1. Cyclone Phailin and Interventions in Odisha by HelpAge India
The devastating Cyclone Phailin struck the eastern coast of India on Saturday 12 October,
leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Odisha was the worst hit with large scale devastation.
· 99 Blocks, 14,514 villages and 80, 53, 626
people have been affected.
· 2, 34,000 kachha houses in Ganjam
district have been damaged.
· 5 lakh hectares of crop destroyed.
· Destruction of Livelihood.
· Power infrastructure totally damaged.
· Pollution of drinking water.
·Flash floods after the cyclone damaged
standing paddy crops & non – paddy crops.
HelpAge in Action
Mobile Medical Units:
HelpAge India is responding to the disaster with initial relief measures by deploying 3 Mobile
Medical Units in Puri, Kendrapada and Ganjam districts .In the coming days ,Balasore district
and the cut off areas /villages inside Chilka Lake will be covered by redeploying the Kendrapara
MMU.
2. Needs Assessment:
HelpAge teams are carrying out needs assessments, liaising with the state and district
authorities to determine the most urgent needs of people hit by the cyclone. Surveys are on
Khordha, Kendrapada , Cuttack and the worst affected Ganjam district.
Way Forward:
Deploy at least 4 MMUs in the districts of Puri, Kendrapara, Ganjam and Balasore.. We
currently possess 3 MMU vans, but need the running costs. One new MMU needs to be
fully funded.
Initial needs identified are for Solar Lamps, Dry Food Rations and Medicines for the
2000 families HI will work with.
Post Needs Assessment exercise, income generation projects will be identified.
