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts is proud to be a leader in the fight
against HIV/AIDS. Since 1983, AIDS Action has been providing health and
wellness services to HIV positive clients, conducting cutting edge prevention
programs, and advocating for fair and effective AIDS policies.
ARTcetera History
In 1985, a group of Boston-area artists responded to the AIDS epidemic
that was affecting their friends and colleagues by donating their work to
raise funds for research. These artists raised over $100,000 dollars that
year and created a new space for the community. ARTcetera has since grown
into one of Boston’s most revered spaces for art purchasing, auctioning off
work by artists including Rothko, Andy Warhol, and Annie Liebowitz. While
the landscape of HIV/AIDS looks very different than it did in when ARTcetera
began, we have a long way to go in order to ensure healthy outcomes for
those living with HIV and to end the epidemic for good.
