Editor's Notes
It is so very important to understand the goals of the website and design a website that will make it possible to achieve these goals. Not the looks but the functionality of a website will make this possible. Functionality includes a easy to understand and use navigation. A call to action need to be designed that it will really make the visitor act and convert. The only websites that can afford to be so different that it gets hard to figure out where to click might be a portfolio site of a web designer. Just to showcase the skill level. Color and graphics should not be overwhelming to the visitor and be “easy on the eye”.
The first example is great to showcase bad design for a call to action. We do not even know what the site is about, everything is cluttered. No clear navigation system in place. The second screenshot shows what wrong color choice can do to the visitor. Both look very unprofessional and I doubt that after landing at the homepage many will click on any links to go deeper into these websites.
This is a great example for a design with conversion in mind. There is not to much going on here and the “call-to-action” button is easy to find.
This Chart shows the different steps in planning, analyzing and adjusting a website.
Here you can see how small a change can be that will bring so much more conversion. This is where testing and analytics bring clarity. Some facts are common knowledge and can be found in case studies and it is a good thing for designer to educate herself before designing the website.
